Any BLACK FRIDAY deals for Bogleheads?

Post by Ron Scott » Fri Nov 24, 2017 10:01 am

Just scored a few Wemo wall sockets and some other holiday goodies on the obvious online store. Fingers itchy...

Also saw Vanguard has a sale on new accounts: VTSAX at 0.01%* for 2018!

Anything else of interest?

I bought my wife a Samsung Chromebook Plus for $100 off ($349). I've had one for a few months and she's been oogling it.

Plugged my first one into a floor lamp connected to a switched outlet with dual wall switches. Took me half an hour to realize I was a dunce on that one... Love 'em though.

I've never bought anything on Black Friday (or Cyber Monday). Perhaps I am missing out on something, but most likely I'm better off without getting involved in the whole circus.

The best way to save money or a sale is not to go to the store :D

However, if Vanguard had a "Black Friday" sale I would be interested.
Introductory specials:
Purchases made today:
Half off expense ratios for the first 3 years for new customers.
Customer appreciation sale:
Purchases made today.
Half off expense ratios for the next 5 years for existing accounts in good standing.
Boglehead members only: 50% off a 3 year premium level Morningstar subscription.

Happy Black Friday everyone.

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't.
Here is my approach.
1. If I think I want an item I add it to my Amazon wish list. Some items have been sitting there for years.
2. If there is something that I might want now from my list, I check the Black Friday deals. Good, I buy. Not so good, I might or might not.

For example, I had a LamsonSharp turner on my Amazon list for 2+ years. Black Friday dropped the price at Lamson to $21. So, I went all in. https://lamsonproducts.com/collections/ ... 7780482072

Check out the website www.camelcamelcamel.com to track pricing on Amazon products. It creates a chart over time showing the fluctuations in price and you can set it to alert you via email when it drops to a price of your choice. Pretty neat.

I bought an Amazon "Dot" for $29.99 and added the offer of a TP-Link Smart Plug for $5.00.

The new Dot will go in our sunroom, and will be connected to an Onkyo receiver and real speakers, so the music should sound pretty good. A Dot does have a speaker built in, but for music the speaker is not very good at all, very thin, tinny sounding.

Kobo Auro ereader $89 plus tax - free shipping. Not a great deal - but not a bad deal.

My beloved sony ereader is dying a slow death. And I'm not keen on the Amazon ecosystem - plus the extra fee to take the adds off.

If I can get in the parking lot I might stop at Barnes & Noble later. They sent an extra coupon. They regularly send coupons. But I like to get games and puzzles at this time of the year.

Definitely wants - not needs. Justification - helping the economy.

The one time I bought electronics on Black Friday I got burned. Amazon shipped me routers that were v1 and the manufacturer was already building v4. Having worked for an electronics company, one thing I know is you want to avoid v1 and v2 if you can. These usually have the early design or component defects and the customer is the quality assurance organization.

I looked at getting one of those for my wife for Christmas, but I opted for an Asus 302 for $70 off ($429) at Newegg instead.

We both have 3 y/o Asus Chromebooks now, but the keyboard on mine now has a few inoperable keys. I seldom use it (almost exclusively for travel) and was looking for a replacement. I really liked the Asus 302 but the price was holding me back. Then it dawned on me to give one to DW and try to talk her into giving me her older Chromebook (which she uses exclusively) afterward. A bit of a self-serving gift perhaps, but I hope it will be a win/win.

I didn’t buy a single thing on Black Friday, as usual, but both of my daughters were shopping online at multiple websites, it’s definitely better than in person, they can cover many stores. It was race to the deadline. I hope they did get something nice. I did hear some complaints that their carts were emptied for some reasons.

Splurged with a Neato Botvac Connected robot vacuum cleaner... With full approval from the government (dear wife!)... At $450, this seemed like a pretty good deal. Never used such a thing, we'll see how it performs.

The local grocery store (Central Market for those in the seattle area) has 25% off gift cards up to $400 on sale today. Since I shop there anyway why not get $100 in free groceries.

A bit of a self-serving gift perhaps, but I hope it will be a win/win.
you may want to return the Newegg one. Amazon is selling the Asus 302 CB even cheaper today ($386) so you can save another $40.

23andme is offering ancestry plus health reports for 50% (normally $199 for both, now $99) as long as you buy 2 kits otherwise just $70 off for one kit:
