Family Videos

I am looking to get a camcorder just for home use. My budget is approx 1500. Also looking for a simple way to store the files for easy playback. Any bogleheads have a rig they like? I definitely want to have 1080 preferably 4k/UHD.

Many will record to Micro SD cards now. Then you copy/transfer to your PC/Laptop for storage.

Micro SD cars are very cheap now. You can have multiple 32gb or 64gb cards for plenty of storage. You can get 128gb and 200gb cards now for under $50 if you watch for deals.

$1,500 would likely buy 5 or 6 very nice camcorders. Maybe try a few out at your local Best Buy or electronics store.

The Sony mirror-less A series DSLR cameras take amazing video now. If you want a DSLR and a great camcorder, that would be a way to use up your $1,500 budget. You would have to budget for lenses and other add-ons.

My iPhone meets all those requirements including 4k resolution and is always in my pocket ready to use.

Try a Panasonic FZ 1000 ( approx $600-700) or similar. Allows for still photos AND brilliant HD Video! It's the perfect combo camera for family activities, imho.

Personally I don't think 4k is worth the extra file sizes. I'd like the ability to cloud store. Have multiple backups. An SD card is not reliable unlike an SSD or HDD.
