Heads up: Moto G5 Plus 32 Unlocked phone at Costco $179

Post by sunny_socal » Tue Feb 27, 2018 6:54 pm

The Moto G5 Plus Unlocked 32GB phone is on sale at Costco until 2/28/18

That's a very good deal for an entry/mid cell phone! In fact it's better than 'flagship' phones from a few years ago. Just pop in your SIM card and go! :beer

I got one from Costco last fall when they had a similar deal. Great price and a very good phone. Sure the iphones are nice but I get by with the camera in the Moto G5 Plus just fine.

If a bogleheads stamp of approval existed, the Moto G5 Plus would be on the list.

FYI, if you get the 64gb version you get 4gb ram instead of the 32gb version which has only 2gb ram. Well worth getting more ram

I refuse to purchase a phone from a Chinese owned phone company. See also, articles on Huawei Electronics phones, and security issues.

Hmmmmm. Did not realize Motorola is a Chinese company. I was under impression Google owns it.

Lenovo purchased Motorola from Google. I have no issues with that.

Next, people will want a phone with ALL parts made in the USA.

IMHO the Huawei thing is utterly overblown. Pretty much all electronics today are made in China or have a large part of the components made in China. And those Chinese companies are all tied in one way or another to the Chinese state, in the system of "market economy with Chinese characteristics." Is there some vulnerability there? Sure, and that vulnerability could be greater in very specific instances. But I'm skeptical that they could, say, simply capture the phone calls of every user of every Huawei phone - that kind of an exploit that would be far, far too obvious.

There's plenty to be worried about these days with regard to privacy, but I'm much more concerned by things like the Experian hack and the amount of sensitive data that companies like Google and Facebook have on all of us than about potential vulnerabilities associated with the provenance of mass-produced electronics.

I do own lots of electronics and they are Chinese made, but they are not directed by a Chinese company. Moto was purchased by a Chinese company, Lenovo, from Google, and personally I just don't trust Lenovo. I also do not believe the Huewei Electronics thing is overblown. Believe me, I love good deals too, but I believe it is better to be cautious with the security of these highly personal items.

Back on topic, get the 64gb version for the extra RAM, it's well worth it, and it's been on sale as low as $199. You can set a keyword alert at Slickdeals or other deals site, for notification when there's a good deal. Costco doesn't carry the larger RAM version

32gb is more than enough for me. Got mine last Thxgvg during my first ever black friday sale with friends. Used their Costco card to get the phone for $159. Not only that, store was virtually empty.

Difference between this phone and my 1st Gen Moto is night and day. Can't believe I waited so long. Phone is awesome.

Glad to hear it you only have 2gb RAM, which is your phones working memory, and affects how many things you can keep open, how quickly it responds when you switch between apps, etc. The upgraded one for $20ish more has double, to 4gb. Cheers

I bought this when it was on sale for I think $169 last fall, also from Costco. Extremely happy with this super fast phone with tons of memory for my needs. Only thing is camera is not the best, but it's good enough for me.

Amazon currently has a Prime Exclusive deal for the 64 gb storage/4gb ram version for $219.99. This is around the best price I have seen so far.

The G6 is coming out in the not too distant future which should bring the price down even further.

Phone to me is nothing more than a productivity tool, so I never have a need to have more than perhaps one or two apps open at a time, if that. Phone is lightening fast as is and the upgrade was about $50 more and not at all worth it in my case. The mileage of others may vary.

Be careful of unlocked phones on the Verizon network.
We have a couple of unlocked Moto G4's.
They work fine in the US, but do not work with the Verizon International plans.

Y'all -

Just thought I would revive this thread to alert interested folks to another sale on the moto g5+. This time it's at Amazon, not Costco... here's a link to the 32gb version, which is available for $175 --

https://www.amazon.com/Moto-PLUS-5th-Ge ... BWG60&th=1

The 64gb one goes for $210. The 32gig is temporarily out of stock, so I just spent a few more $$$ and got the 64gig version. I'm a happy Boglehead -- it's a really good phone for a really good price. I'll have to post this in the what-frugal-thing-did-you-do-today thread....

P.S. This offer is only available to Prime subscribers.

I've had this phone since November and love it except for one thing. The speaker phone is ridiculously low on volume during a phone call. Very hard to hear someone while using it. Do a Google search and you will find lots of complaints for that.

My wife has a GS5 Plus special edition. Bought from Best Buy. She loves the phone. After my google pixel 2 dies some day the G series moto I will consider.

My Moto 1st Gen had the same problem. I downloaded this app Volume Booster and it solved the problem.

After seeing the post here last week, I ordered 1 for my spouse. Is a really nice phone and pretty light. I have an iphone but if I were to buy a new one, I would get this Moto instead of iphone. To me nothing special about the iphone except is multiple times more expensive than a moto phone. And I do like android better.

It appears there are several different Volume Booster apps in the store. Which company did you choose?

It's the one by "GOODEV". The icon has a red background with what appears to be a white speaker facing to the right with what appears to be 3 white lines mimicking sound waves.

IIRC, I chose it because of the good reviews and now I agree with those reviews. It did the job.

Seriously, anyone thinking about buying a Moto G5 plus needs to read the complaints in the Motorola forum and the total lack of help by the moderators. It is 31 pages long and Motorola is doing nothing to fix the low volume problem.

No, I never had it on the 1st Gen. Only downloaded it on the G5 Plus. After installing, you have to open the app and change the settings. I have my "Volume" setting in the app set to 100% and the "Boost" set at 44%. I also opened the Settings icon in the app and changed the Maximum Allowed Boost to 60% (heeding the warning that higher settings could damage the speaker). One thing I noticed is when I'm listening to a voicemail for example, sometimes the sound starts out low. I just hit the phone's volume button as if I were turning it up (even though it's always at full volume) and then I can hear with no problems. As I said, the app solved volume problems for me with listening to anything on speakerphone.

I noticed the volume issue. Also, my headphone jack does not work with my headset. Apparently this is a widespread problem, and there might be a manufacturing defect with the jack. Otherwise it's okay for the price.

Thanks saltycaper that did increase the volume some what.
