Thanks. I went to Target and picked up a few. A little surprised no one mentioned it yet.

Make sure to not purchase these gift cards with other gift cards. Target was cracking down on this activity by draining both the purchased and the purchasing gift card with no refunds when this deal was offered last year due to fraudulent activity.

I saw the DoctorOfCredit post about this, and there were TV ads for the last few days. I've been accumulating a Target shopping list for the past week so I could go in today to get all of that plus my sister's family Christmas gift card and save 10% on the gift card. I'm now stocked up on toiletries, cleaning supplies, and the like so I don't have to go to Target closer to Christmas time just to get some shampoo or other everyday item when the Christmas rush is on. And I have the gift card for the "annual exchanging of the gift cards", as my sister and I call it.

Technically, Discover could disallow the rewards points if you just bought gift cards and they found out about it. Practically speaking, they only go to such extremes for the people who go overboard on such deals.

Nerdwallet indicates that Discover will honor the rewards as long as you buy it at Target or Target.com. I have not read the fine print myself, though!

There is nothing in the Discover terms for quarterly cashback bonus that prohibits earning 5% on gift cards. Max spend for the quarterly bonus is $1500, so there is a limit to going overboard.

Bought $2000 on 2 Discover Its, enough to cover all estimated Target spend for the next year. Now to buy a year's worth of personal care and household stuff using the 20% off coupon.

FYI, the max discount was advertised as $30 ($300 in gift cards) per household. You might have found a loophole and nothing will come of it. But keep in mind that Target could also do something about the excess purchase per Discover It card (about the only way they could centrally define "household" from a technical perspective) and still be within their terms for the offer. They could for example cancel the excess gift cards or lower the balances to reflect the max $30 discount.

So you might want to keep a close eye on the balances of those cards.
