I'm a big Apple fan, but nope. The annual iterations have become less and less meaningful each year.

The iPhone 8 was around $800, so not that surprising. It is basically a fully decked out small computer. Apple has a good reputation when it comes to hardware. I am not exactly jumping up and down for it but its price is not way out there. I think we are just so used to cell companies subsiding the phone that we never realized the true price.

Yeah, $1,000 every two years for a phone is way too much, but I'm sure consumers will prove me wrong.

My last iPhone was a mistake, but I was under duress. I anticipate going back to Androids once Apple shuts my current iPhone down after an innocent-looking update.

Iphone X is S41/month for 2 years where regular Iphone 8 is $30/month. It will sell no matter what the full price is.

The only bad part is it is so identifiable everyone will know you have a $1,000 phone. So I will probably opt for the 8 Plus <sigh>.

I just bought a phone 4 years ago and plan to keep it another 5.

The concern here is how Apple will do with this strategy. As long as they sell their products well, I'm all good. Apple is a big part of VTI.

Many BH travel to India so they can buy $5 phones, they aren't really the target market.

Exactly. So the incremental cost is $11/month. More to the point, for a device I use every single day for a minimum of 2 hours = 60 hours per month, works out to be less than 20 cents/hour to use a flagship phone.

I like having nice things and I can afford it. And I will pay full price upfront as I always do.

For me, the difference between a $700 iphone and a $1,000 iphone isn't really material- especially in light of the cost of the service, which is around $1,000 annually. The $1,000 barrier is mostly just psychological.

Initially, I was planning on upgrading my 6s to this regardless of the price hike. However, I have a few concerns that may prevent me from upgrading this cycle that have little to do with the price:

1) I was concerned about the removal of touch id in exchange for facial recognition. The failure during the demo was not confidence inspiring. I'm reminded of the first-gen touch ID, which only worked properly for me about 30-40% of the time- it was borderline unusable. The current generation works more like 80% of the time, which is often enough that It actually adds a reasonable amount of value. If the face recognition is like first gen touch, I will not be happy with the phone.
2) I'm not a fan of swipe gestures- they tend to produce accidental results in my experience. The home function is rather essential- turning it into a swipe concerns me.
3) I don't like how the base model is only 64gb, with the sizes of the photos/videos this thing will turn out, you are pretty much forced to upgrade storage, and there is no intermediate 128gb model.
4) The notch in the display may be distracting (hard to tell without using it)
5) I like still having a headphone jack. Even though I often use bluetooth headphones, it's nice to be able to have an audio out port that can be adapted to older sound systems.

Will the prices of the 6 and 7 models drop now that the 8 and X are out?

I'm not a "tech" junkie, however the X just sounds like a more expensive version of the Samsung Galaxy s8 which also has no home button and facial and iris recognition.

Edit: forgot to add, but the Samsung also has wireless charging.

Also, the FaceID attempt during the presentation was NOT a fail in the technical sense. It actually worked, but it required a password to enable. However, it was undoubtedly a fail in terms of presentation because it left the impression that it did not work.

No new features. Face ID is useless.
Still using Iphone 6 which is fast enough.

All you need is LTE. Unless 5g comes out no point to upgrade

People pay $150/month to watch TV. The phone can do that plus an insane amount more.

It actually can be argued about a bargain.

Years and years of carrier-subsidized phones incorrectly shaped out view of small computer pricing.

I think the wireless charging is cool. I'm not sure it's worth the price tag but it's cool.

The facial recognition is alarming to privacy. The top of the iPhone X looks bad where the camera is. The 8 looks like a decent improvement. What is going to happen with the iPhone 9? lol

I dont buy on cost, i buy on ROI. iphones have an incredible ROI for me in time, convenience, access, work, and features. I will likely buy. Never had one that didnt have a huge ROI. Way more than any index fund. YMMV.

I think Face ID is cool in that it allows for a larger screen area by getting rid of the Home button. The X has a larger screen in a smaller/lighter phone. Higher resolution, much higher contrast ratio with OLED.

However, like you I think I'll wait for 5G to come out and be commonly available. I'm thinking maybe 2020. I have a 6+.

But that's not unique to the X. It's also on the 8, starting at $699. And on numerous Android phones for the past 5 years. last week I just got the seventh so-equipped phone in our household (some now retired, obviously). It's absolutely a game-changer--it just isn't new. The first one I can remember is the Palm Pre back in early 2009. one of my coworkers had one.

That's subjective. It's fine to say that there aren't any features that you value over X device. But to assert that there is nothing new is silly.

For me, I like the new form factor (finally back to the glass back), edge-to-edge screen, enhanced camera features, touch to wake, wireless charging, and enhanced security through FaceID. I was going to upgrade anyway, so the only question is whether the X is worth a few hundred dollars more than the 8. Given the amount of time I use the device, the screen alone is worth that. You get the usable space of the 8-plus screen in the 8 form factor. So yes, in my subjective opinion, there are "truly important" differentiating factors. But maybe not for you :).

How is it more alarming than TouchID? I'm waiting for the security experts to chime in, but Apple says it is much more secure (unless you have a twin). In the keynote, they said the chances of unauthorized access with FaceID are 1 in 1,000,000 while it is 1 in 50,000 with TouchID. Do you think it's easier for someone to make a mask of your face (which Apple says it has accounted for) than to copy your fingerprint?

How does charging work with the cordless thing? I often use an external battery to recharge during the day when I'm out and about. The cordless thing sounds like it will have to be laying on the flat surface. That's a dealbreaker for me. It does the opposite of the intent...the intent of wireless charging is to untether the phone from the cord. Yet the cord is less restrictive than having to be laying flat on the charging surface. Am I missing something?

You can still charge it with the lightning port. This is just an extra option. It might be nice to just throw the phone on the nightstand.

It's also a slightly clunky way to charge your phone and also use the lightning port for something else, like audio out. I won't use wireless charging but it ticks a box and is important to some.

Of course. Years ago you would pay a "small" premium for Apple products. Now you pay nearly double the price of what something is worth.
Amazon Echo is $180 (Can get for nearly half that if you wait for a sale like on Prime Day).
Guess how much Apple will charge for its new competing "Echo-like" device? $350. They wait until someone else ships something - see what features people like - then ship something similar at twice the price. And there are so MANY loyal Apple followers who think the interface is still so much better they will buy it (and I'm sure many will chime in here :)).
Years ago I loved Apple - that stopped with the iPhone4. I looked at it and said "Why would I pay for a smart phone that has less processing power and only 3G when I can get one much cheaper with more processing power and 4G". Every time I've done the analysis I come to the same conclusion. Of course many disagree making Apple the largest company on the S&P500 (by market Cap).

No new features. Face ID is useless.
Still using Iphone 6 which is fast enough.

All you need is LTE. Unless 5g comes out no point to upgrade

Technically, we don't even really have 4G yet. The International Telecommunications Union-Radio defined 4G in 2008 as 1Gbps when standing still and 100Mbps when moving. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G

Even LTE is not actually 4G (http://www.androidauthority.com/4g-vs-lte-274882/) coming in at 100Mbps instead of 1Gbps. This is due to phones using Release 8 instead of Release 10.

The closest you can get, as far as I know, is a device with 4G LTE-Advanced: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_d ... E_Advanced, but virtually none of those can support 1Gbps. Yet their connections are called things like 4G+ or 4G LTE ULTRA to make you think they're even better than 4G, which they're not.

As for 5G? That's been defined as 20Gbps download speed: https://liliputing.com/2017/02/united-n ... erage.html.

Its handy to keep a wireless charging pod on your desktop - you can simply drop the phone on it to charge it when it isn't in use without having to deal with wires. There is a local starbucks near me that have pods built into the tables - also handy to just put down my phone to get some charge while drinking my coffee. I've been doing this for 4 years now - nice that Apple is finally catching up :happy

I dont buy on cost, i buy on ROI. iphones have an incredible ROI for me in time, convenience, access, work, and features. I will likely buy. Never had one that didnt have a huge ROI. Way more than any index fund. YMMV.
Uhm.. What happened to your current phone? If Apple were not to introduce a new phone every year, would your current phone be useless?
Search for previous threads on Apple products, Sambb has stated that he would gladly pay 25x or maybe even 50x what an Iphone (and Iwatch) currently sells for because the ROI is that high for him. Hey, if you have the money, more power to you.
That's why Apple stock is doing well. Personally, I would pay $300 max for it if I need a new phone. Manufacturing cost of a new iPhone is roughly $225-$250. I'd give Apple 20% margin. But that's it. Now Apple price it at $1000, I'll let someone else buy it.

The facial recognition is alarming to privacy. The top of the iPhone X looks bad where the camera is. The 8 looks like a decent improvement. What is going to happen with the iPhone 9? lol
No, I am referring to an NSA Big Brother type facial tracking that Apple is implementing. It is an invasion of privacy. Hopefully you're not forced to use it.

How much is the top of the line phone that's equivalent to today's iPhone 7Plus (the big one) with the max memory?

You can always opt to use a passcode instead. For the record, the FaceID information is stored locally on the device.
