Lexus Rx 350 or 450

Post by jlj » Sun Jul 30, 2017 7:49 pm

Advice on what time of year and where to find best deals on Rx 350 of 450. Our 2005 Rx 330 has been an exceptionally good car with 200K miles now. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I got my RX350 during August of 2014. Deal was good but it has nothing to do with timing, I think.

The car was on the lot for over 30 days; the dealer had about 30 of these around (end of lease gut?); color was common (dark grey metallic - my neighbor down the street has the identical model); car had couple of cosmetic scratches; passenger seat had a small and minor (not deep) scratch.

All these factors seemed to help my negotiation. I did at least one dumb thing though - bought road hazard warranty on the tires since I lived near NYC. Live and learn.

I could not justify getting a hybrid 450, in light of the battery life.

By all means, ignore the listed price and the sales person harping about how popular and reliable the SUV is. Tell him/her that it drives like a dud (it's for your wife, etc.).

GL.

GL, thanks for your reply. Where did you get information about 450 battery life?

My wife has a 7-year-old RX 450h. She got it as a 3-year-old off-lease CPO from one of our local dealerships in the Research Triangle in North Carolina, where both 350 and 450h were in abundance. I would recommend the 450h over the 350 for the more refined and smooth driving experience, for not much incremental cost increase. Gas mileage is better but probably not worth the premium given how cheap gas is nowadays, but I consider it a much better ride compared to the non-hybrid version.

With respect to timing, I think late spring/early summer is slightly preferable for new Lexuses, as that's typically the end of the model year and you can sometimes get new old stock at a discount. If you'd prefer a used or CPO, late summer may work better because you can get off-lease deals that are typically well-maintained.

We've never had any issues with the battery performance or battery degradation, for what it's worth. I've also had a hybrid in the past for 11 years without any issues with the hybrid system, and only had to get rid of it after a problem with the internal combustion engine. I would submit that avoiding a hybrid over fears about the battery is pretty 2003.
