I have four automobiles and all of them run very well.

2000 Accord V6 - 93k miles
2002 Accord 4Cyl - 112k miles
2014.5 Camry - 20k - used only for long trips
1996 Quest -150K miles(used as a back up)

I am considering buying 2017 Toyota Avalon Limited next year for a cross country travel visiting national parks. I will probably trade in 2002 accord. I will still keep four cars.

No. Does there have to be a point?

Bought a 2003 Toyota Camry in 2004 with 42,000 miles on it. In the 13 years, I've had it, I've manged to added 25k more miles total. Expect to buy another certified used Toyota to replace it, likely around 2024.

From the unfrugal camp, 2014 Porsche Cayenne Turbo and 2015 911 Turbo Both purchased new. After decades of buying used cars, I decided to enjoy my financial successes.

A few decades ago I purchased a Volvo that was 20 years old with 200,000 miles on it for $1500, I drove it for four years adding 100,000 miles and then sold it for $2000. That's the best I have ever done financially with cars.

Did you have to pay income tax on the capital gain on that Volvo? :)

What's your strategy with transportation and How old is your vehicle?
My strategy is to buy good used vehicles and drive them for a long time while making sure they are maintained properly.

I recently bought my FILs 97 F150 4X4 Lariat with about 115k. Paid him full book value (nearly as much as as my then new '76 F150 4X4 was) to keep spouse's siblings from complaining. Just drove it 330 miles RT over the weekend. This replaced a now 21 year old Accord that I gave my son that now has 383k on it. It was bought it 02 with 103k for $6000.

Spouse's ride is now a 9 year old Acura TL with 133k bought 3 years ago.

I have a 2000 Volvo S70. It is a fabulous car and I do everything possible to maintain it. It has only 165,000 miles, (which for a Volvo is nothing) but the body is beginning to deteriorate. I know that eventually I will have to buy another car. Any suggestions?

I have a 1965 Pontiac (original owner) that is in my garage. Still Licensed and insured but took some things apart about ~15 years ago, need to get busy and put it back together. It is one of those circumstances that as long as you got this much apart, might as well fix/clean/rehab/replace/update other items while your at it. :annoyed

2007 Ford Escape was rear ended yesterday. Bad collision, significant damage. I anticipate it will be totaled.

Good news is my daughter and myself were not seriously injured.

I never called my employees clueless but I did find it interesting that generally they drove cars that ranged in value at the time from $30K-$80K ($40K-$100K new) and mine was $10K ($45K new). Different strokes for different folks and everyone has their personal financial story.

Had one employee making $17 per hour. She drove a newish 4-runner. No Credit, she told me she was paying 14% interest on the car and the payment was $590 per month.

The other day was at the bank, noticed the bank employee's key on the counter - it was for the new Mercedes SUV parked in the parking lot. The employee is working for the Daimler-Benz company, the bank job is just for gas money. :) My car was the oldest one in the lot.

Way back when I worked at Mega Corp the "execs" had a special parking lot right next to the front door. It held about 15 cars. For many years there was a mix of cars in that lot. You could see the frugal managers and the big spenders by the cars they drove. The frugal guys drove older sedans or older pickup trucks and the spenders drove nice new luxury sedans. Then all at once all the cars changed to nice new Lincolns or Cadillacs. It was rumored that the CEO came to visit and was upset when he had to ride in one of the frugal guys cars. So he put a car lease in every execs contract. A few years later that CEO got fired. I wonder why?

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee - 120K miles - paid $18K in 2003 with 30K miles - 16.7 cents per mile

2006 Lincoln Zephyr - 80K miles - paid $14K in 2008 with 11K miles - 15.7 cents per mile.

2013 Subaru Outback - 30K miles. Bought new in 2013 for $30K - 36.6 cents per mile.

Note how expensive new cars are versus used cars. I will have to keep the Subaru for at least a decade and drive it to 208K miles to get my costs down to !6.7 cents per mile.

Good Luck.

Not quite. You paid $18K for a used car, the car came with 30K miles on it, you drove it an additional 90K miles, the true cost per mile is the cost of car $18K/number of miles you put on it 90K miles = 20.0 cents per mile. There was a cost associated with the first 30K miles that was absorbed by the new car buyer, chances are they paid significantly more than 20 cents per mile. :)
2006 Lincoln Zephyr - 80K miles - paid $14K in 2008 with 11K miles - 15.7 cents per mile.
Same here - you put on 69K miles, you paid $14K for the car, true cost paid by you is 20.3 cents per mile.
2013 Subaru Outback - 30K miles. Bought new in 2013 for $30K - 36.6 cents per mile.
I got $1 per mile, thus far. How did you calculate 36.6 cents per mile? I calculate you only need another 149,641 more miles to go to get to 16.7 cents per mile. How did you get to 208K miles?
Note how expensive new cars are versus used cars. I will have to keep the Subaru for at least a decade and drive it to 208K miles to get my costs down to !6.7 cents per mile.

Great. You forgot the current value of the cars that I included (subtracted?) in my cents per mile calculation and I only stated my initial purchase price. My Jeep is worth about $3K or $4K right now. My Lincoln is worth $4K-$6K right now. My Subaru is worth $22K right now and I spent about $33K to lease and buy it including fees. I was offered $22k a month ago to sell it to the dealer before I bought out my lease.

So I used the current value of the cars to subtract from the purchase price and then divided that by the miles I have driven the cars.

Good Luck.

Retired and moved to Florida, dumped 90K mile 2009 Camry Hybrid commuter car last February for a 2016 Mazda Miata (red of course) with all the advanced safety features. Other car is a 2014 Mazda CX-5 SUV for all those shopping and hauling duties. Both very reliable, fuel efficient and fun to drive. Strategy is to replace vehicles every 5 or so years for warranty and tech advancement benefits, so I'm early is the cycle at the moment.

My main car is 10.5 years old with 82,000 miles. Somehow I've managed to work 11 miles or less from my home for the last 15 years. My weekend car is 1 year old today. It has maybe 4,000 miles on it.

If this was the point of the thread then maybe the question should have been "How long do you keep your cars". My cars might be 1 year and 3 years old but if I keep them until they are 10 to 15 years old and just happened to turn them over recently I'm still pretty frugal. It sounded more too me that the OP was just looking for bragging rights on the age of his car.

Glad no one was hurt. That is in fact the reason I replaced most of my cars*, but I don't particularly recommend it. One of the reasons I like to have a large emergency fund. I'm now considering how to replace my 2003 Mazda with a 2017 model, since those come with much improved smog ratings, but I hope to do that on my own schedule.

Mine is only 5 y-o, it's a 2012 VW Golf. Bought new with a 0% loan from my company when I first arrived in the US and had 30 days to get a car. I love it as much as I did when I first got it and have no plans to replace it until it dies. Which should take another decade or two since it only has like 25,000 miles.

2012 Toyota Tundra, bought new, cash, 50k miles. Pre-retirement gift to myself. :| Choked on the price as I'm normally very frugal and always buy used. Prior to that an ancient Ford F150 I drove forever.
2005 Nissan Xterra, bought used, 90k miles. Insurance bought it to replace our old Honda Element hit by a deer.
2011 John Deere - :D tractor, bought new, cash, 50 hours. More choking. Cost more than a new Prius but used daily.
Per Boglehead standards: these vehicles should meet the frugality standard?

My car is a 2007 Honda Accord with 120K miles on it, had it for almost 10 years. My wife drives a 2011 Honda odyssey with about 60k on it. I bought my car before we had kids and now have 3, so it's a little tight but hard to justify moving up to something bigger when it's paid off and runs great.

I have a 2003 Ford F350 XLT 7.3 diesel. 4x4 crew cab. I am going to purchase a new F350 Ford 6.7 diesel platinum. Crew cab, 4x4.

As I get older, I realize this may be my last vehicle, so I want it nice. I need the truck for my company, so it will cost a bit less, after tax.

My other car is a 2012 Honda civic.

Two vehicles -

2006 Hyundai Elantra - 55k
2014 Ford Taurus - 34k - bought used at about 1.5 years.

The Taurus replaced a 12.5 year old Chevy Cavalier with 155k, power (nothing) and a 5spd. Long story short, quite an upgrade.

Would strongly recommend the Taurus; it is (IMO) an outstanding value on the used market complete with numerous features and a ride that I cannot replicate in many upscale vehicles.
