Pre-owned X5 xDrive35d or ML 250 Bluetec
Pre-owned X5 xDrive35d or ML 250 Bluetec
We are considering an off-lease mid-size diesel SUV; narrowed to X5 and ML with 30-40k miles, planning to keep for next 7-8 years or till 90kmi with annual average of ~6000 miles. X5 is about $3-4k more than ML with similar miles. I suspect ML wll be cheaper to maintain as it has a more reliable powertrain, and less electronics to fail. Anyone else had owned both vehicles?

You might want to spell out that the X5 is a BMW and the ML Bluetech is a Mercedes in the title. I had no idea what an ML Bluetech was until I googled it. Which unfortunately means I will not be of much help...

Have had both Mercedes and BMW's (along with a few friends who have as well).
Overall, I have found that the reliability of MB, as you have mentioned, is better than the BMW. However, this is sort of a "pay to play" scenario. The X5 is a fun drive and pretty quick. You can rip around pretty good for an SUV and have a more "fun" driving experience in the X5.
We currently own a 1999 ML320 and love it and have driven a friend's 2005 X5 extensively.
The engine in the X5 has come a long ways, I had the 335i with the N54 engine and its plethora of issues!
Overall, expect a cushier "luxury" ride in the Mercedes compared to a harsher "sportier" feel in the X5.

My wife has a 3 year-old ML350 Bluetec. 60k miles on the clock and not one single issue so far (knocks wood).
