Hyundai Kona

Post by 50ismygoal » Sat Mar 24, 2018 3:36 pm

I posted a few months ago asking about Hyundai quality, as I was interested in a forthcoming model, the small SUV Kona. The Kona is now hitting dealerships. Anyone else interested? Anyone drive one? I'm thinking about purchasing one but am waiting for some test drives to be published.

Hyundai has come a long way in the last 2 decades. I would consider a Hyundai in any category of vehicle.

Thanks, David Jay. I'm a little hesitant about buying a brand new model, but hoping to get feedback from new owners as time goes by.

I'm also interested in other's feedback after a test drive. I plan to test drive one after they become available.

I may be interested as soon as the electric version comes to the US. I honestly didn't know they were making a gas version until just now.

Lots of media buzz for the electric version, but I'm interested in gas only. But I'm sure they'll have similar characteristics.

Lots of test drives published in the last day or so. Looks like Hyundai had the cars shipped to Hawaii and had the media come over to do the first review road tests there. Expect really unbiased reviews. I am so smitten by the word 'turbo' in this CUV class, but I think I have gotten over my excitement on the Kona after a few hours. If Subaru or Honda would just put a turbo in the crostrek or HR-V, I would have bought already(after careful research :D )

I like the HR-V and expect a redesign in the next year or so. I read some of the Kona reviews and didn't see anything bad. Yet.

Todays bit of humor- I got a quote on a Kona from the local dealer that included $4995 additional dealer markup. OTD price just over $32k for a limited trim.

LOL!

There's also manufacturer finance deals as well as college and military rebates. Plus you might sign up for Uber rebate if you're serious about buying the car. It takes some advanced planning, but my understanding is that you just have to signup to be a driver. It's been around for a while, so it might be over by now or the conditions may have increased. [A local dealer is advertising $1000 affiliate rebate: "Customer must be registered Uber Driver -Customer must provide a copy of the Uber Driver Dashboard showing their registration at the time of purchase"]

Out the door $25k or $26k is probably a decent price once they fill the channel and I'm including a high sales tax rate.

Agreed, but I would make it MY 3 instead of MY 2. Some major issues don't surface until MY 2, sometimes even MY 3. I am really surprised how many people each year jump on the opportunity to be beta testers for car makers with their own hard earned money.

Curious - What is it about the Kona that attracted you?

I have a Honda Fit now, but really like the Honda HRV. But the audio system in the Fit, same as the HRV, is atrocious. And I would like a little more ground clearance and AWD for winter driving. So I like the Kona for it's higher stance, it's AWD, like the interior, and I'm a minimalist so it fits in with that. I may wait for a redesigned HRV, which will likely have Apple Car Play, taking care of the audio system issue.

I went to the dealer today to take a look at the Kona. Since it's Sunday, I avoided having to talk to salespeople, but of course also did not have a chance to sit in the car/check it out. However, I liked what I saw, as the front seats appeared to be roomy. I liked the size of the vehicle and the gas mileage that was posted on the sticker was decent for an AWD vehicle. I'm not sure I love the price, as AWD and heated seats make it a bit pricey, but since I buy used cars, maybe it will be an option in a year or two.

I like the look of the Kona more than the Crosstrek (which test drove, but it seemed to lack the horsepower to get it up the test drive hill without a lot of engine noise.) The hatch/trunk looked quite small on the Kona, as expected, but I'm going to keep it on my "to watch" list as an option for my next vehicle purchase.

Actually, Hyundai street tests most of its new vehicles in Korea for a year or, and then tweaks them.

I sat in one today at the auto show. Pretty comfy. Cargo room quite small tho.

Picked up my new Kona today! I bought a Thunder Gray with gray interior, Limited AWD model. I love it so far (Day 1.)

I visited the local dealer and sat in a Kona. I am 6'2" and the leg room in the Kona was much better (adequate for me) than the HRV (not adequate for me). While I liked the Kona, it seemed a little small for me so I took the Santa Fe for a test drive instead. Really nice car but the steering seemed vague compared to my (high mileage) CR*V. I am not ready to buy yet, but I am kind of leaning toward a Highlander (based mainly on Consumer Reports). Still, the Kona seemed like a nice car, albeit on the small side.

Munemaker, good observations. I'm only 5-11, and I'm a minimalist. My previous car was a Honda Fit. Highlander and CR-V are great choices. Good luck.
