Honest Contractor Reviews

Post by ralph124cf » Tue Oct 17, 2017 12:43 pm

I am trying to get honest reviews about a paving contractor. There are a number of reviews from different sources on the web, but every one uses perfect grammar and spelling. And every one gives the contractor five stars. This is not normal for real reviews.

Any sources that I might be missing? I have tried BBB.

Only available in certain areas, but I have had more luck with Consumer's Checkbook:

Barber shop or (if female) beauty salon.

Depending on the size and scope of the project, you might consider "word of mouth" Facebook groups if any for your neighborhood. I've only started using them recently, but am 2 for 2 so far (fence repairs and replacing indoor hanging lights). For example, "word of mouth Venneford Ranch" etc.

Yelp.
Be sure to read the "not recommended" reviews.

Check with your state's contracting board. I always look at their website to make sure the contractor is still licensed and bonded, and to check for a history of complaints.

Agreed. I wouldn't necessarily be suspicious of a series of unusually literate 5-star reviews of an entity like a paving contractor, especially if the reviewers' profiles indicate that they have written at least a few other reviews (reducing the likelihood of total fakery). In my experience, people who take the time to write reviews of something relating to home/businessownership are usually more cogent than reviewers of, say, a bar.

Skip the reviews and look at some of his work in person, the older the better.

Where I used to live concrete contractors would embed a stamp, with their name, phone, and year of installation.

You can't beat looking at a contractor's prior work in person.
Where possible, talk to previous customers.
If a contractor can't or won't give a list of previous projects completed to satisfaction, you have to ask, Why?
