We are planning on staying in Las Vegas for a couple of nights before going to grand Canyon, Bryce and Zion.
I know Vegas hotels usually have promotions and such. Anyone has suggestions on how to get discounts? If not, what hotel do you recommend? I am a regular here, so nothing extravagant, please. Thanks.

There are hundreds of hotels in Vegas and it is almost always possible to find a good deal unless your timing is bad with a major convention or holiday weekend. Watch out for charges like parking and resort fees which can turn a good deal into something expensive. Do you want to be on strip or off strip? The best deals are off strip (can get free parking and no resort fee), but if you want to visit the hotels on the strip for dining or shows more than once I'd go ahead and stay there. Gambling is easy to find off strip.

Hotels NOT to use: Luxor, Camelot, Rio Suites and Circus Circus.

Dumps.

Yes, the large hotels and chains use a yield management pricing strategy like the airlines so you will see a lot of fluctuation in the rates. One approach is to find an acceptable hotel and rate that doesn't require prepayment or have a cancellation fee and then watch for a better deal.

I have stayed at Caesar’s Palace, The Venetian and MGM Grand and was happy with all 3. Other hotels I’d look at if I return would be Bellagio, Paris and Cosmopolitan. As suggested above, I’d avoid the super discount hotels. You go to Vegas for the Vegas experience and it’s worth a couple of hundred extra bucks for 2 nights to get that.

Since only for a couple nights stay center strip would be my advice. Bellagio, Cosmo, Ceasars if you can afford it or Bally's, Paris, Planet Hollywood if you want to save a few bucks. Sunday-Thursday prices are very cheap as long as no major convention in town (ala CES in January when week days are more expensive than weekend). Go big and enjoy it! Tons of websites with deals. I like lasvegasadvisor.com

The outdoor Pools are a big option I look for when I visit. Not the party pools but the relaxing ones with swim-up bars. Mandalay Bay(Older, and good Sportsbook), Cosmo(Young crowd) and Hard Rock(off the strip, Older) were good pools. You do get deal emails all the time. Just sign up maybe?

Bally’s is a good compromise. Big casino feel good location but cheaper than the luxury spots like Aria/Cosmo.

Oh ya, LV has legendary pools. If you have kids Mandalay Bay is sort of kid friendly. Otherwise we love MGM for their huge pool deck. Cosmo is fun/party crowd. Bellagio sort of boring. Bally's is horrible. Paris marginal. Hard Rock used to be huge back in the day. I imagine they still have a good time there but it's a few long blocks from the strip.

Sign up for all the hotel "players cards" that you have an interest in. Easy to locate on their website & will quickly give you a discounted room rate. Most hotels are part of a large conglomerate so getting aboard will be a simple process.

As already mentioned, be certain to get specifics when it comes to the resort fee & parking. Can easily add $50.00/night to your bill. Stay away from weekends & tip well.

Be Well,

If you are taking a camper or similar for the parks then you could camp in Vegas, too.

People from Los Angeles and elsewhere fill the place up on Friday and Saturday nights so those nights hotel rates are high. Rates for Sunday through Thursday nights are often much, much, lower during most of the year.

When we go (every year) it's for 2+ weeks, so we stay at a condo just off the strip, at Harmon (runs through City Center) and Koval (runs behind MGM, Flamingo, etc). If I were just staying two nights and wanted the Vegas experience, I'd probably look at Bellagio, Caesar's, Venitian/Pallazo or Mirage. If I wanted to save a few bucks I'd look at PH, TI, Flamingo, Tropicana, or The Cromwell. The newly-remodeled Monte Carlo might also be nice. Avoid: Excalibur, Quad, Bally's, SLS, and if you have kids anything at City Center (Cosmopolitan, Aria, etc) or Wynn properties (Wynn, Encore).

If you want to stay downtown (totally different vibe), I'd stick to one of the recently-remodeled ones like the Golden Nugget or The D. Four Queens is a ****hole but is home to my favorite restaurant in the entire region, Hugo's Cellar. Red Rock Resort is also quite nice if you don't mind being outside of town, has a nice spa, several restaurants and a really nice bowling alley. M Resort (Henderson) is nice too, but probably the least kid-friendly location I've ever been. They sent three security guards after my then 6-year-old for using the "free to all" soda fountain.

What are your interests while you're there? That would help us narrow it down. I certainly learn something new about Las Vegas every time I go, but I've probably spent 6 months there over the past 10 years, so I have a decent handle on the place.

DW and I have a preference for Bally’s on the Strip. (In fact we’re there right now.) Centrally located, not that monstrously sized, within walking distance of many of the local night spots and decent dining.

I recommend Paris or Venetian - even Wynn. These are in a central location of sorts.

We stayed at Cesar's palace last year. I would not recommend that at all. Their ventilation system is way too old. You will pass through the casino full of smoke (a lot more compared other casinos) to get to the room. And it shows the age. Reception service is really bad. For that price there are much better options.

Also the Planet Hollywood had a lot less smoke smell on the casino floor (relatively).

Also watch out for those mandatory resort fees. They can be up to $50 or higher a night in some of those places.

I like the Golden Nugget. It is on Fremont Street, which is some of the older part of Vegas. Fremont St is a closed off street, covered, that has a light show on the ceiling. There are also street performers, etc., up and down the street. It is a bit more chill then being on the strip. That said, the strip is just a 15 minute ride down the way if you want to get there.

One thing to keep in mind about Las Vegas hotels is if there is a casino on the property, smoking is allowed on the property. If you have any sensitivity to smoke (asthma, bronchospasms, etc.) then you'll want to stay at a property without a casino that is 100% non-smoking. This may mean passing on the cheap discounts on the Strip, but it's worth it for your health.

The Wynn, Wynn Encore or Bellagio. All are as good as any hotel in USA. If I had to choose, from personal experience, the Bellagio is hard to beat.

I was in Las Vegas 2 weeks ago. This is going to shock some people. We stayed at Planet Hollywood and it was amazing and inexpensive (we paid 119 for two weekend nights, and 49 for three weekday nights). Our room was incredibly clean, quiet, the bed was comfortable, and the staff at the hotel were exceptional. However, the hotel doesn't have a great pool. We enjoyed a few games of free ping pong near the pool.

At first, we thought we were going to be the only people over the age of 20 but that was not the case (we are in our mid 50s and did not feel out of place at all).

The location of the hotel was right in the middle of the strip (almost directly across the street from the Bellagio). Walking was easy; some days we walked to the right, some days we walked to the left. There are two starbucks in the hotel and a few reasonably priced restaurants in the adjacent mall.

Still, as others have mentioned the Bellagio is an absolutely beautiful hotel. There are fountains in front and an amazing restaurant with an indoor atrium. If I return, I will stay at Planet Hollywood again and have at least a few meals in the restaurant at the Bellagio. If you want to guarantee a great place, the Bellagio is probably the safest bet on the strip. Yet, Planet Hollywood was in an incredible location and surprised me.

Wherever you stay, bring eye drops. My eyes watered everytime I had to walk through a casino. Wow!

Strip or off-strip? That is the first question you need to ask.

Hard to beat places like the Wynn and Bellagio for the "Vegas experience" but if you want nothing extravagant I'd move off the strip.
Some good advice above.

I'm in Vegas 8-10+ times a year and now prefer being off- strip myself. JW Marriott in Summerlin is older, but nice. Red Rock is also nice. Depends on what you are looking for. If you are just looking for a room, there are plenty of Marriotts (or your favorite chain) off-strip...quality varies by location.

If you are driving to the Grand Canyon you might consider staying towards Henderson. Green Valley Ranch maybe?

As for staying further north on 15...I've stayed at the Golden Nugget (mentioned above), almost worth it just for the water slide that goes through the shark tank and the people watching on Fremont street. ;)

Note to OP:

People like to throw out numbers on this forum about the great rates that they have received at Las Vegas resorts.

A couple of weeks ago, I received a deal from TI for $59 per night and a deal from the Wynn for ONLY $129. Remember, you will not get those rates. That will add $30-60 additional a night in resort fees PLUS taxes PER NIGHT on that amount. Then, many of the LV Strip properties are now charging for parking to the tune of $10-20 per day. And those fees are non-negotiable unless you have the top status in your players card.

Your best deals in Las Vegas are "off-strip" properties like the Coast properties, the Rio, the Station properties and the like.

My only recommendation is to try to plan your trip so that you are in Las Vegas on Sunday-Thursday nights and to book months in advance. I already have reservations for late October and March 2019.

if your goal is just to spend a night or two before going to the National Parks, you might look at Laughlin or Mesquite where room prices are substantially less

You might consider a Las Vegas Advisor membership. Great monthly newsletter with the scoop on all the latest bargains. Plus you get their yearly coupon book, which has tons of deals, including their famous $50 comp coupon at the Palms (really a half-off coupon that can be applied to up to $100, and which you can apply to your room). Since the membership itself is only $37 for the online version, that's a pretty good deal.

Keep in mind that if you are going to need your car daily or especially several times daily during the stay, parking at the strip hotels can add 20-30+ minutes to each roundtrip out vs. a hotel where you can just park in the lot in front of the building. The strip hotels often involve long elevator rides from your room to the lobby, followed by long walks through the entire extent of the property, followed by another elevator ride, then a walk, then a drive through multiple garage floors and a pay station, then sitting at a few slow moving traffic lights, just to get to your car and off the strip. If I am going to be making a lot of car trips off the property I'll just stay somewhere off strip instead.

My wife and I go every year and love the pools. The best have been

a) Caeser's Palace. A loud hotel but the pools are so nice.
b) Wynn. I imagine it's cheap these days with all their legal issues. It's not Boglehead-friendly but the suites with the private pool and bar are great.
c) For kids, Mandalay Bay and its sister hotel (Delano) are great to consider, the pools are the most kid-friendly.
d) Palazzo, sister hotel to The Venitian, was also enjoyable, and their gym was the best I've ever seen in Vegas.

+1, nice place, breakfast made-to-order included in the price, no smoke that I recall:

Embassy Suites by Hilton Las Vegas - near UNLV

There is another Embassy Suites at the Convention Center, but they apparently charge "resort fees" :(

The Elara surprised us the most when we stayed there once. It's a Hilton Grand vacations property but it used to be part of planet Hollywood. It's strictly a hotel so no casino but it has an entrance right into the miracle Mile shops. The rooms are spacious and floor to ceiling windows. We used Hilton points and got a great value but I'm sure there are good deals for cash as well.

If your renting a car, don't rent it until you need to head to Zion. Uber and Lyft are everywhere in Vegas and worth every penny. There's guys on the street handing out free Uber/Lyft credits too (watch out for the other guys handing out different cards though ;) )

If you're talking about sometime soon, we just got a letter from The Wynn offering week day nights for $129. I think weekends were $10 -$20 more. We got it as were were previous guests, but it can't hurt to call and check. I think their Wynn Encore property might even be a little less. It is a great hotel, and in a great location. Next door to the Venetian, across from the Fashion Mall, Mirage, Bellagio, etc. and easy walking to a number of other venues.

It really depends on what you are looking for, there are just so many options. The time you travel is very important. Once I got a room, last minute, at Paris (nice, on the strip, but not super luxury) for less than $40. It was a week night during the slow time of the year.

The nice thing is that you will have a car, so you can be mobile.

If you are looking to be on the strip, and not luxury: Paris, Balley's, Harrahs, or Treasure Island. I used to stay at the Imperial Place when I went to play poker (center strip and cheap), but it has been redone and is now the Linq. I have not been back since, but I have heard good things.

For nice just off the strip: The Palms or station casinos.

If you are looking for "older style" vegas, you could stay downtown. You can stay at the Golden Nugget for < 100 per night, or others for like $25/night. I have not stayed in any of those.

For a Motel 8 like experience, you can always stay at Ellis Island, just off the strip and offers an excellent meal for like $8. I've eaten but not stayed there.

I would stay away from the Hard Rock, probably too much partying for you.

For luxury: Aria, Wynn, or Bellagio.

There are just so many options. Enjoy your trip!

I find that pretty much any resort on the strip has decent enough rooms. My wife is very particular where she feels comfortable sitting at to eat, let alone laying her head to sleep and even she is okay with rooms at Luxor or Excalibur. I personally have to be enticed with a killer deal to pay more for a nicer a room/resort as Im rarely in the room to enjoy the amenities.

Downtown- Golden Nugget

Off-Strip- SouthPoint

I wouldn't stay on the strip if you want to gamble but if you must, look at Bally's or Paris. Both are mid-priced properties in a prime location. WARNING- the strip is a cool place to see a show, have a nice meal, hang in the sportsbook, and general sightseeing. I would not recommend gambling there. It's a ripoff. But some people enjoy throwing their money away, I guess.

It totally depends upon how you want to spend your time in LV.

What do you want to do while you are there? Gamble? Shows? Fine dining? Hike Red Rock or Valley of Fire? Walk around the Strip? People-watch in the casinos? Just sleep while you drive to GC or Boulder Dam during the day? Something else?
