Impreza vs Corolla

Post by Leesbro63 » Sun Jan 28, 2018 5:29 pm

I seem to recall reading that these two are essentially the same car, with Impreza being the AWD version. Is that correct?

Wow, that would be startling news to me.

No, not the same, although Subaru and Toyota have done a joint car recently...

That car is the Scion FR-S/Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ, which is built by Subaru in Japan.

A Corolla used to be the same car as a Geo Prism, I think? Sounds wrong since the Geo is a a Chevy product, but I'm pretty sure that's the deal.

Geo used be the same as Corolla as Chevy was stamping Corolla's with Geo branding.
Impreza and Corolla are vastly different in engine config. They are hardly any brothers.

The Impreza has a Subaru designed and built horizontally opposed boxer engine, as most Subaru products do— very different from a Toyota.

If you want a car that is fun to drive, the Impreza. If you want a car that will go 300,000 miles as long you maybe change the oil every 4 or 5 years, the Corolla.

They were actually building them together in the NUMMI joint venture factory in Fremont, CA that now churns out Teslas.

One big difference between Subaru products and Toyota/Lexus products is the in-car electronics.

Some Subaru models are now supporting CarPlay (such as Outback). Toyota/Lexus is "going their own way" and does not support CarPlay (although bluetooth connectivity still works). While the proximity sensors in my wife's Lexus are awesome (particularly the front corner ones), the in-car electronics are an annoyance.

I don't know whether the Impreza specifically supports CarPlay.

If you need AWD or the 5 door variation, Impreza. If not, Corolla.

I've owned both Subaru and Toyota.

Subarus are fun to drive for people who have never driven a German car. People who have never owned a Toyota consider Subarus to be reliable.

Impreza is sportier

Corolla is more reliable

I'd pick the Impreza personally

Be sure to do an "apples to apples" comparison. The Corolla has a lot of advanced safety features on all trim levels but with the Impreza you have to pay for a higher trim level to get them. The safety packages are not identical so you also need to look at the details.
(Disclosure, I just bought a Corolla.)

They are totally different cars. And, the Subaru is the one likely to have expensive engine repairs and the Toyota is reliable.

I like that car too. Not as much pickup as I would like though. I felt the Impreza had the most oomph when I test drove them

I've driven plenty of German cars. In fact, after a track day in an M3, I was left wishing I could have done it in my Subaru (WRX STI). I find most German cars from the last decade or so to be a bit sterile feeling. E46 era BMWs and earlier are much better.

Of course, Subarus are not as reliable as Toyotas. AWD and boxer engines are never going to be as simple as a traverse flat four and FWD. To the OP: I'd go Impreza if you live in a snowy/mountainous area. There's a reason why they are popular in Vermont and Colorado. For most of the country, however, the Toyota is probably the better car. Neither are cars I'd consider "fun." As stated before, they are nowhere near the same car. Only the FT86 twins (Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86) are the same.

Yes. That was back in the 90s. GM had both Saturn and Geo brands as attempts to compete with compact Japanese cars, but didn't quite know what to do with the brands. In the case of Geo, they just resorted to licensing actual Japanese models (the Geo Tracker and Metro were Suzukis, the Storm and Spectrum were a Izuzus). I suppose it was a way of selling Japanese cars to people who refused to consider imports. Stamp a GM brand on it and it became an "American" car.

I've never understood what people mean by German cars are fun to drive. If you want fun to drive get a go-kart. If you want fun to drive that is street legal get a Deux Chevaux. You'll enjoy that wonderful feeling of living on the edge. Mostly because at 30 mph in a Deux Chevaux you are living on the edge.

I owned a Lotus Elise, so I would argue that I've already owned a go Kart.
