good place to buy kids bedroom furniture

Post by atlanta_dad » Thu Jun 07, 2018 3:25 pm

Looking for furniture for kids bedroom and guest bedroom. We have beds for the rooms already but looking for night stands, chests, computer desk etc. So far we have been buying most of our furniture from Costco and found them to be of great quality and expensive. This time we would like to try somewhere else to save $. What stores do you suggest for mostly assembled furniture with reasonably good quality & price.

Thanks!!

Room & Board has good quality furniture, but the prices are not stellar (but not horrible, either). For cheap $$ for kids, we use Ikea. The desks are durable, and the kids can be rough with it, since we don't intend to keep it forever.

Well, I was going to say Costco.

I’m sure you can get some lower quality stuff for a little cheaper, but for what you’re getting, I don’t think you can say Costco is “expensive.”

Good luck,

+1 Ikea is a good choice for kids stuff. In spite of what people say a lot of the stuff lasts longer than you might expect (or want).

Craigslist is worth a look, especially this time of year when lots of people are moving.

People sometimes post unbelievable deals when they just need to get rid of something.

Craigslist, facebook marketplace, garage sales.

Buying in a store as new is such a rip off.

+2 I recommend IKEA for anything upholstered that you want cheap.

+1 Facebook marketplace. This is where I would go for anything non-upholstered (that you want cheap). I don't buy used upholstered furniture because ew.

+1 for buying used/secondhand on craigslist or other places

you can find some great items for a good deal, particularly if you have some time to wait for the right item to come around -- not only that but you are giving an item new life.

i have not infrequently gotten furniture from craigslist only to sell it a decade later for about 90% of the price I bought it for.

What is amazing is you can buy baby/kid stuff on craigslist/facebook marketplace and resell it after they are done for almost the same price (assuming it is in the same condition).

I like classic old solid wood pieces because it's a lot lighter than "particle board" stuff, holds up for a lifetime and can be refinished/repaired. We frequented antique stores (not fancy ones) and found everything we needed. You have to learn a bit about how good furniture is made and how to spot poor construction or materials but we enjoyed the adventure.

My son brags that everything in his 3 year old's room is from Ikea. Quick to complete the shopping task, reasonably priced, functional and looks good. I find the picture assembly instructions very frustrating!
If I am stupid I will pay.

Do the kids' room even need furniture? We never got anything more than a bed for my son's room. He put clean clothes on the floor in one corner and dirty clothes everywhere else.

We have bought ours at Pottery Barn Kids on sale with American Express points. But that might not be the type of furniture you are looking for.

One of my kids does this too. We keep his door closed.
