Need to find a Used/Refurbished Macbook Air

Post by snowox » Thu Dec 14, 2017 5:59 pm

My duaghter in college has given me a million reasons that I dont understand why she needs/wants an Macbook Air for school. I dont know jack about Apple so I told her to hold off and see about buying a used or refurbished one as I have seen people here talk about buying that way. I am simply looking for reputable websites..place to look etc.. and perhaps what to look for to simply pass on to her. Thanks in advance!

Oh, we have already looked at two different Apple sites so looking outside of that scope I guess.

What is your budget?

11" or 13"?

Buy and sell gently used technology on Swappa's user-to-user marketplace.

I highly recommend using the actual Apple.com website to purchase your daughter a refurbished and warrantied for a year Mac Book Air from Apple. There is a discount of about $150 on the only one they have for sale right now. I gave my granddaughter a MacBook Air for her high school graduation and she's used it for her entire university career. She's never had a problem with it and it still works perfectly. She's an art major so she's been able to use it for her digital art classes also. Yes, they are a bit pricier than the windows pc but I have had no buyer's remorse and she hasn't lost any data or had her education disrupted because her computer died along with all her projects. I can usually solve my own technical glitches with my own Apple laptop or just call technical support and they will walk me through my problem. I have had Apple computers for three decades and won't look back. I even made my husband buy an Apple after he got burned by the so-called Microsoft tech support (fraudulent) company that tried to hijack his account and ordered Western Union money orders sent to them-they locked him out of his email. After purchasing an Apple we haven't had a single problem.

I've bought at least four refurbished Macbooks (including two Airs) from the apple.com site over the years. Never had a problem with any of them. The stock changes daily, so if you don't see a model/configuration you like today, try again tomorrow...

If she's shopping in the ~$900 price range I would suggest she consider the 12" Macbook instead. They start at $950 on the Apple refurbished site (which essentially like buying brand-new). They come with a 256GB SSD rather than 128GB, which is going to get cramped really quickly. Is is thinner and lighter than the 11" Air, and has a high resolution, 16:10 screen compared with the low resolution 16:9 screen on the 11" which is too cramped to do more than basic work on.

I'd recommend just getting a new 13" Macbook Air. Used would probably need the battery replaced (not do-it-yourself) before she graduates. She'll get her (or your) money's worth out of it.

I believe refurbs from the Apple site come with new batteries (typing this on my 13-inch mid-2011 refurb Air, although I admit I did replace the battery earlier this year)

Sorry, I'm wrong. iPhones and iPads include new batteries, laptops apparently do not. Nevertheless the battery on my Macbook Air has done quite well, but it would probably depend you you purchasing a recent model (the mid-2017 model right now, for instance, which is 15% off the price of new).

Bestbuy at times has coupons for 13" Macbook Airs, which put the prices for them around $700/$850 for the 128gb/256gb models. I bought a 2013 MBA for my wife a few years ago for I think $630, but that was when they accepted their 10% coupons on MBA purchases.

All she needs it for is to take notes and write papers, so there's no need to waste $800 on a Macbook Air. That's for games, youtube, instragram, tweeter, pornography and other modern nonsense; it ain't for academics. Explain to her that the $800 could be earning her interest in a mutual fund and preparing her for retirement. At 7% compounded, $800 grows to $12,000 in fourty years. Does she want to waste $12,000? Instead, you can get a perfectly good IBM laptop WITH A PRINTER TO PRINT HER TERM PAPERS ON for only $200 and I bet you could negotiate the seller down some if you tried. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-IBM-PC ... Sorry, don’t mean to be snide but is this a joke!? Did you read the description of this “great deal?” No better way to saddle a student with a productivity debt than to burden them with this. I’d rather have pen and paper.
Vintage IBM PC 5140 Convertible, Parallel-Serial Adapter, Power Cube, Printer, Carry Case

Used, old (1986). Powers up, back-lit display has some lines on it, not sure what's going on there. The second picture shows the screen right after it is turned on.

Lights flash on floppy drive as it looks for the boot disk, followed by two short beeps which according to documentation I found indicates a non-fatal error.

The printer is untested.

Carry case in nice condition. Includes ac adapter and plug.

Sorry, no manuals, disks or battery. The keyboard lifts up a little, not sure if it is normal, keyboard does work and was able to type letters.

There are some disks and manuals on the web. Please look at pictures and ask questions.

Due to the age of this vintage PC and the fact that I can not really test it thoroughly, it is being sold as is, no returns, for parts only.

Always surprised how people don’t get internet sarcasm...

Just get her a new one off B&H Photo. They have the best prices on Apple equipment. If the worst scenario is that she pays $900 for a MacBook vs $700 for an equivalent windows computer it’s really not the end of the world.

Pen and paper is even better. I heard a rumor that these modern computers come with a virus called "Tinder" that gives young people gonorrhea and herpes. My word what a world we live in. :annoyed

The base model Macbook I bought in 2007 still works perfectly today, 10 years later. Every single PC laptop I've owned turns into a slow piece of garbage by the end of year 2. I did eventually inherit a Macbook Air a couple of years ago that I now use, but the older computer still works fine. For me, the reliability was worth the cost since I hate computers and have no interest in doing regular maintenance on them; if I was a computer nerd who liked that kind of stuff, it might be different.

colleges have very good discounts to get these kids hooked on ecosystems early. Plus included tech support at the school. Compare prices at the school bookstore too

Actually I do agree with this if the intent is to get the AppleCare warranty. When I was in college they offered AppleCare that lasted a total of 4 years which is not available to anyone else. For what it’s worth my 2012 MacBook Air works just fine today. My wife’s 2013 HP laptop was replaced this year due to it being very slow.

Buy a brand new macbook. College with its constant deadlines to deliver projects (most of which require a computer to perform/create) is not the place to risk issues with flaky hardware or software issues. Be aware that for some programs (like STEM particularly in EE) a macbook can be a hindrance because some schools (I'm talking to you UT) require use a few critical apps that run right only on MS windows machines.

Spot on. Macbook is great for most people, but in engineering a reliable Windows laptop like Lenovo would be better.

Anyway, I'd also go with new from Adorama or BH Photo.

I would buy the macbook air from apple.com.

*Also note that there is ZERO need to buy a printer for college. Now days, every college has printers by the study rooms, libraries, and dorms, and some even include the printing as part of the tuition (print 800 pages per semester, B&W). Do not waste your time figuring out your own printer/printer ink and waste the valuable dorm room space.

Another vote for MacBook over Air. Much nicer computer. Great for a student or non-power user (not for CAD, video editing, etc).

Just about the best site I have found to buy pretty gently used Mac items.
