Patio furniture cover in the northeast
Patio furniture cover in the northeast
Hi all,
It seems our patio furniture covers cannot handle northeast winters as it gets brittle and rips. Does anyone have a recommendation of a cover of another solution that would work? Same thing used to happen to my grill covers until I abandoned using them. Thanks in advance!!

Here in NJ I've had decent results with HD heavy duty tarps and bungie cords on my patio picnic table.

What kind of furniture do you have that needs covering? Sunlight probably damages it more than any winter weather. I haven't covered my enameled "wrought iron" furniture in 8 years now with no issues.

Best solution would be to store the furniture indoors.
I do sometimes see some furniture piled together and covered with a blue tarp tied with rope on patios and balconies but it's not very attractive. Maybe get a green tarp.

Short answer: buy a car cover. Soft underneath and more pliable.
My wife and I bought a large cast aluminum table for our deck. The salesman suggested a cover for $250...to make sure this table last the 20 plus years we plan to stay at our house we figure they know what they are talking about. Dumb. Well after the first winter we take off the cover and it is completely dulled. Company says yeah the PVC in their cover caused the problem and replaced our table and chairs wth seriously no questions asked but tried to sell us a newer and better $300 cover. Instead purchased a high end car cover...and by high end I mean not the $30 ones or the $70 ones...the $100 ones...and I'm sure there are higher priced ones but for 3 years now it has protected it from snow, rain, wind, cold. When we take it off in the spring, the table looks as great as it did previously.

We have a cast aluminum table on our deck too. It has been there 11 years without any cover. It still looks like new. One of the reasons for getting an aluminum table is that it will not rust. Weather does not seem to be a problem, and we have harsh winters.FIREmeup wrote: ↑Tue May 15, 2018 3:57 pm Short answer: buy a car cover. Soft underneath and more pliable.

Re: Patio furniture cover in the northeast
I live in the northeast and have never covered my patio furniture. After 15 years on my deck it looks brand new, apart from slight fading in the slingback material (which a cover wouldn't have prevented anyway, unless you use it in the summer).
Same thing with my Weber grill. 10 years outside. Covered for first couple of years, then researched it a bit and decided it was unnecessary after replacing two covers. Grill still looks great.
You should dig a little into whether a cover is actually necessary. (And I know there are people who conclude that a cover is necessary, and that's fine too. Just saying you should look into it a bit, if you haven't already.)

I have had good luck with classic accessories ravenna - search amazon for it, but it does not get wicked cold where I am at, although we do get some snow stahms every once in a while.
