Hulu, Your Current Favorite Show

Post by pennstater2005 » Thu Jan 11, 2018 4:16 pm

Obviously piggybacking off of the popular Netflix favorite show thread.....

I recently switched from Netflix to Hulu. I have found a few shows I like to watch on Hulu. Baskets, The Goldbergs, Key and Peele and a few others. My problem is the user interface on the Roku I have isn't great. It's not easy to search for shows. So, any recommendations are welcome. Thanks!

Hulu did a big change to their user interface a few months back and it's much harder to browse content because they show only one title at a time. I have used hulu on Roku 3, Apple TV, iPad, iPhone and the UI is bad on all of those devices. You can try logging on to hulu.com on your computer to browse for content.

Give these a try: Handmaid's Tale, This is Us

Chance
Dimension 404 (a somewhat rip-off of Black Mirror over on Netflix, but I still liked it)

Blackish has some really funny episodes and some that are so so.

Shut eye is pretty good, its kind of like a USA "characters welcome" type show about a gypsy crime syndicate.

We have watched the entire Deep Space 9 series again except for the series finale and its a lot better than I remembered as a kid.

The new HULU UI does look better and it is better if you just want to watch the next show in your series but if you have a longer list of shows you watch or want to look for specific episodes then it sucks.

Part of the reason I switched to Hulu, for now, was because I was out of stuff on Netflix. The other part was the auto preview on the Roku of Netflix shows. It drove me crazy and there was no way to turn it off. I'm not talking about the autoplay feature. That was fine.

Thanks for the recommendations so far. The Handmaid's Tale is intriguing. I've caught bits and pieces of black-ish when it's been on OTA.

I wonder if there is a single subscriber who likes the revamped Hulu user interface. Personally I think it’s horrible.

It's bad. But I do enjoy the new and differing content versus Netflix.

My suggestion is to use a computer or tablet to identify shows and then put it in the My Stuff folder.

The Lineup will give suggestions based on past viewing.

If you like Goldbergs, you will probably like Fresh off the Boat.

I found Superstore and it's fairly funny. The Handmaid's Tale is sort of brutal to watch.

Hulu has all 15 seasons of the medical drama ER now. That's over 330 episodes

My wife binge-watches "Brooklyn Nine Nine" on Hulu. We also enjoy "Shark Tank" and "Total Divas" (don't judge).

We love a ton of British comedies available on Hulu:

Peep Show
Toast of London
The Mighty Boosh
Pramface

are a few of our favorites.

Thanks! We were subscribed to Acorn TV for a couple months through the Roku and enjoyed a few British shows namely Doc Martin. We did for the most recent season which wasn’t on Netflix. It’s only $4.99/month and they have tons of Britain, New Zealand, Canadian, and Australian tv shows.

With my FREE HULU on out "family" Sprint cell phone plan, I am going through Law and Order SVU episode by episode. Now on season 7.

Watch either on my Moto 4 smartphone or desktop.

After I do the Law and Order SVU - I will probably watch Will and Grace (starting in 1998 episodes).

Thanks for the tips. Just got Hulu a week ago specifically to watch Handmaid since it won several awards. As a long time Netflix user I am not too impressed so far. Handmaid was good (albeit deeply disturbing at times), but Netflix has a pretty outstanding lineup of original content so I'll have to be pretty impressed with Hulu to keep it beyond the trial period. My biggest issue with it is that the app on my smart tv hangs up about 50% of the time when it tries to launch a commercial so I have to bounce out and back in again. My wifi is blazing fast and we stream Netflix, FiOS on demand, online games on Xbox Live, etc. without a problem so I know it is the Hulu app and not my wifi. I'm not sure Hulu has the content for me to justify upping to the commercial free version, but we'll see. Thanks for the suggestions!

You can upgrade your free trial to the no commercials version. That's what I did. It was unwatchable with even limited commercials. Hulu's interface is not great but I've been finding some good content.

While I agree the new UI is terrible, hard to beat thevno commercials option. I hate trying to fast fwd over commercials when I use dvr ok cable or other services. I fact hulu live has dvr too, and it stinks like the others. But if you are patient to wait a day, they have streaming w/o commercials for many (not all) shows and no need to dvr (similar to netflix). Lots of exceptions where there are commercials, depending on the deal they have with the network. CBS shows have commercials but generally you can avoid on fox, nbc and abc (these are owners of hulu) for $4/mo.

I dont really think of “favorites on hulu” outside hulu’s own content. Mostly I think of this as a superior cable alternative, since I can watch on other devices, avoid commercials on network tv, add/remove services without calling to tak to a rep, and their own shows are bonus.

Of their own shows, I did find Handmaid fascinating. That said, recent real world events make that show less entertaining and more scary. But not going into detail there. I have found more non-network streaming on Netflix that hulu. I only keep hulu (live) to watch sports and a handful of network shows that I could live without.

Just started a Hulu original called "The Wrong Mans". (yes, mans) James Corden is actually in it.

A city council worker is walking to work in the snow. A car swerves around him and wrecks. After the scene is cleared he hears a phone ringing and picks it up. It's a man saying he has until five o'clock to bring the money or his wife will die. And the story starts.

Getting ready to start Shut Eye. A dark comedy about storefront psychics and the crime syndicate that runs them. Trailer looked good and it's another Hulu original.

Also looking forward to The Looming Towers. It starts on February 28th. Trailer link below.

I signed up for a free one-week trial of Hulu Live in order to watch the Olympic figure skating content on NBCsn. I didn’t want to continue with that ($39.99) so when the trial ended yesterday switched to basic Hulu.

I have Netflix and Prime but the previews for The Looming Towers look good. (Love Jeff Daniels.) In the meantime I’ve been watching Designated Survivor with Kiefer Sutherland.

I liked "The Bridge". Set in Sweden/Denmark with subtitles.

Not sure if it is still available as we let our Hulu subscription lapse.

My new show - Designated Survivor - or as I call it - 24 meets westwing - with Jack Baur as president.

I haven’t gotten started yet on The Looming Towers. But it looks good. The Path also looks good. I actually just paused my Hulu subscription for one month and went back to Netflix for a month to catch up on Halt and Catch Fire. I’ll probably resume Hulu here very shortly as that was the only show on Netflix that had new episodes of shows I watch.

I'm really enjoying The Looming Towers. I watched episode 6 last night (bombing of the Cole) and episode 7 will be released tomorrow. I like how they intersperse real news clips with the story. Jeff Daniels should win an award. He's fantastic.

I've also started watching Homeland and it is very good. I think Hulu has five seasons.

I did a free trial, first time using Hulu.....i was tired of Netflix and couldn't find anything of interest to watch so had cancelled it last year (similar for Prime looooong time ago)

There are a few shows I wanted to finish that I saw on TV years back which is cool. none were on Netflix.

I did do the laptop thing and bookmarked a bunch of things I wanted to watch. having to do it w/ a remote is not easy.

I do hate when clicking to launch the app on Roku I always have to select my own name and go in 3-4 clicks each time just to get back to the series I am watching.

Else, I plan to keep it for a few months to finish a few series and watch a few movies I have bookmarked.

I just finished The Looming Tower. I was hesitant to watch it but am glad I did, it's pretty good. I kind of hope they don't make a Season 2 though, it felt right to wrap it all up on 9/11.
