Save all this money, what do you splurge on?

Post by HardHitter » Fri Dec 08, 2017 7:44 pm

I know this goes against us living frugal however you also need to enjoy and live life a little. Would love to hear what you all "splurge" on.

For me, it is cars. Probably the worst thing to splurge on as a depreciating asset, but toying around with cars and enjoying them is great. The current toy is a 911 Turbo and hoping to get into a Lamborghini Murcielago someday.

OP,

The most precious thing in life after you have the money is time. You get to spend your time doing whatever you want. I probably go around the country and the world trying out all the nice coffee, tea, and food.

I enjoy a good work life balance and a new MacBook Pro every 3 years. I like to have a good & quick computer, latest technology, and with resale the outlay isn't too bad.

Our big splurge is the house we're building. Base price $450K, added $125K in upgrades. Will build a really nice pool and landscaping - plan on spending another $150K or so. I realize we won't recover the money we're sinking into the house but we don't plan on moving for the next decade.

I plan on selling my 2007 Porsche Cayman S - I've only driven it a couple of times in the last 6 months or so. I used to love cars. Now, I'm perfectly happy with my wife's old 2005 Acura TL (she bought a used 2011 Acura RDX).

It's not that we don't want to spend money (OK, maybe my wife still wants to save like crazy); it's just that there's not anything I really want to buy.

Hotels on bicycle tours so I don’t have to sleep on the ground.

I'm with KF, I love having my time to myself.

Having said that, some of my bucket list items are:

1 One year motorcycle/car trip around the USA

2 Around the world on cruise ships

3 Ride the Siberian Express

4 Try living on a cruise ship

I'm thinking of setting up a modest apartment back in the USA and also keeping one in The Philippines. I like comfort but not to the extent that it begins to control my life :sharebeer

I can only think of a couple:
  • We like to travel. Will cut back on this in a couple years when we plan to have children
  • I'm not much of a car person but I am a huge technology person, so next year a Tesla Model 3 (whenever my reservation gets to the front of the line)

Good seats to sporting events and concerts. New items that I usually recommend people buy used (most recently a nice stroller). My wife goes out for coffee a few times a week. I'm considering a second laptop that I can mostly leave at work so that I don't have to switch between the two VPNs I need to use--so annoying.

Financial independence allows udder complete autonomy. There are no longer demands on one's time, resources, or anything else from anyone or any entity.
There's time to learn and grow, as happens wonderfully on the forum. . . and, with wealth and freedom, one can be benevolent.

I *splurged* on a new vehicle this year. I didn't need it, but I wanted it. And I freakin' love it -- it makes me smile all the time!

Good financial decision? No. Do I regret it? Also no.

I’ve owned many cars and raced them at famous tracks in the northeast. Upon realizing I wasn’t getting any younger I sold everything and have focused on saving for retirement/kids’ college. Can’t wait until I hit my numbers and then can pick up a C7 or 911 and race again.

For us, it’s travel

My 4 and 7 year olds have been on more cruises than an average 80 year old.
We do at least a cruise a year, plus a fairly long exploration trip. Last year we did 2 weeks in California, this year we did Maine.
Looking into Alaska next year (Although the 4 year old keeps talking about drinking out of coconuts in Hawaii. I would consider my kids to be spoiled :). )

Splurging is very personal.
For us, we bought a really nice television ( is that still the term?) and a terrific sound system to go with it - all under the watchful eye of a close and knowledgeable friend who installed them. While we have had good televisions over the years, a complete, high-end system is something we have always wanted.

Almost bought a beautiful, used 2015 Mercedes for $31k - a really good deal as it still had a lot of the warranty left. But changed from splurge mode to frugal mode at the end. New tires on my 2007 Highlander seem to have scratched that splurge itch. For now.

We have other items on the list: new hockey components for me, new furniture for our two main rooms, a month long trip to Ireland in June, etc.

What we truly "splurge" on though is freedom. We always used to count and pinch pennies as we were accumulating wealth and the freedom to not do that anymore to the degree we once did is very enjoyable. 40% tips for servers at restaurants, not thinking twice ( or maybe only twice and not three times ) about buying a drill or a new set of pots and pans is really how we enjoy our money splurging. Paying for the adult kids' flights to Disney for our annual spring visit is a splurge which has all kinds of positive impact.

Cars for me also... have two that are just toys.
Our house is more than we 'need' and we're perfectly fine with it.
That's about it though. We're pretty simple and basic overall.

For us it is a couple of things

1) High-end spec gaming computers. I just purchased my husband a new one, and I'll get his old one. We keep them around 8 years each, but we spend at least a couple of hours a day during the week and a bit more on the weekend.

2) Cars - we both have late model cars. I think this will become less of a splurge for us in the next few years now that my husband works for a major automaker and the perks that come with that.

As our income has grown over the past 3-4 years, we've seen a lot of our discretionary income move to things that save us time to do the things we want to do (e.g. paying the extra few dollars to have groceries delivered, during busy times such as the holiday season we splurge on a personal chef service to bring us meals).

We did a major upgraded cruise last month, 12k for us and our two kids.

Our game room has my pinball machine and billiards table.

Ongoing spending is private music lessons, $75 a week for me and the kids. I'll eventually buy myself a much pricier violin than what I have. Though I think the music lessons have a great intrinsic value.

as the breadwinner in my family.. i've bought peace of mind, that if i kicked the bucket, my family would be financially taken care of.

But while i'm still here, i splurge on keeping my boat running, so i can go fishing. (the boat and its motors are about twice as old as i am).

Interesting to read everyone’s thoughts.....

For me it’s a wonderful Pro-summer Espresso machine and grinder. Few things bring me as much pleasure as a well pulled shot and the enjoyment of a morning Americano .

https://www.wholelattelove.com/expobar- ... ortaholder

As an aside, I find it amazing that most commercial coffee shops have such expensive equipment but baristas that have no clue what a good shot of Espresso tastes like. Finding a great barista, reading a good book and sipping my Americano counts as another splurge.

And then there is the joy of finding a beautiful piece of wood—it’s amazing what nature provides when you look.

For a brief year where I had extra money I bought 3 framed original artwork from working artists in my locale. They were giclee prints so to me look like original art, not that flat dull poster stuff. My rationale: I am not an artist, I love the art created by others, I think artists are not rewarded well in our current society so it was partly to enjoy the art myself while it is hanging on my walls and partly to help support working artists.

1) I am not an espresso drinker. I prefer cold-brew and Aeropress.

2) My next coffee upgrade is probably home roasting of coffee bean.

traveling and dining - i once spent over 20K in a summer, don't regret it at all.

Monday through Thursday I pretty much spend $0 (coffee, breakfast, lunch all at home) and everyone at the office makes fun of me. I'm also 32, have traveled to most of my "bucket list" already, with a 6 figure net worth and no debt despite making terrible money in a HCOL area until recently - i learned to live off 30-35K a year, now my "Extra" money goes to high yield savings / index funds

I look forward to early retirement while driving a Honda and not ordering lunch every day (I honestly don't even know how/why people spend so much on what ends up looking gross and unhealthy by the time it's delivered).

I'm sort of a homebody that also loves to travel - so basically I go out 1/2x a week for dinner/drinks maximum. When I do travel, I stay in nice hostels (yes, they exist and cut trip cost in half) and don't even think about what I spend once I'm there - enjoy the trip(s).

that's pretty much it.
