Naming boat

Post by cheapindexer » Sat Jun 10, 2017 2:12 pm

Hello bogleheads

We just bought a boat , it's been quite fun using it with family / friends.

I'm looking for the right name to put on the back. Any suggestions ?
I was thinking between
1) boglehead. However , is that trademarked so I can't ?
2) 60/40
3) stay the course
4) dollar cost average

What do you think ?

One of the best boat names I have seen is "Field Office."

Having worked in construction where the worksites have field offices, I can see a construction company owner telling the home office staff "I'll be at the field office today."

So, you can't. I'm not a lawyer, but I would think that "Boglehead" would be considered similar enough - you still can't.

No lawyer here, but I wonder if naming a boat (what you paint on it) would be considered a violation of anything?

How about "Index 500"

Love this one. I would even put it on a row boat or canoe, if I had one.

A word of caution for the OP: don't name the boat "Bull." That was Bernie Madoff's name for his yacht.

If you plan on making boating a lifelong hobby, just name your first boat "Chapter One". It will make naming each subsequent (and more lavish) boat that much easier, right up through "Chapter Eleven" :happy

Is it new or used? I ask because there is of course an imperative procedure to be followed when renaming a boat.

Here's one version of the procedure:

Assignment

It's been said that was the name of Walter Cronkite's boat. When he was on vacation, the substitute anchor could then in all truth say that "Walter is away, on Assignment, and will return Monday."

I named my boat Vanguard I tell anyone who asks it's named after the mutual fund I drained to buy it. (It's a small, old boat.)

But, whatever you do don't name yours Sea Foam, please.

Bogleheads is only trademarked in association with the goods and services of "PROVIDING INFORMATION AND RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF FINANCE AND FINANCIAL INVESTMENTS" in international class 036. It would be quite the stretch to argue that the trademark is broad enough to cover boats.

Delta faucets and Delta airlines have trademarks that peacefully co-exist.
