Elite status clubs that you are part of?

Post by miamivice » Fri Aug 11, 2017 8:14 pm

Are there any elite status clubs that you are part of?

For example, Hilton Hhonors, Marriott Rewards, Vanguard Flagship, etc, etc, etc.

What benefits do you get from your elite status membership?

I'm a member of several, but only 'elite' with United and Starwood. With United I get free upgrades regularly, which is a huge benefit, and free luggage / early boarding etc. (I'm also a 'million-miler' with United (and American and Air Canada) which gives my wife identical status - that' a great perk for her!) With Starwood as a Platinum member I get guaranteed early check-in...so when I take a morning flight to Toronto I check in at the Sheraton at 8am and can work from my hotel room all day...for no extra charge. This status was 'earned' through traveling 100 days per year, so not sure I recommend pursuing it! But if you do travel frequently it makes sense to be vigilant in maximizing 'points' and 'status'.

Many travel programs. I was a bit ticked off when I lost Delta Diamond status earlier this year... too much time on United I guess. But, I'll make lifetime platinum status with Marriott before year end. Elite level status with several hotels and airlines (25 years in consulting with heavy travel from day 1).

The perks are nice (e.g. upgraded to first class to/from Seattle last week, upgrade to a multi-room corner suite at the Renaissance hotel in chicago last night, no baggage fees, free airport lounge access, etc). Vanguard Flagship, but I really haven't taken advantage of these benefits.

Fidelity Private Client. It means I get a personal adviser who I get to tell not to call me and a special telephone number which I ignore and use the main number to avoid the "Oh, your personal adviser isn't available right now, do you want him to call you?".

Gold with United, Delta, SPG/Marriott, Hyatt (or whatever the equivalent in their new program is), and Starbucks (even though their coffee is crap. The food ain't bad).

The perks are nice and essentially make traveling bearable. A few years ago I had a role that didn't require much travel and lost all of my elite status. Boarding in Group 5 with nowhere to throw my bags got old quickly. Earning it back was a slog.

Now it just sort of streamlines things. Probably the best part is the mileage "accelerator" - Golds on UA earn 5x (or 7x? I dunno, it's a lot more) the points of members with no status. Rewards add up pretty quickly if you're in paid business class.

I used to really care about this sort of status, to the point that I flew mileage runs to secure the next level up, had all my brag tags on my work bag, and almost used it to define me to a certain extent. That's probably not very healthy... even though I was just sort of playing the game.

Now, it's a result vs. a quest. Getting married and having kids probably changed my perspective on this. :happy

Casino comps can make you feel pretty special. Waking up in a nice room to find that the bill "has been taken care of" compliments of so and so when you didn't ask for it.

Sam's Club Plus membership. It lets you shop the store for 3 hours (7am - 10am) before the general public opening.

I'm curious about what the Fidelity Private Client people provide advice about or help with (since I have my funds with Fidelity).
I am usually very wary about talking to anyone there because they usually just try to sell me something and it's annoying.

And sometimes they phone me for no reason, which is really disturbing and makes me want to switch to Vanguard just for this alone.
I'm thinking of giving them a GoogleVoice number, but I don't just in case it's something important (but there has never been anything important).
(This was mentioned above by Jack. Thanks in advance.)

Not a club, but my wife/me will be joining a select few when we each claim our age-70 SS benefit early next year. Only around 2% of men and 4% of women reach this goal, however I'm sure the percentages are/will be much higher for those who participate in this forum.

Vanguard Flagship. I get to talk to whoever is covering for my Flagship Rep that day, pretty quickly. Use it every other year, on average.

My wife has some elite FF status on various airlines. Gets lounge privileges and the occasional upgrade.

Actually, I'm the token Densa member of that community. I'm just an average user and wouldn't know a terminal command if it hit me. (exaggeration, but not by much)
