Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
So I have been to Chicago several times staying more on the north side near Wrigley Field. Have been there for a ballgame. We had friends that used to live there and always stayed with them in their great location condo near lots of great restaurants and bars, in a great neighborhood, walking distance to the park. But I have never really been to the "south side" of Chicago...
Is it nice? If we wanted to see our hometown team play the White Sox on a Fri or Sat night, is it worth staying somewhere close to US Cellular (now apparently Guaranteed Rate) field so we can walk there from our hotel or Airbnb? Are there nice restaurants or bars or pubs around like there are near Wrigley? Anything cool to do for 3 guys in their early 30s?
Or is this side of town the ugly stepchild? Would it be better to stay up further and maybe take the metro down (if it goes that far)?
We would drive in but would like to avoid driving anywhere once we get there and park.

Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
You can stay anywhere in Chicago and get to that stadium by the CTA (train). I suspect most people use the CTA to get to the stadium.
IIT is around there, but I don't recall any special reason to stay around there unless you are teaching a course at IIT.
I will stay up by Millennium Park or north and just walk, Uber, or public transportation everywhere. From O'Hare to Downtown, the CTA is convenient, so no need for car at all:
Oh, you are driving in. Never mind.

Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
Livesoft is correct (as usual). You would be better off staying in the city or northside and taking the CTA train to White Sox park. If you are determined to stay somewhere near the field or go out for drinks closeby, I'm sure there are places in Bridgeport and Little Italy.livesoft wrote:You can stay anywhere in Chicago and get to that stadium by the CTA (train). Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
I'd suggest no further south than Roosevelt and State which has a red line station that'll directly bring you to Comiskey/US Cell/ G-rate. Roughly a 10-15 minute ride away on the train from there and you're close to the musuems if you're interested in that. If night life is your thing you're not far away from that either by cab/bus/train.
Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
We have visited Chicago many times but the meteoric climb in the shootings/murder rate has us staying away now. Simply not worth the risk compared to other locations. Good luck.
Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
The area directly around Guaranteed Rate has been improving. Some bars, some restaurants, etc. Not Wrigleyville, but much better than it was. The area surrounding the park is generally plenty safe and I wouldn't be concerned going to a night game there.
But as LIvesoft said, the CTA/Subway/El is the way around Chicago. The Amber Inn is the only hotel I can think of that is walking distance to the field, so you are probably going to train/Uber/Cab it to the game anyway. Might be worth finding a hotel near downtown so you can take in part of the city before/after the game.

Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
To be fair, the majority of these shootings are relegated to the far West and Far South parts of the City. Sure, there are shootings everywhere, but that is the same in most major cities. The area around Sox Park is not any worse than most other places in the City. That said, I wouldn't start walking South or West from the field.Nosferatu wrote:We have visited Chicago many times but the meteoric climb in the shootings/murder rate has us staying away now. If you're looking for bars and restaurants stay in the River North area. There's a lot going on around there. Jump on the redline and you're at sox park in no time. Bridgeport(area around Sox park) isn't bad but 3 guys in their 30s would have a much better time in River North. Don't stay by O'Hare unless you're looking to minimize your ride to the airport.
Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
Thanks everyone!
We are certainly not hell-bent on staying anywhere in particular...so it looks like staying elsewhere and taking the train to/from the stadium is the way to go.
That said, what can you guys recommend as far as a place to stay? Would be interested in recommendations for location/area and actual hotel/Airbnb/etc. The area I'm familiar with is just outside of Boystown near Wrigley, but not familiar with hotels as we've always stayed with friends. Any suggestions?
Our budget for lodging isn't going to be huge, both of my buddies are planning their 2018 weddings! So we may bunk up in 1 hotel room or share an Airbnb or something, but not looking for anything too slummy.

My understanding is that this is largely (or wholly) the result of increased gang violence? And also that (in line with the rest of the USA) violent deaths are still well down from the late 1980s/ early 1990s (when the Crack Wars were blazing, Cabrini Green etc.).Nosferatu wrote:We have visited Chicago many times but the meteoric climb in the shootings/murder rate has us staying away now. I doubt many of the readers here have any reason to go to the parts of Chicago where this is an issue?
It's probably worth knowing that I know lots of people here in Europe who are worried about being the victim of a mass shooting in an office, movie theatre or shopping mall if they visit America . Let alone sending their kid to an American school or college! Similarly one hears of Americans refusing to visit Europe because of the "terrorism danger". Distance has a way of distorting these things.

Well apparently everybody and their brother is visiting Chicago on the weekend of June 3...is there something going on?
I've checked like 5 hotels and nothing available. Really?
I was looking around the River North area based on recommendation...but maybe there's another area that is worthwhile?

Though there are certainly areas that are safe on the South side, I wouldn't call any of them tourist destinations (beyond having a couple good museums).

But...turns out an Airbnb might be the better pick. RIver North spots are all but gone and/or way out of our price range...but there are a few nearby in what looks to be "Noble Square" near River West. Right near the blue line.
Is this a decent spot???

Yes. It is a 15 minute ride to downtown on the train, but close to a lot of restaurants and bars and shops in Wicker Park. The blue line makes it hard to take trains to the north side though (you have to go all the way downtown out of your way and then transfer). Ubers are pretty reasonable in Chicago though.guitarguy wrote:I was using google maps and going direct to hotel websites...Valuethinker wrote:Assuming you did the usual Expedia etc?guitarguy wrote:Well apparently everybody and their brother is visiting Chicago on the weekend of June 3...is there something going on?

Division street is where most of the restaurants and bars are in that area. Nice in warm weather as the sidewalks are wide and just about every place has outdoor seating. There are also more restaurants and bars on North Ave, Milwaukee and Damen.

Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
I'm a Chicago Firefighter and paramedic and have worked every street south of Roosevelt at one time or another. The advice so far is good. Don't walk anywhere outside of a three block radius of Comiskey. Bridgeport/Canaryville isn't bad, but don't take any chances. Get lost two blocks the wrong way and you're in a world of hurt. You can almost certainly stay out south with the likes of all of us firefighters/cops/paramedics, but you would have to drive to the stadium, which isn't bad too bad of a drive. If you want night life, there is a ton of bars/clubs in the Beverly/Mt. Greenwood, as it's a Irish enclave. There are tons of Irish bars on Western between 103rd and 115th on Western, and a few more on 111th between Kedzie and Pulaski.
If you are intent on not driving (probably a good idea, overall), A few more Red Line stops will only take you a few minutes and you can drink on the train. The best place to stay in near the Division Street bars, which is close to Division and State. Parking anywhere is expensive, around $25 a day. Try spot hero if you are just to park it for a few days. Wrigleyville is probably too far to take a train with a buzz. There's also a good section of bars near Hubbard and State Street. If your Irish and downtown, check out Fado. Feel free to message me, I don't mind taking to you on the phone, and I might even have a room to spare.

Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
That's a great time to visit Chicago. Summer should be in bloom but it probably won't be ridiculously hot.
There's several neighborhoods outside of Lakeview that I think are worthy of consideration:
1) River North. Easy access to Sox CTA stop via Grand Red line stop. The area around Hubbard Street is the epicenter of Chicago nightlife. This area can be pretty douchey though. It also attracts some of the bridge-and-tunnel crowd on Friday and Saturday night. OK, I'm now reading these spots are gone/out of your price range so I won't continue.
2) Old Town. This is the area directly north of River North. I really love this neighborhood and would recommend considering it. The nightlife here is focused around Wells St just south (and a little north) of North Ave. Second City is also here. There's a brown line stop at North and Sedgwick. There are a lot of really nice, houses/duplexes near that brown line stop that would seem perfect for getting on Airbnb. You'd also be close by North Ave beach which is a fun place to go on the weekend. There's a giant outdoor bar in the shape of a ship called Castaways there where there will be live music.
3) Lincoln Park. This is the area north of Old Town. Great neighborhood....a lot like Old Town but maybe without a concentrated nightlife area but rather the bars are more spread out. The namesake park is nice as well and this is where the free zoo is.
4) Wicker Park/Bucktown. These are the areas to the West of Old Town and Lincoln Park. There's a nightlife area around the intersection of North Ave/Damen Ave/Milwaukee Ave. There's also a blue line stop there (Damen). Fun area. Big Star is a great place to go early, get a table outside and eat tacos while drinking beer and margaritas.
5) West Loop. In the last 5 years, nightlife has exploded here in the area around Randolph and Halsted or Green St. There's also some great restaurants here like Girl & The Goat (would need to look into reservations NOW) and Au Cheval (best burger I've ever had).
You mentioned Noble Square which is fine...it's kind of in between the West Loop and Wicker Park. There's probably not a lot going on right there but you're an easy and fast uber ride to other places. EDIT: I guess it depends where in Noble Square you're talking about. If it's near the Chicago blue line stop, you won't be close to much nightlife. But if you're by the Division blue line stop, there is indeed a fair bit going on there, especially as you venture further West on Division toward Damen.

A few suggestions:guitarguy wrote:I definitely know we'll find something to do...just looking for "guy" stuff...any suggestions?
The "Do Division" street festival is that weekend within easy walking distance of where you are staying. It is a fun festival to have a few drinks, listen to live music, and have some good street food.
If the weather is nice, North Avenue beach should be packed that weekend with 20-somethings having a good time. From where you are staying, just take the North Avenue bus east as far as it goes.
Lagunitas Brewery and Taproom is a fun indoor place to go on a tour and hang out and have a few drinks. You'd need to cab/Uber from where you are staying.
Second City has really good live comedy skits. Lots of legends / SNL members got their start there. Tickets sell out fairly quickly, so act sooner rather than later if you want tickets to the "Main Stage" shows. The North Avenue bus would get you there.
FYI, U2 is playing at Soldier Field that weekend, which is probably what is filling up the hotels.

Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
There are many great things to do on the South Side but pretty much all of them are designed for locals. Tourism on the South Side isn't really a thing. For example, my experience is that most patrons at the bars on Western Ave in Beverly (mentioned earlier) will look at you funny if you didn't go to one of the Catholic grade schools in the area. Other South Side bars (like 115 Bourbon Street) can be fun but also are more for the locals.
The South lakefront and the parks in that area are beautiful but again, there is not a lot of tourist traffic. Hyde Park might be worthwhile for a morning/lunch hour visit; maybe Chinatown too. Other than that, there is really nothing for a tourist to do, including around Sox Park. I'd pass. And definitely don't stay at a hotel (Amber Inn) on Pershing and Michigan!
If you've been to Chicago before, you generally already know where most of the touristy things are. Some other suggestions....If you're staying in Wicker Park and are a true "guitar guy" then I would go to some of the blues bars on Halsted Street; Kingston Mines is my favorite. Only about a 10 minute cab ride away. At your specific location, there's plenty of good live music at that North/Damen/Milwaukee area. Subterranean usually has good local bands.
If you're a golfer, Waveland (aka Marovitz) is a scruffy little nine-hole course right along the lakefront. Street festivals (as mentioned earlier) are usually fun, depending on the weather. And you don't have to have a ticket to enjoy the area around Wrigley during a Cubs game. Sometimes the bars around there are even more fun. For a unique experience, rooftops are probably available ($125 a ticket or so) and usually include food and an open bar.

Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
I really like these suggestions. Do Division is a must, especially if you've never gone to a Chicago street festival before. Do Division is not my favorite fest (there's at least one every weekend in Summer) as it gets a bit hipstery and is focused on bands performing their own songs, versus some other festivals where bands mostly play covers of favorites which is my preference. But maybe as a Guitar Guy you will appreciate the original music. They'll ask for a $5 or $10 donation to enter the fest, which you can choose to give or not. After that, it's free music plus tons of vendors selling food and beverages. The restaurants and bars where the street fest is happening will be open too so you can duck into one of those if you want to get out of the heat.Arthur Digby Sellers wrote: The "Do Division" street festival is that weekend within easy walking distance of where you are staying. North Ave beach is an excellent time if the weather is nice. You'll see lots of attractive people laying out, playing bags, throwing a football around, or drinking/dancing to live music at Castaways.
If you've never been to Second City (or even if you have), I consider this a must do. The shows on the Main Stage are usually really, really good. The Etc stage can be a bit more hit or miss but are usually really funny too. There's also some great improv at iO theater which is even closer to you. The Improvised Shakespeare Company performs there Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and they're great. Whirled News Tonight on Saturdays is also a favorite.
If you want to get a table outside at Big Star on the weekend, you might need to be there even before they open at 11:30 as a line forms to get the tables. If you arrive at 11:15 I think you'll be fine. Of course tables turn over and it's possible to get one later but there may be a long wait.
I wasn't kidding when I said Au Cheval was the best burger I've ever had. It's in the West Loop and is worth the trip. The downside is they do not take reservations. You could get there at 4:30 on a Saturday and wait in line til they open at 5 pm and then STILL have to wait another 30 to 60 minutes. The good news is they will take your phone number and you can go get a drink somewhere else until they're ready for you, at which point they'll text you. Make sure you get the burger with bacon and the fried egg on top! The fries are also amazing. There's a place called Small Cheval which will be right by where you're staying which is like a smaller version of Au Cheval....but I've heard the burger is not as good there (I've never been) although they don't have the kinds of waits Au Cheval does.
The Bongo Room is a legendary brunch spot with a few locations, including one near where you're staying (1470 N Milwaukee). IMO, the best way to navigate their menu is for everybody to order some sort of egg dish and then share one of their decadent dessert pancakes....having a whole dessert pancake to yourself as your main dish is just too much.
Girl & The Goat is really delicious for dinner too. I would try calling them today and see if they have reservations available that weekend.

We had a condo for weekends in River North when we lived in Madison. My favorite touristy thing was the architectural boat tour on the Chicago River.
Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
I second those that are recommending the Do Division street fest (the talent of women that are there is AMAZING). Also, eat at some West Loop restaurants as that has probably the best restaurant scene in the country outside of NYC. If it's raining check out the Lagunitas brewery or the art institute of Chicago. If it's hot out and you want to act like college kids go to North avenue beach. And if you haven't tried it already, seriously go on an architecture tour of the Chicago river and Lake Michigan an hour before sunset (make sure it's not going to rain during this time). If you want a cool casual, but fun dancing bar to meet women check out InnJoy bar. If you want a more clubby outdoor rooftop scene go to Joy District or the Godfrey hotel. For late night hot drunk scene filled with hot 20 somethings go to the bar Stout.

Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
I am going to try to weave three concepts together here.
You're the "guitar" guy, and you want something to do with your guys/buddies.
Accordingly, I recommend Buddy Guy's Legends Blues Club (on the near south side).
http://buddyguy.com/
Apparently, Buddy Guy is an old friend of Keith Richards who helped revitalize the Blues in general, and Chicago Blues in particular with the Stones hits in the early 60's.
Separately, I went to the law school affiliated with IIT, and lived in dorms on the south side in the early 1990s. I respectfully disagree with the statement that this neighborhood is no worse than others in Chicago. When I was there, it was considered a no man's land. We would exit our shuttle bus (that we took to/from the law school campus) and head straight for the dorm building only a few hundred feet away. I still had to contend with some aggressive homeless people at times. There are housing projects nearby, and exploring the neighborhood is not recommended.
However, as others have stated, there is little reason for a tourist to visit the IIT area, so you will not miss anything by sticking to the Loop and areas nearby.

Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
As someone who lives in the wicker park area, solid suggestions all around. You could spend a weekend in the greater wicker area and not hit all of the good spots. You can walk up to North Ave and take the bus straight to the lake and either hang out on the beach or walk/bike the lake front. The wrigley area would be a madhouse for the Cubs/Cards game, so it may be worth it to try and get cheap last minute tickets, or just go to the bar and watch the game.
I'm a sox fan, and the ball park is just 'ok', pretty typical for parks these days. You are not missing a ton by not going. If you want to spend some time on the south side I would check out Pilsen, Hyde park, and Bridgeport.

If you don't go further south than Roosevelt Road, then you'll be missing the Museum of Science and Industry, Hyde Park, and the University of Chicago.

University of Chicago is gorgeous and worth visiting. I also believe that OP can get there on a direct bus from Roosevelt to Hyde Park.gkaplan wrote:If you don't go further south than Roosevelt Road, then you'll be missing the Museum of Science and Industry, Hyde Park, and the University of Chicago.
Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
A few more thoughts:
MikeMak's Innjoy idea is a good one. On Saturday night they'll blast music from the 80s and 90s and there will be a lot of dancing. But in my experience there's a high guy to girl ratio and the ladies are generally not that attractive. It IS really fun though and near to where you're staying.
If you're interested in going to a late night bar (open til 4 am on Friday and 5 am on Saturday vs standard 2 am/3 am of most bars), you might consider The Hangge Uppe. Which is a ridiculous, idiotic establishment where everything is sticky, but every time I've gone (usually reluctantly) I end up having an awesome time. It's in the Gold Coast/Viagra Triangle area so definitely an Uber from where you are, but not an unreasonable one.
Another really dumb but fun idea is to do a sake bomb party at Sushi O sushi in Lincoln Park. For something like $44 a person, you get 2 hours of all you can drink beer and sake plus a bunch of sushi. This won't be the best sushi you've ever had but it's OK. The staff will lead you in doing sake bomb chants, and all the other tables will be doing their own sake bomb chants. It's a blast. You will end up really drunk...pace yourself or you'll end up praying to the porcelain god. IMO, a great plan is to book the 8 to 10 pm time slot and then go across the street to Stanley's for drinking and dancing. Stanley's will be full of attractive ladies in their 20s for you and your friends to meet.
Some friends and I booked a session at Bad Axe Throwing and it exceeded expectations. Maybe check the day or 2 before you arrive to see if they'll have a walk in session. http://badaxethrowing.com/walk-in-schedule/
There's no way you will get cheap tickets to a Cubs Cardinals game. It's a huge rivalry and the Cubs are going to be good again.

Oh and if it rains, you can get into some museums, including the world renowned Art Institute, for free that weekend with a Bank of America credit card.

If you are in that area and are interested in architecture, IIT campus is definitely worth a visit, and there is an L station right there.
Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
Wow...thanks so much for all the ideas!
It appears a stop to the Do Division festival might be in order.
Definitely looking at some good food too...Big Star, Bongo Room, Au Cheval, west loop...all duly noted.
A blues bar would be cool too...I wonder if a crisp Benjamin would get me up on stage to do a tune with the band. It's been a while but I'm sure I could pull Pride and Joy out of my hat.
Would love to go to Second City...I'm already wishing this trip was longer!
We likely won't do much dancing though...2 engaged guys and me (married 7 years) aren't really into the dancing/clubbing scene or trying to score chicks these days haha. But then again after a ton of sake...who knows! Kidding. But I'm sure we'll bar hop, and "talent" is always a plus.
A follow up to this would be...are there any good places around for late night drunken eats? We all love pizza. Like, passionately. A late night pizza joint would be boss.

These sound like a riot!! haha very cool. I can almost guarantee we'll try to do both of these. If you want to do the Sushi O Sushi sake bomb party, you do have to call a few weeks in advance and get a reservation as Friday and Saturday nights are popular. For a small group of 3 guys, they'll probably seat you at the bar, which is totally fine. Another potential post-sake-bomb activity is to head over to Shoes Pub for karaoke....it's a very short Uber ride away.
Chicago is legendary for its pizza, but I'm not a late night eater so I can't tell you the best places. I'd be surprised if there isn't something good in that Wicker Park area. If you like pizza, you do of course have to get some deep dish at some point. My personal favorite is the stuffed crust pizza at Giordano's, but I seem to be in the minority on that. A lot of people prefer Lou Malnati's. Many Chicago locals swear by Pequod's. Giordano's and Lou Malnati's are chains and have a bunch of locations. Pequod's is just in Lincoln Park, but not too far from where you're staying. If you do go to Giordano's, you can call ahead to get your pizza in the oven so that you don't have to wait 45 minutes after ordering when you arrive. OH, and a lot of people really love Piece Pizza, which will be right in your neighborhood. I wasn't that impressed but again I seem to be in the minority.

Piece on North Ave in Wicker Park is popular as he said. It is a bar type place so they are open late. I think the pizza is good, but not the best. There is also a fun place called the Boiler Room in Logan Square. It is a little outside of your neighborhood, but right off the blue line and open late too.Bfwolf wrote:Haha thanks! Yep, good advice here. As a Chicago native, I vote Pequod's. It's not a place many tourists know of, and not too far from where you are staying. Just need to show up a bit early (or late) for dinner or be prepared to wait. If you're downtown and want something more convenient, my vote goes to Gino's East in River North. Another good option is Pizzeria Uno (NOT the same as the national chain Uno's....). Note that there is Pizzeria Due literally across the street that is IDENTICAL, but with a shorter wait because tourists somehow want to say they went to the original "Uno's." Don't fall for this - go to the place with the shorter wait if you go here.
There are a TON of great restaurants in West Loop area (and everywhere in Chicago really) on Randolph and thereabouts. Au Cheval, Girl and the Goat, Avec, Blackbird, Sepia, Publican, Aviary for amazing drinks (rated as one of the top 20 bars in the WORLD -- but be prepared to pay for it, it's basically molecular gastronomy for drinks, so isn't a place to get trashed), and more. Those are more upscale, so not sure if that's what you're looking for. Also plenty to do in Bucktown/Wicker Park area, so shouldn't have a shortage of places to see and things to do. Note that that area used to be full of artists and was more transitional in the 70s -- now it's the hipster area of Chicago and very affluent although if you go a bit west, it can be dicier.
And, yeah, the alarm of crime is unfounded I think. Violent crime in Chicago is very local to neighborhoods you won't be visiting on the far south and west sides. Still be smart about things as it is a major city and things happen, but it's no different from any other major city.
Have fun!
Re: Debating a weekend in Chicago (south side)
I think a lot of the more hipstery hipsters got priced out the last few years and moved up to Logan Square. It's definitely gotten pretty affluent now.e5116 wrote:Also plenty to do in Bucktown/Wicker Park area, so shouldn't have a shortage of places to see and things to do. How did your time in Chicago turn out?guitarguy wrote:So I have been to Chicago several times staying more on the north side near Wrigley Field.

We ate some good food...Big Star, a Cuban place called 90 miles which was recommended by our Airbnb host was really good, and we had Lou Malnati's because one of the guys never had it before.
We stayed out of the traditional downtown area...ended up checking out that Do Division street festival which was OK...I've seen lots of better festivals here in Metro Detroit if I'm being honest. The band that was playing was horrendous haha...but being a musician I'm a tough judge when the vocals are all over the place and the guitar is out of tune. We also had drinks and dinner at Bar Sienna which was pretty impressive although over priced.
The only real letdown of the weekend was the Aviary. That could not have been more underwhelming. Way overpriced and the drinks were sugary nonsense that I could've made at home with a bottle of high fructose corn syrup. The service sucked too. Would never go back there.
Right before leaving on Sunday morning we had brunch/lunch at Au Cheval. Fantastic cheeseburger at 10am was a great way to cap off the weekend!!
We also took great pleasure in the fact that we bought a 24 hour day pass for the L, and rode it 23 hours and 55 minutes apart. #nailedit
Thanks for all the tips!

I was just in Chicago, too. Two highlights:
1. Rolling Stones Exhibitionism at the Navy Pier. Lots and lots of guitars, clothes, history, sets, artifacts, you name it.
2. City Mini Golf in Maggie Daley Park. I had 3 hole-in-ones the first time I played this course.

This whole post is making me jealous!
I had a trip to Chicago (never been) set for me and my wife about 9 months ago. We were all set with boat arch tour, second city, awesome restaurants, sweet hotel in water tower area, etc.... And then a dang hurricane came up the coast to where I currently live and was supposed to hit when we were gone. We couldn't leave our kids. Best of all for that trip we had round trip direct flights for $44 each way! Dang hurricane killed it all and I have been searching for cheap flights since then, but no luck.
I'll get there someday.

Sign up for the Merrill+ credit card, spend $3,000 in the first 3 months, and you'll have enough points to fly you and the wife roundtrip to Chicago (assuming you can find a flight for under $515 per person).soccerdad12 wrote:This whole post is making me jealous!

Only real downside is you have to call in to get the card these days.
