Atlantis Bahamas for myself with 2 kids?

Post by JakeF » Sun Apr 08, 2018 9:56 pm

Hi All,
I’m trying to plan a summer vacation for myself and my twin boys that will be 13 in August. I’m not sure if I’ll go in July or August. One of them desperately wants to go to Atlantis and I’ve looked at the cost, it’s about 4400.00 for the 3 of us which includes plane tickets from Boston. There’s a layover of about an hour, which isn’t awful.

I’ve heard that it’s crazy expensive for food though, and I know I can pack snacks, get water and little things for the room at a local store, but I’ve got no idea what stores to go to, what’s safe to go to, and then aside from that, I’m wondering what dinner will cost me? Does anyone have an idea? I won’t be drinking and my boys aren’t overly picky, but I’ve heard any food is about 40 per person.

I’m looking at booking through Costco because if I do then it’s about 200.00 cheaper and also they have a deal where there’s lunch for 2 people free per day, and another credit or something. Anyone ever use them and have advice?

I will say the place looks awesome, my concern is I’m trying to stick to a budget, and I don’t want to end up spending 6500.00 on the trip. I also have read some awful reviews all over different websites in the last couple of months, and that’s a concern.

I just posted in this under your other post: I saw the heading and without reading anything, I immediate thought, "The Atlantis". I have not been to the Atlantis in quite a while, but there was a nearby grocery store and restaurants where you can go to save some money - pizza, hamburgers, etc. When my kids were younger we stayed at the harborside which had a kitchen and pull out couch. One way we saved money was to eat breakfast in the room every morning, peanut butter sandwiches for snacks, pizza one night, hamburgers another. I believe there is pizza delivery available, but we never used it. I did pack a suitcase full of snacks, cereal, english muffins, etc. I bought milk, eggs and butter at the harborside store. You just have to plan it out if you would like to cut back on expenses. You can find money saving tips on the travel web that has a lot of reviews. My kids were 12 and 14 at that time & they said it was better than Disney. In our area, school does not begin until the 2nd week of September, so we went at the end of August, room prices where lower at that time of the summer, and a lot of students are already back in school so not as crowded. At that time, there was also a "sister" hotel where you can stay for cheaper prices off campus and still have full access.

Also Jake, you may want to book directly. I'm seeing rooms starting at $161 in August at the Atlantis. I also never fly anywhere without using airline points so hopefully you have some of those.

My wife and I visited Atlantis often a few years back. It is quite expensive to eat in their restaurants or just about buy anything from the resort. They were making a huge effort to get better when Bahamar was about to open. Now that Bahamar is open, not sure how Atlantis is responding.

Your kids (and you) will love the water park and the Dolphin Cove is really something you should do as a family. Expensive but well worth it.

There is a Comfort Inn across the street that costs a fraction of the price of the Atlantis however you can still enjoy ALL of the Atlantis amenities. The Comfort Inn also offers free continental breakfast. Eliminating purchasing breakfast every morning will be helpful in managing your costs.

The water is safe to drink at the Atlantis and they have water bottle refilling stations all over the resort so bring water bottles.

If you eat lunch at one of the poolside restaurants, expect to pay about $15 per person.

With that said, it is a great experience and I have no doubt your family will thoroughly enjoy your vacation.

I second the Comfort Inn which is far less expensive than the other Atlantis hotels. You get up to four bracelets per room, ie, four people can make use of Atlantis. Since the point of going to Atlantis is to enjoy the park and not stay in the hotel room (room's fine btw), it's a great option. People on cruises often book a room there and don't actually spend a night because it's cheaper than paying for Atlantis day passes.

One thing you could try for cheaper meals (and a taste of authentic local seafood) is to walk on the bridge from Atlantis to the Potters Cay area (about 10 minutes walk from paradise island). There are many local and cheaper outlets selling mostly local bahamian style seafood.

I was there last month. For lunches at the resort plan $20+ (and the food is mediocre). Dinner will be $40-80pp depending on whether you dine at a restaurant or a buffet. Drinks are pricey, but there is a happy hour in one of the bars inside the casino.

Google: Atlantis on a Budget

There are a lot of tips that have been posted for budget dining in the past two years.

Your boys will looove the Atlantis. I was told about slow service before we went, but we went with a positive attitude and the slow service did not phase us as we found everyone very friendly and laid back. We made a reservation at Carmines before we went & ate family style one night, ate at a local pizza restaurant another, had sandwiches one night, etc. Pack a suitcase of snacks, cereal, granola bars. There's also Dominoes, Starbucks, and Quiznos in the marketplace area of Atlantis, and a Dunkin Donuts, which sells sandwiches and coffee at US prices at the little shopping center across the street. You can also get huge deli sandwiches (which can be shared) and pizza by the slice by the harbor on ground level.

Its expensive, but really great for kids if you can swing it. We've been twice with much younger kids - even our toddler loves it, but your kids are probably prime age to enjoy all the very many activities.

FYI, for a family of 4 staying 5 nights, we spent about $5-6k, all in. Airfare, accompanations, food, cabs, etc. But for various reasons we booked a two-bedroom apartment in Harborside (part of Atlantis), which definitely added to the cost. Check sites like VRBO for condo/unit rentals. Tons of people have timeshares and need to fill em up.
Pardon typos, I'm probably using my fat thumbs on a tiny phone.

We visited Atlantis Bahamas a couple of years ago. I definitely recommend it... Our family had a tremendous time.

Yes the food is really expensive. If you want to save on food, there are a couple of cheaper options to eat in the Atlantis Marina. Also there is a small grocery store in the Paradise Shopping Plaza right outsize the resort. You could walk over to it to load up on stuff like snacks, milk and some other necessities. I dont remember for sure, but there might have been some cheaper restaurant options in that plaza too. Also there are some fast food options (ie burger and fries) type of places near the water park and pool areas. I remember one near the Cove At Atlantis building.

You could also take the water taxis over to Nassau where there are a lot more options, but that kind of defeats the point of staying at Atlantis.

Thanks All this is really helpful! I’m going to look at maybe a 5 night stay and see how that compares to 6 or 7 including flights. Has anyone used Costco to book at Atlantis?

I’m not sure if I’ll go in July or August.
You would be less likely to have a hurricane or tropical storm in July.
