All the wants I had in that range are satisfied. But if I had $20k it would go toward either my outdoor area remodel / hot tub or my Ferrari fund.

Something I do is have a list of wants that I periodically add stuff too as flights of fancy cross my mind. Then when I lay out my budget for the current year, usually in dec/ Jan I take a look at the list and pick one or two that I want to build not budget.
You can do anything you want in life. The rub is that there are consequences.

It's always funny to see these threads bring out the folks that feel the need to denigrate others choices especially when it comes to high end watches.

I'm not necessarily "saving up for" but trying to resist the temptation of a new Willys Jeep Wrangler just for fun because it really isn't in the retirement plan but the pull is almost at critical mass. I'm looking around for a good deal since the JL is out now but I'm not sure I can justify it as a new toy so we'll see.

Saving for 50th anniversary cruise in June '18. Taking 31 people, so will require significantly more than the 20K!

In the next 6 months, I will:

1. Buy a house

2. Buy a new minivan

3. Buy a car (possibly new)

4. Fully furnish the house

It's gonna cost a pretty penny. Luckily, I've been planning for it for several years.

Man, that would be worth throwing whatever you spend to have it happen. 50th anniversary (never to repeated) AND having all your family around for the experience. IT is difficult to say, but we all eventually die and how much we have in the bank account does not define folk's memories of us after we have passed. Now, remembering grandpa and grandma or uncle and aunties all paid cruise is NOT to forgotten.

What I would love is to have more meaningful time with friends and family. Having a trip where we have 10+ couple friends in a VRBO for a week right next to the beach every year is my dream. One day when the kid's are a bit older and folk's schedules slow down a little we will make this happen. This summer we are doing mini dream of this plan with 3 couples and their kids and looking forward to it.

Good luck.

Thanks for that, StayTheCourse.

It's certainly not a boglehead type of idea, but we think it'll be "eventful" -- especially considering that both sides of the family have their share of dysfunctionals and primadonnas! The final purchase will likely be a full bottle of Crown Royal!

A lot of Bogleheads have considerable taxable accounts. If you are saving up to buy a large purchase (in excess of say $20,000), what might that item be?

Around my neighborhood I see a lot of folks have boats and recreational vehicles. I suspect most are paying monthly on them though. At my megacorp a lot of folks like to do international travel and some of their trips are in excess of $20,000.

(Reason for my post is I have bit of taxable saved up and thinking about what I might spend it on if I chose to spend it.)

I agree. If it's not your cup of tea then just don't say anything. Corn18 I think that watch is beautiful.

I'm saving up for a newer car and to increase my taxable account/savings fund for a bit more piece of mind.

Have all of the above - new hot tub last year (spent only half of $10k on the hot tub, the rest on construction).
New HVAC before we moved into the McMansion 8 years ago. Was $30k for a 10-zone system, 2 AC units, 2 heaters.
Said McMansion was only $800k foreclosed, though. Still in VHCOL. Not mortgage free yet but it could be with a few clicks.

It's not always all it's cracked up to be. McMansion costs a lot to maintain. Plumbing nightmare this week with the upstairs laundry overflowing into one of the 5 in-wall toilets that came with the house, and flooding the home theater underneath . Before that at Xmas time it was the R.O. system in the upstairs kitchen also leaking and flooding same home theater below. Not fun !

To stay on topic : I'm saving for some 4K video camera equipment. Hoping not to spenD $20K. Probably around $5K. Panasonic GH5s plus some accessories and lenses.

pipe-dream level: gently used 987.2 Cayman (but probably will never have the nuts to pull the trigger, I work from home and don't drive my current vehicle enough to justify a 2nd toy in the garage, sigh...)

reality level: new kitchen remodel (likely multiples of >20k)

family level: fund baby girl's 529 plan...

I don't think we've ever spent >$20K on any single "thing" except our house. Our cars have always been < $20K apiece, always paid for from our normal "cash cushion" which we replenished afterwards. The only other thing in that range that I can remember are a new carport and deck which IIRC was about $15K, 25 years ago. We paid for that with a small inheritance from an aunt. If we did it now, it would probably be >$20K because of inflation.

The most we've ever spent on a vacation has been $3K or so: 2-3 week car trips or trips to Europe, staying in cheap hotels or with friends and relatives. No kids, so just the two of us.

We have a room that is all (old) windows but no heat/ac that we’d like to make into a four seasons room. I’m thinking 30-40k but we are in a HCOL. All new windows, new door, bump the ceiling higher, flooring, new lights, and a stand alone ac/heating unit. It would be like adding a family/mudroom on the main level of our home.

I currently own 3 vehicles, all are 2007's, I want to sell all 3 and buy a new Honda Accord for my wife and a new Ford F-150 for me, that comes to about $80K, maybe around $65k if I get $5k a piece for my older vehicles. Note; I'm 56 and have never owned a new vehicle, I'm due.

We saved for 3 things: 1) house downpayment; 2) college funds; and 3) retirement. Everything else is paid out of cash flow or our emergency fund, which is replenished when it goes below a certain level.

Mainly saving for that nice country home I've always dreamed of. We are waiting until our girls are out of school, so I'll be waiting a while (they are 4 and 1 years old). The decision now is where to put it...I'd really hate to put that much money in a MM fund, and the timeline is long enough to possibly justify some equity investment. Still mulling that one over... :beer

FWIW, Corn18 has had several updates about his watch-buying phase. I think he ended up spending $270k in a short amount of time on watches and then realized he wasn't into it. I think he re-sold almost all of them and now wears a Timex (or the like).
Humans spend their hard-earned money in very strange ways.

Of course if you're dropping that much money on watches, I doubt it was "hard-earned".

I was at the store the other night, and I was buying a 6-pack of IPA for $10. The cashier asked if it was any good, and I said I liked it a lot, and she should get some. She said, "Nah, it's not worth an hour's pay to buy that". Wow, that put it into perspective for me.
What a ridiculously judgmental statement. I've collected watches for a long time, and have spent upwards of $20k on particularly significant pieces, and I've earned every penny through working hard.

I'll never understand, particularly when it comes to watches, why some people just can't accept that they don't 'get it', and that's simply their own point of view.

Ha, I actually came in to post that I'm saving for an ALS 1815 Up/Down...

I had an FP Journe Chronometre Bleu a few years back, but I was in my late 20's and just didn't have the lifestyle for it. Now I'm a bit older, I think I can pull off a high end dress watch. Right now I wear my Rolex 1675 pretty much every day. An ALS would probably be my last major watch purchase. I find that most collectors go through the cycle of wanting to collect everything, but then having a more focused collection as they really figure out what they like. I'm definitely at that point where I just want 4-5 really nice pieces that I'll keep for life.

Prior to this thread, I'd never even heard of ALS. But the Grand Langes that have been posted here are beautiful. Don't know that I'm at a point in my life where I could allow myself to spend $30k on a watch, but certainly could see myself doing so once my comfortable retirement is "guaranteed". Until then, the geek in me gets to settle for a Tag Huer Connected Modular 45, exactly one order of magnitude less expensive.

Nothing! We have everything we could want. Our health and family come first! The older I get the less material items or possessions I want or need.

Keep your financial life and your non financial life simple. The benefits and positives are great and pay good dividends!
Couldn't agree more. I've not been able to find any better feeling than that derived from the elegance of a simple and free life. It's been said that aging is often equated with loss. I absolutely agree. With age comes loss of the enslavement to all those things I thought I had to be, or do, or have, all of which were vacant and which never trulymade me feel fulfilled anyway. Not to say I don't spend money. I do. In fact, I'll be spending many multiples of $20K next year on housing. It's just that I'm clear on what such spending does and does not equate to.

It helps that I just finished my advanced degree in retirement freedom, satisfaction, and fulfillment.
