Costco for tires and car insurance?
Costco for tires and car insurance?
Hi Bogleheads -
I just bought a slightly used 2017 Ford Escape, and I'm thinking that I should get a set of winter tires for it. Winters here can be kinda nasty; last one definitely was. I'm inclined to get the tires from Costco... I'm just wondering if anyone out there has experience with buying tires from them. How did it go? And do they make it easy to swap out winter tires and regular tires in the winter & spring?
Coincidentally, the other day I got a flyer from them touting their car insurance. At some point soon I'll probably call them to check prices, but I need to ask the same question I asked about tires -- does anyone have experience with Costco's auto insurance? Care to share your experience?
Thanks in advance....

Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
I can't speak to changing from winter to spring but I can say we have gotten our last few sets of tires via costco and have had no problems. Rotations and hazard included. Service has always been great.
We shopped around our home and auto insurance and had switched to Ameriprise through costco a couple of years ago and saved a couple hundred dollars annually.
We had to make our first claim last winter when DW decided to take on a snow bank in her car. Claim service was easy, no questions or issues.

Just bought a set of Bridgestone AT KO2 for my Toyota Tundra truck.
Also a set of Bridgestone Duratrac's for my son's truck.
Costco prices were the lowest, service was excellent as always. They can also order what is not in stock. We go to them for tires and batteries.

Not as effortless as Les Schwab but less chaotic. Limited selection but they're name brands unlike Schwab. I've had to go to Discount Tire for Michelin Super Sports and Arctic X-Ice Xi2 (I think) -- they were very competitive, price-wise. Looks like they have one in Bend. Get rims, of course -- we've always just used cheap black steel multifits for the traction tires. Plus, then you can bolt them on yourself when that first unexpected snow shows up in the forecast. Lost track of how many times I've done that in the dark late at night with just the cheap breakdown jack (!). Spouse plans a little better, of course.

If you have it in your area, I think America's Tire (sometimes goes by the name Discount Tire) is better than Costco. Although Costco is good too.

Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
I recently got quotes from several insurance companies for auto, home and umbrella. Ameriprise (Costco) was more expensive than State Farm and Geico on all 3. On auto it was cheaper than State Farm but more than Geico.catdude wrote: ↑Thu Nov 09, 2017 11:30 pm Hi Bogleheads -

I have bought tires from Costco. They have quality tires at a good price, especially if you catch sales. However, it is a pain to take the car in for tire rotation unless you enjoy browsing the store for a few hours.
Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
Costco is great for buying tires but, at least in my area, not great for servicing them -- limited appointment slots, lots of waiting. In my experience, if you take a Costco quote to a full-service tire shop, e.g., Firestone, Goodyear, they can usually match the price on the tires, and it's a lot easier/more convenient to get your free lifetime rotations and tire repair service done there.
Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
Costco fine for tires but not for insurance. Ameriprise in my area not even in ball park figure. If Costco too far or always busy for tire servicing, discount tires are fine too. ( Tire Discounters)
Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
Heads up --- If you are a member of Sam's Club, I think tomorrow, Veteran's day, they're running a special where it's like up to $80 off four new tires and then the install ($60 or so) is free. When I got my tires rotated at Sam's yesterday, he was telling the gal in front of me that you could pay for the tires on Saturday and get the deal, and then have them installed on Sunday or Monday as they were expecting it to be a mad house.
I think Costco runs a similar promotion once or twice a year where install is free, as well as, the buy 4 tires, get $$$ rebate.
Personally, I think Sam's better for tires as A) more locations B) price about the same as Costco C) more selection/brands for my wheels, D) usually not as crazy as Costco E) can make appointments.

Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
When I lived in Louisville, I bought tires from Costco. I had a problem with one that made a "thrumming" noise at highway speed, and Costco was not equipped to handle such a problem. I tried on several occasions to have them drive it, and they would not do so. They would inspect, everything "looked" OK, and that was that. Their claim was that the noise must be coming from the car
After moving to Florida, the tire lost a chunk of rubber on the side about the size of my thumb and about 1/4 inch deep. The Costco in Jacksonville took a look, said it was still within spec, and would not further address the issue. I took the car to a local repair shop who changed it out. The noise was gone, and their opinion was that a manufacturing defect was responsible for the noise and the missing chunk. They were able to arrange for a partial warranty coverage from the manufacturer.
I won't be returning to Costco for tires. They can sell 'em cheap, but don't support you afterwards.

Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
I have been buying tires from Costco for about 7 years and have had no problems. Their prices are competitive and if you go at off times the wait is usually around 45 minutes which I can easily kill in the store. I’ve never been a fan of the way Discount Tire tries to upsell the customer and the waits there can be quite long. Ameriprise (Costco) auto insurance is quite competitive on price in the Denver metro area. We’ve been with them for 7 or 8 years and have had no issues. We also have our homeowners through them. However if I was looking at just auto I would probably start with Geico. They are typically the lowest price.

Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
Bought winter tires at Costco during one of their annual $80 off promotion several years ago and get them swapped in and out each year also at Costco. No major problems. Only issue is long lines since they are the lowest cost option in the area with a need to make reservations several days in advance and a wait time of about 1 hour, but most people just do their costco shopping while waiting.
Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
I only buy tires at Costco, and actually just ordered a replacement set of winters this morning. Yesterday through next Thursday they're running a promotion where, in addition to the $70 off 4 Bridgestones (an almost continuous discount that oscillates between Bridgestone and Michelin), installation is a penny per tire, for a total savings of $130 off their regular prices. My set of Blizzak WS80s is $701 including tax.
In the spring when I go back to my Pilot Super Sports (also bought there), they just charge me $20 for the swap.
Looks like a set of WS80s for your Escape (took a wild guess and went with the SE trim level) should cost around $608 plus tax during this promotion. I definitely recommend getting a second set of wheels, as was mentioned upthread.

Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
DD bought a set of tires at Costco. One of the tires failed due to a road hazard. Costco would replace it for a small charge under the warranty. However, they had discontinued that tire and had to substitute another equivalent tire. This would have caused her to have two different tires on the same axle, which is not safe. So, Costco replaced the other tire on that axle for free. So, for a small charge (about $20), she got two new tires.TeamArgo wrote: ↑Fri Nov 10, 2017 7:21 am When I lived in Louisville, I bought tires from Costco. Our experience is excellent for Costco tires - and almost always our preferred place to get tires.

A "thrumming" you say? Have you checked for Don Knotts (The Incredible Mr. Limpet) in one of your tires?

Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
Hi, OP here. Thanks y'all for your feedback, I'm much obliged. I'm inclined to go with Costco for the tires (but not the insurance). I've done a bit of price-checking and they seem to be quite a bit less expensive than Discount Tire.
And thanks Sandtrap for the kind words about my avatar! That's not my cat in the picture... I just downloaded it from the web. Although my cats know how to relax too....
I bought the Escape from my niece. It's the Titanium version... she got it with all the bells & whistles. It's probably just as well that she bought it new, rather than me, because I'm too much of a Boglehead to buy a new car fully loaded.

Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
Costco seems to alternate months between $70 off Bridgestones and $70 off Michelins, sometimes with free install, sometimes not. Right now it is Bridgestones.
Selection seems to be limited, but even at dedicated tire shops, you often have to order in if you want a particular tire, because it's only practical to stock a limited selection.
Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
Costco has a big discount on Bridgestone right now: I think free install and $70 off. Makes Blizzaks affordable (arguably best snow tire).

Discount Tire usually matches. Costco is very good. It's just that Discount Tire is usually better when it comes to customer service.

Try walmart as well.I replace the tires on outback recently. I did check a lot of sites then. I don't remember all the details but I paid around 350$ at walmart. I am pretty happy with it.

While waiting for tires to be installed at Costco, it is nice to get a bargain pizza or hot dog and/or get some of the free samples.
Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
Yes for tires but they have never been competitive for car insurance for my family.

Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
After reading this thread maybe I should shop around for car insurance.
We have Ameriprise through Costco. For a long time. The reason I have not looked around is because the couple times we had to use the Ameriprise insurance, hail damage and one parking lot fender bender, we had excellent service. One phone call and they pretty much handled it and done. I did not have to plead or go to excess lengths to have things covered.
We have a Honda CRV 2004 and a 2005 Honda Element and pay $1030 a year for full coverage.
Is that a lot?

Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
First the disclaimer: I am a Costco member, former employee, and stockholder...but I'm not biased.
I always buy my tires at Costco and have done so since 2006. Just wait for the seasonal $70 coupon on Michelin or Bridgestone tires. I've had three warranty replacements: I hit a curb and put a gash on sidewall (twice) and ran over some glass. In every case the tires didn't lose any air pressure but Costco determined they where unsafe and replaced them under warranty. I always purchase the Michelin tires and can get about 80k to 90k miles from them but this may have more to do the the type of car I drive (2006 Civic) and type of driving, all highway miles.
Costco is not the fastest place to get your tires replaced but they stand by their products and have a no hassle warranty. Plus they rotate your tires free every 6,000 miles and provide nitrogen tire inflation. You can read about the benefits of nitrogen tire inflation here: http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/ho ... 4/4302788/
I had my autos insured with 21st century for over 10 years and recent price increases made me look at Costco/Ameriprise. I was paying $921 with 21st century every 6 months then switched to Ameriprise and was pleasantly surprised my premium decreased to $481. A significant savings in my book. I don't know how their claim service is but I think the cost savings definitely merits a quote.

Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
Same. I used to go to Discount Tire but not sure if it's just the one by my house, but the last couple of times that I had a nail in a tire, they said that I needed a new tire... which led to the recommendation to replace in pairs. I declined both times and went to another Discount Tire further away and they patched it both times! Agreed... their wait can also be pretty long too.
With that said, now I just get tires from Costco. I really like their prices but do try to go during off hours otherwise the wait can be pretty long. I can't really comment on the insurance. Every time that I called them or any other company, their quotes have been more than what I currently have with State Farm. I even have a supposed discounted rate with MetLife through my work but they were still higher.
Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
I used to get tires from Walmart but now they are getting busy and the service is getting worse. I now get tires from BJs, which provides much better service. There are $70 discounts similar to Costco.

I like Costco for tires, not only because their prices are good but also because they do mounting, balancing, torquing lug nuts, etc. correctly. But wait until the brand you want is on sale because they will be at least once per month.
I made the mistake of buying my latest set of tires from a tire shop chain because they are more conveniently located and willing to match Costco pricing. I'm not nearly as happy with the quality of work. I'll be back at Costco for my next set.

I have been very happy using Tirerack.com to buy tires and NTB to install and service them. Tirerack has a much better selection, good reviews, and some very good prices as well. They ship them to a local place for installation. I found that the tires arrived the next day and I could get them installed quickly.

I haven't checked their insurance quotes, but we use them for tires and have been happy. The free rotations, patching, etc. make it even better and we don't struggle to get an appointment.
Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
+1. For many years, I did not buy into the "premium" nature of Michelin tires and the hokey "so much is riding on your tires" scare tactics (that was them, right?) -- I would buy anything but Michelins. I bought tires for longevity and that's never been the Michelin strong suit in our household.FrugalInvestor wrote: ↑Sat Nov 11, 2017 1:41 pm I've always been more than happy with Michelin tires.
So I'm older now and I buy tires for other reasons (balance of wet grip, dry grip, noise, tread life -- probably in that order) and pretty much only buy Michelin now. I know all tires and all vehicles are different, and the various combinations are even more different, but I've "liked" Michelins better on all of our family's very diverse vehicles, even when I was kinda biased against them as a brand. So I don't think I was wanting to believe that they were better. They are not the cheapest. But even for the "a car is to get you from point A to point B" set (we really need an acronym for that on BH), tires should be a big deal.

We needed two new tires on our wonderful 1998 Camry. My wife took care of it completely and got two Michelin tires at Costco in September. We will probably need two more in 1-2 years - and I expect two more Michelins.daveydoo wrote: ↑Sat Nov 11, 2017 4:29 pm+1. OP here again. Thanks again to everyone for sharing your experiences. I think I'll wait till next month and see if Costco does a sale on Michelins. I've got a set of Michelins for my 2007 Camry, which I'm in the process of selling. They've been good tires, so I feel inclined to get another set for the Ford Escape.

Does Costco have the ability to perform alignments? I don’t see an alignment rack at ours and can’t imagine why one would buy tires without getting an alignment.
Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?

But I disagree with your premise. Most modern vehicles hold their alignments very well, unless you make frequent excursions into gigantic potholes. I can't imagine spending $60+ for an unnecessary service.
The only alignment I've needed in the last 20 years was when I replaced the tie rods on a vehicle. How do I know that I haven't needed others? Because my tires wear evenly. If they aren't wearing evenly, yes, an alignment or some sort of repair is needed.
Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
The sale of $70 off the regular price of a set of 4 tires occurs regularly. However, there is currently an additional sale of 1 cent installation per tire. This special occurs much less often. If you want tires now, I would suggest taking advantage of that double special while it is still available. The regular installation cost is $15 per tire, so that is an additional $59.96 off the regular price.catdude wrote: ↑Sun Nov 12, 2017 2:16 am OP here again. They do not perform alignments. They also have good prices on good batteries, but they do not install them. I believe that by limiting the services they provide, they can keep costs down, and thus keep prices down. OK, thanks sport for the tip, I think I'll take advantage of that offer.sport wrote: ↑Sun Nov 12, 2017 10:19 amThe sale of $70 off the regular price of a set of 4 tires occurs regularly.

All generalizations are false, including this one.

Well... I'm sure they have done plenty of market research on the matter of co-locating the tire shop with the rest of the store...
Thank God for Wall Street Bets.

Re: Costco for tires and car insurance?
That eats up about 10 minutes of the 2-3 hour wait typical at my Costco.dm200 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 11, 2017 8:19 amWhile waiting for tires to be installed at Costco, it is nice to get a bargain pizza or hot dog and/or get some of the free samples.
I've resorted to using vacation hours for getting and servicing my Costco tires. The appointment times available are only during work hours. However, last time I walked in during a rain storm and the entire tire department was empty. They still take about an hour.

If I'm reading the current flyer correctly, the current sale is for Bridgestones ($70 off set of 4, 1 cent installation), ending 11/16.sport wrote: ↑Sun Nov 12, 2017 10:35 amThe sale goes through 11/16.catdude wrote: ↑Sun Nov 12, 2017 10:28 amOK, thanks sport for the tip, I think I'll take advantage of that offer.sport wrote: ↑Sun Nov 12, 2017 10:19 amThe sale of $70 off the regular price of a set of 4 tires occurs regularly. The next sale is Michelins (same $70 off, 1 cent installation), running 11/17 - 11/22.

I checked the flyer.
