Capital one 360 money market New $500 bonus

Post by petras52 » Fri Jan 19, 2018 10:49 pm

Hi..I just received a letter offering 1.3% interest if I open a new capital one 360 money market account and an additional $500 if deposit amount is $50 k or more. The interest is over 10x what my bank currently pays. It does not offer a debit card or checking and transfers to my checking account are limited to six per month but with no limit on the amounts. Anyone have recent experience with this company, good or bad?..thanks

I've had an account there. No complaints other than the rate was not the highest I could get. How long would you need to keep 50k there to get the bonus?

I just got 200 for a 10k deposit. Worked great. I like their smart phone app too. Much better than others I have. Do you mind sharing the url for that? Is it /save500now ? before the new year it was /save200now

I have been using them as my only bank for over a year. Their online program used to be better and for some reason, they went backwards. It is still ok though, so overall I am satisfied. Be forwarded, they do not do TOD accounts.

So you cannot designate beneficiaries?

Are folks not concerned about 1099 they will receive next year? To me this is always a big issue when signing up for any bank bonuses for opening accounts, I prefer to stay with credit card rewards. The award money after you factor in taxation is lesser than the number.

Credit card rewards are on the money you spend. Bank rewards are on the money you have. There is no opportunity cost here to chose the bank reward, you can still do credit card as usual. $500 after all the taxes are still bigger than $0

I agree, I was simply pointing out that rewards are smaller than their face value. To many people a $200 bonus isnt worth a credit inquiry, to others it is.

Can you post a link to this? I keep Googling around Cap1 but cannot find this bonus.

Here's more info: capitalone.com/my500bonus, promo code: my500bonus, deposit $50k by 2/16/18. Looks like this is a promo for current capital one cc customers who receive the promo letter. Bonus credited within 6-8 weeks, interest rate is variable but trending up lately, if balance drops to less than $10k, interest rate drops to .60%. Call 800-289-1992 for more info.

No, it's not an either/or question. I'm doing both, getting CC rewards and bank bonuses. CC rewards are more lucrative, but many of the bank bonuses don't take much work to get.

As I said it’s not about work, it’s about how many rings you are comfortable with. I wanted to point out that X amount on bank rewards isn’t same as on CC rewards.

I am, due to CG's/Div's/roth conversions impact on ACA PTC/subsidies. I don't want bank bonus $ showing up in my MAGI.

I remember few months back (Around June) CapitalOne had a targeted $400 bonus promotion for opening a checking account (Only requirement was 2 direct deposits).
People who did not get the targeted letter and used the promotion link, ended up receiving the bonus (me included) few days after the requirement was met.
So there is a good chance this is the case here as well. $500 is pretty sweet, even after taking the interest tax into account.

Here's the thread from those of us who took advantage of the $200 bonus for $10k deposit before 12/31/2017: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=236001

Did this a few years ago. Did one account for me and one for spouse. Received $1,000. We keep cash at AMX bank anyway in savings (I think it is 1.35 %) so all it took was setting up the accounts. No problems getting the bonuses and then closing the accounts.

Thanks for the heads up.

Was anyone able to get this bonus and did not get the targeted offer?
If the application goes through with the promotion code, does that mean the bonus is expected to be posted?
How long do I have to keep the account open with the 50k in it?

BTW, maybe "personal finance" subforum is more appropriate for this thread (I usually see bank bonuses threads there)

See the previous Doctor of Credit threads for comments from people who used the promo codes without receiving the offer in the mail or by email: https://www.google.com/search?q=%22capi ... credit.com

According to some comments in the most recent Capital One bonus thread, https://www.doctorofcredit.com/ymmv-cap ... s-1-4-apy/, it looks like Capital One is more strictly checking for people who received the targeted offer on this bonus cycle, even with just the $200 bonus for depositing $10k.

I received a promotional flyer for this offer in the mail today. Apparently it has been extended to February 16. Seriously thinking of pulling $50,000 from American Express FSB (1.45% vs 1.40% for Capital One) to get the bonus.

I have credit freezes in effect at the three major bureaus. I guess I would need to lift the freeze at the right bureau temporarily, to allow for a soft pull.

I opened a CapitalOne 360 account last year, took a similar bonus home. And yup, I did receive the dreaded 1099 a few days ago. Oh well, this remains clearly beneficial.

I'm missing something here. Why is a bank bonus 1099 more dreaded than any other 1099?

Usually. I haven't found a direct listing from CapitalOne, but here's a 3rd party notice of the promotion:
http://www.bankcheckingsavings.com/capi ... us-review/
You won’t be eligible for the bonus if you currently have, or have had, a savings product with Capital One Bank, Capital One 360 or ING Direct, or if you are a Capital One associate.
Sure beats the $25 I got over a decade ago when I joined ING, before they were bought by Capital One.

Now that they're selling off their brokerage accounts to E-trade, so I will no long have a convenient link between my savings and IRA accounts, I really have no more reasons to stay with Capital One. If they keep pouring money into new customer promotions instead of retaining customers with market-leading interest rates, Ally or others have a good chance of stealing my business away.

I didn't say it is. Nor was I complaining. My statement was a bit in jest, referring to the fact that a bonus when opening a credit card account doesn't lead to the same taxation issue (hence tax form).

I see. I wasn't aware credit card account bonuses are handled differently. How does that work? I thought even forgiveness of debts like a credit card balance was taxable.

I'm not sure it helps anyone else, but shortly after griping about Capital One's new account promotions vs. interest rates, I checked the mail and found a $400 offer from Key Bank if I open a new checking account and have at least one direct deposit made. Account must be kept open at least 180 days.

It has what looks to be a unique reservation number, so I don't know if those who didn't get a mailer can participate, but if anyone is looking for one more promotion, you might try checking online for info on what Key Bank offers. This is what I found in a quick search:

I got the KeyBank mailer. One restriction that I noted regarding what qualifies as a direct deposit - it is limited to “payroll, Social Security, pension, and government benefits.”

I had a KeyBank checking account a couple of years ago, but I would qualify because I have not had a KeyBank account in the last 12 months.

Go to Doctor of Credit. Ally and Chase ACH transfers have counted as direct deposits and should trigger the bonus. Worked for me and DW last year.

We were not targeted for the $400 bonus and I got the reserve code in a chat session with a rep last year and used Ally to ACH the DD requirement. Gladly paid the $25 early closure fee and closed the account.

Yes, no offer. Got the $500 bonus! I do not believe there is any time requirement for the deposit.

Credit card sign-up bonuses are currently seen as discounts on money that was spent, which is why they are not currently taxable, just like coupons or sales savings are not taxable. Bank account sign-up bonuses are seen as additional interest, so it's taxable just like regular interest is taxable. Both of these interpretations of course could change in the future.

Do you have a savings account with Capital One?
I'm getting "The promo code you have entered is not valid" on the confirmation page. One of the terms of this bonus is not to have any "savings product" with them (I do), so I'm trying to find out if they enforce that or not.

Was anyone able to get this bonus and did not get the targeted offer?
If the application goes through with the promotion code, does that mean the bonus is expected to be posted?
How long do I have to keep the account open with the 50k in it?

BTW, maybe "personal finance" subforum is more appropriate for this thread (I usually see bank bonuses threads there)
Yes, no offer. Got the $500 bonus! I do not believe there is any time requirement for the deposit.

I think that will disqualify you. I got 200 (before I knew about the 500 bonus) with mine and then signed my wife up for the 500 bonus. If you have a partner, you can have them try. Crazy easy money.

I signed up for the bonus. I was happy that I did not have to unfreeze my credit for a soft pull. I am guessing that this is because I already had a relationship with Capital One - a Quicksilver credit card. I was directed to logon with my Quicksilver credentials when applying for the bonus.

If it was a CC they would have done hard pull, no matter what relationship you have.

Can anyone tell me how long it took for your money to deposit? Including waiting for the micro transfers? I want to do this but don't want to be a day late!

For the micro-deposits, it took a while in my case, with a weekend involved. I initiated the process on February 7 - likely late in the day - and did not see the small transfers until February 12. Subsequent, normal ACHs happened at normal speed.

The micro-transfers to verify the source account take 2-4 business days (pay mind to upcoming banking holidays when starting the process). Both accounts I linked had the micro-transfers within 3 business days, but that's a relatively small sample set.

For the last round of bonuses with the December 31st deadline, I confirmed the source account and initiated the $10k deposit before the deadline. The deposit did not finalize until after the deadline, but I still received the bonus. The same was reported by several others in that thread.

The one issue I've had (and a rather significant one, at least until it is resolved) is the fact that the system does not allow one to add a joint account holder if [the potential additional account holder] once had an auto loan with Capital One. Capital One would like to fix the problem; however, the tech folks have been unable to do so as of yet. Super annoying, as my wife can't add me until Capital One takes care of this.

Regarding adding a joint account owner, I also initially had some trouble trying to add my wife to the 360 money market account. The on line process kept repeating in a circular fashion until I temporarily changed some privacy settings on my browser. After that it went smoothly..

From what I understand, Capital One bonuses are once in a lifetime, correct?
That's still true. I got a $50 bonus 13 years ago 😁😁

Bank bonuses are definitely easier than CC bonuses, and they don’t involve a credit check (usually just a soft pull). Info about the rare cases where a hard credit check is used is available at Doctor of Credit, so those bonuses are easy to avoid. And the 1099-INT that’s generated by a bank bonus is the same as any other 1099 income. Of course it’s taxed, so it turns free money into a smaller amount of free money.

Credit card bonuses are seemingly more lucrative, but it’s not free money like bank bonuses are. It’s discounts on money you’ve already spent, and it’s often in the form of points or miles, which may not be as helpful to you as cash. Using this little hobby, I’ve grown our EF account from 20k to 25k over the last year or so (after tax) with just bank bonuses, no new money. It’s worth just as much to me for the entertainment value; it’s kind of a fun little game.

Ouch. We made $1,100 last year in Cap One bonuses.
