iPad - Best Bang for your Buck

Post by fishmonger » Mon Nov 27, 2017 9:22 am

I'm sure this has been answered before, but I couldn't find a consistent answer when searching old threads. DW and I are going to get two iPads for our kids as their big Christmas present, who are 8 and 6. They will be used to play educational games, and maybe occasionally stream movies/shows online.

The options from any of the big box retailers or Amazon are overwhelming - what is the best model/size to get? Both in terms of price and capabilities We have no Apple products, wife and I both have Samsung phones and a Dell laptop

I would go with the 2017 iPad 32GB Wifi model for kids. They have been available for $249-269 on sale recently.

I would consider getting a 7” (iPad mini) instead of the 10” size. It fits young kids hands better, IMO. Also make sure you get the right case for it - searching for shockproof, kids, or rugged case should get you some options.

Not an iPad, but I would look at this anyway. Amazon and several retailers have the Fire 7 and Fire HD 8 Kids Editions on sale for $70 and $90 dollars respectively today. You can get a 2 pack of either and save $10, for $130 or $170 total. Comes with a one year subscription to a lot of Amazon content, case, and 2 year no questions warranty. I would get an additional screen protector of some kind and maybe an SD card if you want to load movies or other additional content on it yourself. Huge value for that price, and good warranty considering how rough kids can be on things.

Check out craigslist. I bought iPad Air - the good thing is you will get screen protector and case with it.
Yes there is risk - what if its broken or goes bad quickly after purchase.
So far with my experience , three iPads and 2 Macbook pro and 6 years of use. I did not have any problems at all and always paid top of the line little less than 50%.
Key is to have patience.

Since you are an Android family now, take a look at the Samsung Galaxy S2 8” with 32GB on sale today on Amazon for $249.

I would take into consideration what their schools use.

Thanks all. Their school uses iPads, not sure of the model. We've decided to go with the 32 GB WiFi version

Try them out before you buy. Honestly, iPad is a quality device, I use mine 3-4 hours a day and take it exclusively when traveling. One downside is, the 10.5” might be too breakable, I’ve broken my screen twice in 6 months.

Good choice, that's what I would get for my kids too, if they weren't getting hand me down devices. Don't forget a case -- for kids, I would buy a cheap case from Amazon rather than the expensive Apple case. I bought this one for my daughter's iPad Air 2, and it's surprisingly nice: https://www.amazon.com/Fintie-iPad-Case ... Bcase&th=1

Just bought two of the iPads for $249 from Target. Have been very happy with the one I have, it lasts a long time and with a Bluetooth keyboard has largely replaced my desktop.

I like the iPad mini for kids, but my kids school requires the regular iPad. I’ve been waiting for a deal on the 128 gb model. The 32 gb model doesn’t offer much space in my opinion once you have the operating system factored in.

Get the best model with the most memory that you can afford. 32 gb isn’t very much. Apps will fill up before you know it. It’s a quality piece of tech that will last years. Worth a little extra IMO
