Cheap low speed unlimited data

Post by inbox788 » Tue Oct 31, 2017 3:43 pm

What's the cheapest unlimited low speed data plan out there? My main usage will be browsing, email, texting/messaging, maps, and downloading apps/content. If it can stream a radio station or music, all the better.

Cricket Wireless has a $30 plan with 1GB of High speed data and "speeds reduced after allowance is used". If you have 5 lines, it goes down to $20/month. https://www.cricketwireless.com/cell-phone-plans

Any plans around $10 with unlimited data or less than $20 stand alone?

Free public wi-fi is the only thing I'm aware of.

Note that many carriers' "low speed" is around 256kpbs. Which is really super duper slow for modern web browsing. Music could conceivably work, video might not work at all. Downloads will feel like they'll never finish.

What you want there is no market for. Think of it this way—if you don’t need high speed data then you don’t need much data so you can get a low gb/plan or if you need high speed data you probably use a lot of data and therefore need a high gb plan.

You should look into GoogleFi which charges $0.01/mb + $20 for talk/text. That way you only pay for what you use.

One option is Tello Mobile.

500mb of 4G LTE and no minutes/text for $9 per month.

Data is throttled to 64kbps after 500MB is gone.

"Enjoy 4G LTE: unlimited data usage, speed throttled down to 64kbps once you use up your plan's data amount."

Pandora, at least, can stream at 64KBPS.

Keep in mind that if you do want to stream music, 1 gb won't last long, and you probably won't be able to keep up streaming with reduced speed. If that's important to you, one option to consider is T-Mobile prepaid for $45 a month, which has 4gb of data but most music streaming services (like Spotify and Pandora) don't count against your data.

They have an even lower tier 200mb for $7/month. The extra high speed isn't going to be useful and quickly consumed. No video is contemplated. I'll have to see if 64kbps will work well enough; I was hoping for 256kbps range.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Have you looked at providers like Freedom Pop? They will set you up with some free data, and the option to buy more after you exhaust that amount. If you have a dual-sim phone, you could run data-only on one sim and cheap voice/text on the other.

If you have a small business as a sole proprietor, Teltik has 2GB of high speed data, then low speed data at 128k with unlimited talk and text for $23.50, including taxes. They resell T-Mobile business plans. They require some evidence of the business, such as a business card, tax ID, assumed name certificate, or business license.

At 1 GB/month, it is going to cost the same as cricket. Unlimited is going to be ~50/month. There are a couple of people offering 5gb of data for 35 bucks.

Interesting option. It does seem like a bit of a gray area and sooner or later 3G service will get discontinued. My cursory scan has rumors as early as next year or two to as far as 2021. I had a low cost data device on wi-max before that was dismantled.

Also, you might still be able to get the Walmart T-mobile $30 5gb plan. It's a good amount of high speed data, but a few hours of video will consume it.

My daughter is our data killer. I may use a gig or so. Daughter uses the rest. We are usually under 10 gigs in a normal month. If we are traveling it will exceed 20.

Doesn’t seem like pandora is bad. But my daughter uses YouTube music which kills the data.

I think T-Mobile will exclude many music providers from your cap, but that also means the music quality is slightly degraded (which is a good tradeoff IMHO.)
