I have a set of Bose Companion 20 multimedia speakers https://www.crutchfield.com/p_018COMP20 ... ystem.html that I'm very happy with but at $250, they are way out of your target price range. Bose also sells a $99.00 speaker pair that I've not heard. Audiophiles will tell you that Bose is overpriced for what you get and I think they are probably right. I went to my local Best Buy and they had these there to listen to. I thought they were much less "muddy" than other speakers that were available to hear so I bought them. This was on a day when I was in the mood to treat myself.

If you can find a store that has several set up to listen to, then you can make a decision yourself. Picking speakers is very much a personal thing and my sound preference may not be yours.

I recommend some bookshelf speakers with an inexpensive stereo receiver. Yamaha or Sony are good.

I have a set of Altec Lansing ASC45 speakers that I think sound good. Don't remember what I paid. Don't remember when I bought them (maybe >20 years ago). Probably no longer be made. Maybe find them on CL, Amazon, or Ebay.

The $99 Bose speakers another poster referred to is the Bose Companion 2 Series III. Very decent powered speakers, I don't think I've heard better at that price. They are meant as computer speakers but will of course work with anything with a 1/8-inch analog output. Amazon has the Sony XB20 today ("Deal of the Day" at $48 - a great deal if you're looking for something portable, rechargeable, and with Bluetooth wireless connectivity, and they sound very decent for the size/price. The Bose have separate left/right speakers, so they can be placed farther apart for real stereo separation, whereas the Sony has left and right drivers that are a couple of inches apart in the same box, so not much of a soundstage.

Yes, these are good. Sub-woofer plus desktops give fine sound for an office or smaller room.

I recommend headphones so that others don't have to listen to southern gospel music and because most computer speakers are terrible. These are excellent and can be had for around $100 on sale. I paid $111. I use them on airplanes because they do a nice job of noise isolation. Remember to use the Bogleheads Amazon link if you buy from Amazon.
