Would you exchange a 2001 4Runner for a 2007 Santa Fe?

Post by sidr » Mon May 01, 2017 1:06 pm

We are the original owners of a 2001 Toyota 4Runner Limited (v6 rear wheel drive) with 105k miles. It's been a great car as far as reliability, and is up to date with its scheduled maintenance. My parents are getting rid of their 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited (3.4 or 3.5L V6 4wd, has 3rd row of seats) with about 50k miles, and have asked if we'd want it. The reliability of the Santa Fe hasn't been great (most of the suspension has needed replacement at one point or another), but there are no trouble spots right now. It's up to date with its maintenance (but timing belt will be due soon).

Would you give up the 4Runner for the Santa Fe? We will put about 3k miles/year on the car. (My mechanic said that he thought it was a wash; not helpful for me to decide.) Thanks!

(edited to change 2006 to 2007 for the Santa Fe model year)

I think you answered your question

the 4Runner has been reliable

the Santa Fe has not

You aren't driving very much... 4Runners last forever...mechanic said it's a wash... you already own the 4Runner.

K.I.S.S principles apply I think

No, keep the 4 Runner. I suspect the reason your parents are getting rid of the Santa Fe is the poor reliability. Why would you want it? Your 4 Runner is reliable and rugged and runs great and is low miles for a Toyota. All kinds of people in Tahoe have old ones around me with 150K or 200K miles that they still drive a lot. They are sort of bullet proof winter cars if they have 4x4. In fact if they are sold used, friends buy them. They are never sold publicly. Plus I am pretty sure the 2WD cars are just as good.

So I suggest you keep yours. Good Luck.

Thank you. My parents are getting rid of the Santa Fe because they want a bigger car (for bigger grandchildren) with the full suite of active safety technologies (they're getting a new Highlander). All else being equal, the Santa Fe would be better for me because of the third row and 4wd, but I now have two votes from BH saying that they're not equal.

Good lord no. That generation 4runner is one of the best SUV's ever made and you barely have it broken in yet. The only thing that would cause me to get rid of your 4runner is the RWD instead of 4wd.

Apparently the 2001 4Runner has electronic stability control (ESC) and the 2006 Santa Fee does not.

4Runner "2001 models were equipped with Vehicle Stability Control standard"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_4Runner

The Santa Fe is not listed here:

https://www.safercar.gov/Vehicle-Shoppe ... 80%93-2006

"The IIHS study concluded that ESC reduces the likelihood of all fatal crashes by 43%, fatal single-vehicle crashes by 56%, and fatal single-vehicle rollovers by 77–80%."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroni ... ty_control

But, don't completely trust those sources, you can double-check since you have access to both vehicles.

Also, you are only putting 3k miles/year on the vehicle, factor that in.

I wouldn't even consider the Hyundai.

The reliability of older 4-runners is legendary and yours sounds like it has just started getting broken in. While Hyundai has improved quite a bit in recent years, mid-00's was still a time when they were a bargain-basement brand that produced products consistent with that reputation.

I wouldn't. The 4Runner is a good vehicle. A 2006 Hyundai is questionable. If you want to get rid of the 4Runner and get something with a 4th row, only go the Hyundai if that is what you would choose starting from scratch in your vehicle search.

+1. I had a 2000 4Runner that I took to 220k miles. By far the best vehicle I have ever owned. I still miss it compared to our "upgraded" 2009 Highlander

The 2001 4Runner is bulletproof and safe. I'd hang onto it if it were mine.

Thank you everyone. In checking whether the Hyundai has ESC, it turns out that my dad's car must be an 07, because it has a third row, which was apparently unavailable before. That would make it the first year of the (2007-2012 generation) redesign, with ESC standard.

The 4 runner hands down. It will last forever with only the normal maintenance needed most likely. The santa fe would be interesting just because it is 4wd. If you have a need for 4wd it would be an okay second vehicle for that depending if you could keep two vehicles. A paid off 4 runner though with only 105k miles, I would not get rid of by any means.

Not just no, but hell no. The most likely thing to take your 4Runner off the road is an accident. The second most likely is the body rusting off the frame, which you should expect somewhere between 300k and 500k miles, depending on where you live.

Other than that, they're pretty much un-killable. If you're happy with it, drive it until the wheels body falls off.

No way. On top of the reasons already mentioned here the 4Runner is a cool vehicle and anything with a Hyundai badge is as uncool as it gets.

We've now had seven (presently own #s 6 & & 7, a 2011 and a 2015) 4Runners, including---a number of years back---a third generation 2002. That said, we did get rid of the 2002----we had bought it new and sold it when it hit 330K miles----figuring it was about time for an upgrade. :beer

Keep the 4runner! I bought mine new in 1997 and gave it to a friend in 2016. 19 years and 216,000 miles.
Loved that vehicle. Needed 3rd row seating, so bought a new 4runner. Plan to keep this one for 2 decades as well.

Curious as to your thoughts on the "newer" 4Runners. My wife and I are huge Toyota fans (currently own a 2009 Highlander and 2016 Tacoma; previously drove a 2000 4Runner and 2004 Tacoma).

As stated before, my 2000 4Runner was the best car I ever owned hands down. When our Highlander craps out, we'd love to get a new 4Runner but the sticker shock is real. Love the reputation and reliability, and would undoubtedly drive it for 12+ years, but have a hard time throwing that kind of coin down on a vehicle, ANY vehicle....

The problem is that there are no real good alternatives to the 4runner and thats what SUV's cost these days.

safecar.gov indicates ESC was standard on the 2007 model and not even an option for 2006.

The vehicle should show an icon representing ESC at startup or when you turn on the switch and it may have a ESC off button. (You should almost never turn it off, check the owner's manual on this.)

As an owner of both a 1995 and a 2006 4Runner, both on the road still, and no repairs needed, keep your 4Runner. The SantaFe will only increase in maintenance costs. The 4Runner is built on a full frame like a truck; maintaining it's structural integrity over time, much better than other SUV's.

Even if it was RWD I wouldn't trade it for the Santa Fe. That's insanity

Well, we''ve gotten into the habit of just buying 4Runners----they're just about bullet-proof in terms of reliablity----the new ones, too. In some ways, the best part about them is the trade-in value for them, which is just off the charts.

That said, in my house the argument is always over which model to purchase, the SR5 (which, at almost $10K less, I'm more prone to go for) and the Limited (which the wife likes)----well, she usually "wins"----but that's okay, "you can't take it with you."
I know that you think you understand what you thought I said, but I don't think you realize that what I said is necessarily what I meant......

I once asked my mechanic about owning a Hyundai.

He said that he loved customers' Hyundais because they were in the shop a lot.

However, he owned Hondas and Toyotas for his own family.

Absolutely not! Seems like most commenters agree.

I have a 2002 4runner with 165,000 miles and it's just getting broken in :) I joke it will be my eldest first car (he is 8).

Sante Fe is not even in the same league, despite being newer.

Not speaking to this specific situation, but Hyundais have the best warranty in the business and have very rapidly moved up the consumer reports lists of most reliable vehicles over the past decade. Outside of oil changes and the requisite timing belt, my '09 Hyundai has never seen the inside of a shop.

Just bought a 2015 4Runner Limited. No experience with longevity, but purchasing used 4runners was EXPENSIVE. They hold their value like crazy.

I agree about keeping the 4Runner. At some point you might want to add a more practical car but still keep the 4Runner for fun (and 4 wheel drive).

Separate note, Hyundai and Kia are currently both rated higher than Honda for reliability and make very nice cars. My personal feeling is that it varies model to model but they are at least as good as Honda for both the short and long term. Toyota still has the lead in reliability. That mechanic will most likely be working on his family's Hondas more than his customers Hyundai's :D

Not saying I disagree -I'd love a 4runner with only 100k, but we have had a 2003 santa fe since new and no reliability problems, currently at 180k miles.
take the santa fe and I'll buy it from you;)
