Heard a great quote this morning:

"Amazon Key is the only delivery service where the items leave your house."

Put unlock access to everyone's front door in a database online? What could go wrong? *cough* Equifax? *cough*

while they are at it, they can send the cleaners to clean the house, pet care specialists to groom the pet (ofcourse before house cleaning) and inventory the pantry and order more stuff

They'll need to order more for the pantry after cooking dinner, of course.

And don't let them forget to draw the bath before leaving ("sprinkling rose petals, extra").

All sorts of possibilities here.

Actually, in our neighborhood, at least one dry cleaner has a delivery service that can arrange this, with the clothing to be hung in a specific closet, or on a special rack in a locked garage (the lesser of evils!), and then take the waiting outbound laundry/dry cleaning.
I can see the garage service, but "in the house"?

I'm not sure I would want to be a driver who could be accused of a variety of things, guilty or innocent.

They'll also send a drone out to see if your roof or other outside structures needs repair. (That's something they're actually considering.)

Is this intended to be a replacement for Amazon Locker?

Privacy issues aside, I'm doubtful many customers will be eager to shell out $250 for the smart locks and cameras necessary to make this service possible.

I don't know about that. Video doorbells, always-listening speakers, and $500+ smartphones all seem to sell pretty well. I bet the same folks that buy into these other toys could easily be swayed to spend $250 on another novelty.

Exactly. When these are marketed positively (increases convenience!) and using fear (people could steal your stuff when it sits on the steps after delivery!) people eat it up

Amazon Dash Buttons are a thing, after all. This is just the next logical step

I would be more concerned about delivery people getting access to my home as opposed to the risk of getting my stuff stolen. If I was going to order something very expensive online, I would just have it delivered to a local UPS office so that I can get it when I'm available to do so.

It says in the article that this service isn't recommended for people who have pets.

Me too. But a lot of people, for reasons incomprehensible to me, are not at all concerned about entry to their house by delivery or service people. But, overall people are not terribly rational. A prime example that came up last week over the dinner table: we live in a very safe residential neighborhood, and yet several of my wife's coworkers are horrified that she walks to work in the dark, a total of 4 blocks!

Given the track record of the carriers in my area, they'd probably leave it in the wrong house.

Not to be fussy, but it says: "Can I receive in-home delivery if I have a pet?
We do not recommend using in-home delivery if your pet can access the front door on delivery day." A picture shows a professional dog walker walking three dogs, and below it says: "No more hiding keys under the mat
Amazon Key lets you grant access to the people you trust. Schedule permanent access for your family members or give temporary access to recurring visitors like dog walkers, house cleaners, or out-of-town guests. You’ll be notified any time your guest locks or unlocks your door.

Plus, Amazon Key for professional service providers
In the coming months, Amazon Key will provide customers with a convenient way to provide unattended access to professional service providers. This includes services from home cleaning experts Merry Maids and pet sitters and dog walkers from Rover.com, as well as over 1,200 services from Amazon Home Services."

I myself would be uncomfortable with this. :)

I'd do it. I'm really not that obsessed with narratives about theft from people who already have access to your house vs strangers jimmying the locks or breaking a window to get in. Really there's not that much to steal in my place anyway and I depend on my nosy neighbors to make sure no one walks off with the big screen tv.

OTOH, I have had deliveries stolen from the porch. But even then I'm not that worried about that problem either.

I'm sure there's some subset of people who this appeals to. BTW, the $250 includes a smart lock and cloud cam. So if you were interested in both of those anyway the extra cost is probably nominal.

I'm not buying some $250 special lock so they can break into the house. Give it for me free then I might just use the service.

I wonder though if it would void a brokerage agreement if a password was stolen from the house (say, from a desk drawer) or from an improperly secured computer. It's an improbable case -- unless the homeowner was pretty sloppy -- but it's interesting to think about.

Also, sometimes ISPs deliver routers with the SSID and password printed on a sticker on the bottom. I'd bet some people are too lazy to change the password.

I've seen this movie before.

Delivery guy causes electronic static so the camera doesn't see that he's gone inside the house completely.

He plants a hidden camera in the bathroom since he's already looked up the owner's picture on Facebook and likes what he sees.

Plenty more movies like that one.

I am not responsible for packages stolen outside that they leave so I am certainly not going to have someone I don't know enter my home when I am not there.

That being said, I think people that live in communities (condos, townhouses, etc.) with common mail areas need to step up and devise something better for packages to be left. Whether it is installing cameras to monitor the area or a locked room where only the residents have access. The delivery companies and Amazon spread the cost of everything stolen so everyone winds up paying.

Just the beginning of the Amazon plot to spy on everyone in order to sell more stuff.
Alexa is every home, then physical access with Amazon Key to scout the home to see what else they can sell to you.

Packages have a way of walking away from MN Y doorstep, even with a security camera. Parts of the country would definitely benefit from this. I'd prefer to give access to some sort of look locker on my property though.

Most of the larger apartment building / town homes / condos have large package mailboxes that USPS can deliver larger packages to, they then place the key to this in your normal USPS box...

For the life of me I see little value and huge risk to the end consumer with this.

Many Americans have firearms. You wake up one morning to the sound of someone walking in your house, forgetting you had a scheduled Amazon delivery....and you start blasting away.

The UPS, Fedex, and USPS personnel show up at your door IN UNIFORM and in a WELL MARKED vehicles.

Amazon deliveries that do not use the postal services above show up in unmarked vehicles and generally, the people are not professionally dressed. Personally, i do not even want them coming to my door much less into my house.

I would hope you could install the fancy amazon electronic lock and camera on a storage shed or similar and have Amazon deliver there, with this service, instead of the front door.

I don't see that in Chicago much. The highrises do have doormen so it is moot there. They do have Amazon lockers at some public locations. In my complex of about 50 units, we have a mail area. It is technically only accessible to residents and guests. But people buzz in delivery people or workmen or whatever all the time. Though I haven't had anything stolen, I know other residents have.

We have a smart lock (not one of the ones that is compatible with this service right now but a very similar model) on our condo's front door. It's convenient so I don't have to grab my keys out, can open the door with an app, etc.

We also uses it for a dog walking service when I'm out of town (currently work in a city different than our condo for a few months) and my SO has a particularly long shift at work. Made them their own code, they can come in, grab the pup, walk him, and put the dog back. We have a connected hub that logs whenever the codes are used, so we know that they entered twice (at say 305p and 340p).

Dog walking service would either need a code or a spare key regardless, and I figure a revokable code is probably safer.

That said, I don't know how I'd feel about giving delivery people access to my home as well. With the set up camera, I don't see a big issue with it. We'll see if/when Amazon comes to our metropolitan area. We live in a very hot region, so it may make sense for certain deliveries.

You are being watched.
The government Amazon has a secret system:
A machine that spies on you every hour of every day
I know because I built it
I designed the machine to detect acts of terror,
But it sees everything
Violent crimes involving ordinary people, people like you.
Crimes the government Amazon considered irrelevant.
They wouldn’t act, so I decided I would.
But I needed a partner, someone with the skills to intervene.

I think the distinction is you hired the dog walker. You know who they are. Amazon will be hiring the delivery person and you will have no clue who they are.

I wouldn't use this service. I'll take the 4th Amendment over any convenience.

This puts both your digital and physical privacy at risk should there be a data breach/hack at Amazon or should an employee do sneak around.

Additionally, Amazon works closely with the intelligence & defense agencies as yet another avenue where you can be subjected to warrant-less surveillance.
