Tax Software - Turbotax Deluxe $39.86 Amazon

Post by Marjimmy » Thu Feb 01, 2018 1:29 pm

What tax software are you using this year and why?

I've read previous post but nothing recently.... Are there any good sales out there? I feel like spending $39.86 isn't TOO bad to file federal and state. Turbo tax through their own website wants to charge $39.99 for federal and $36 for state.... Outrageous.

So again,
What software are you using, how much are you paying for it, and why? :moneybag

I will probably use TurboTax, because I've been using it for years, and I'm lazy.

I use Turbotax Deluxe from Amazon as well. I've used it for almost a decade now so I will continue to use it unless it doubles or triples in price over the competition and the cost difference makes it worth my time to change over to and learn other software.

I bought TurboTax Deluxe from Amazon.
Just be careful that you buy the one that includes 1 state. It's $10 more than the Federal alone. Otherwise you will have to buy the state separately from within the program, which I think would cost $40.

I'll be using FreeTaxUSA. Federal is completely free and supports all forms unlike the "free" versions of Turbotax and H&R Block that are crippled unless you pay to upgrade.

I bought HRBlock Deluxe from Amazon.com . I paid for it with my free bonus from last year from HRBlock at Amazon.com. With state, it was about $25. I will get a free bonus from using it which makes the final cost less than zero. Yep, that's right: Get paid to use free tax software.

What is your adjusted gross income? The IRS has links to tax preparing firms which will do it for free>
https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/jsp/index.jsp if your AGI is under $66,000. (and some states as well)

You can get Turbotax for free from that link, but your AGI must be under $33,000.

I am using free OLT.com for state and federal.

I ordered the $40 fed + state Turboxtax Deluxe from Amazon, received it yesterday, and I'm starting to enter my data today. Seems that I won't get all the forms I need until the end of the month or maybe mid-March.

I wondered how they make money. Their website says:

"Curious how we make money?
We make money from our state tax return and other optional services. You receive excellent value for every dollar spent."

So my tax return would cost $0 + $12.95. Makes me wonder how they can afford to pay their staff of 150+ US-based employees to develop and support the software. I guess if they can convince millions of people to switch, it might work out. And it might put pressure on larger competitors like Intuit and HR Block to compete better.

I'll be using my free Fidelity Turbotax download. I think I will need to pay for state filing.

I used them for the first time this year. Personally I found their website nicer to use than turbotax and taxact.

I realized that the PC download was $10 more than the PC disc so I went with the disk for $39.86 federal and tax.... We'll see how it goes.... Maybe next year H.R block?

I agree - it's a decent site. It took me a few tries the first time to figure out how to document a backdoor Roth, but other than that it's just as easy to use as any of the other big name tax programs.

I bet a lot of people pay the extra fee for state returns. I live in a place with no state tax, so nothing extra added on for me.

So in your case, what does "You receive excellent value for every dollar spent." mean?

Bought TT Deluxe Fed + efile + state on disc a month ago from Amazon for $39. I've used TT for many years. In many states, the state return is so simple you can just do it with "paper & pencil" once youy've done Federal, and mail it in.

I bought H&R Block Taxcut because it was quite cheap. But then I got Turbotax for even less (free from Fidelity) so I called H&R Block and got a no questions asked refund.

Amazon typically has a good price for TurboTax- better than the supposed discounts offered by my brokerages, employers, etc. That's the power of volume.

For some reason this year is was cheaper to buy the CD version than the downloadable. Doesn't make sense, but it's what it was...
