Can’t Login to Ally Bank with Chrome, Firefox works Fine

Post by tinscale » Mon Mar 12, 2018 6:08 pm

Was fine for a couple years until about a 5 weeks ago. The login executes but the 1st page after the login (the dashboard) freezes and stops responding.

I’ve corresponded with Ally twice about it. The first time I informed them of the issue. Their response was to tell me to make sure I was using the latest version of Chrome, clear cache, cookies, history, etc. When I told them I did all that, their response was to tell me to do all that again, and, if the issue persisted, to send them specific info like Chrome version, exact time/date of issue, screenshot of error message or symptom, etc. I sent all that and not a peep from them since.

I can login with Firefox with no problem.

Anyone else having this issue or know how to correct it? I'm using Windows 10.

 Maybe I should tell them I am moving everything to Synchrony if they can't fix it.

Thanks.

Using Chrome under Linux Mint here, I can log in with no problem.

What exactly happens when you try to log in? "Can't log in" is sort of uninformative. Sorry, never mind, just read the rest of the post.

Is it possible it's a Javascript issue? Has Chrome been updated anywhere near when the problem started?

I'm not having an issue using latest 65.0.3325.146 (64-bit) on Win10. What about plug-ins (ad-blockers, no-script, etc.)? Can you duplicate the issue using an Incognito window (look for the three dots upper right corner, select New Incognito Window)?

I had the same issue. (I'm also using Chrome.) I was logging in from an Ally log-in page I had bookmarked several years ago, but it stopped working for some reason. So I went to the main Ally site, clicked to the log-in page and tried it----worked fine. I bookmarked that page and deleted the old bookmark. It has worked ever since.

Tried all the above just now, turned off all extensions, tried incognito, new login page. Will investigate Java script next.

Chrome is Version 65.0.3325.146 (Official Build) (64-bit)

I installed a Javascript error detector extension and it did not detect any errors. Then I uninstalled it.

If you get really frustrated, you might try as a last resort uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome. It may not be an Ally issue, there might be something borked in your browser that some content or other in the Ally site causes to manifest.

I suspect it is not Ally so I would look first on your end. I access Ally on multiple platforms with Chrome and have had, and currently have, no issues. These include IPad, old MacAir, new MacAir, home desktop windows 10, and work desktop, windows 8. Sorry I can't be of much help other than where to look first.

what extensions are you running?

Also, what antivirus/firewall are you running?

do you check this account from multiple locations? or just home?

This is often the problem. Ad blockers can be notorious here. If that's not it and you're willing to get a bit more technical, opening the Developer Tools can often give insight into what's happening.

I echo those who are saying look at your extensions. Things like this happen a lot to me on Chrome every once in a while, and, for me at least, it's almost always the Privacy Badger add-on that I forget I have until a few months later when the problem occurs again on another site. Easy enough to click on the icon and disable the extension for that particular site. Hope this is helpful...

:!: SOLVED :!:

I turned off "hardware acceleration" in Chrome and Ally now loads. Hopefully that won't result in other issues popping up elsewhere.

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions!

Interesting. As an experiment, I turned on "hardware acceleration" here, and it did not seem to make any difference in how the Ally site behaves. So I'm not sure what to make of that.

I wonder if this might be relevant?

I was having a very similar issue logging into Ally - turned off hardware acceleration - fixed!

Thanks!

My machine has an AMD Radeon graphics card, but that article is pretty spot on.

Security updates for Adobe Flash were installed on 1/10/18 and 2/7/18, and a cumulative Windows 10 update was installed on 1/5/18.

I'm not positive I logged into Ally in January. I didn't make any $ transfers, and don't know if I might have just logged in to check a balance or something. So, the issue could have started after one of those updates.

Just a datapoint - turning off hardware acceleration also fixed the issue for me.
