5 smartphones on Cricket Wireless (AT&T) - $120/month - 2 5GB plans, 3 2.5GB plans

3 smartphones on RingPlus (Sprint) - $0/month, each line with 1,500 min/1,500 texts/1,500 MB data

5 direct family members, 2 parents, 1 home phone

$120/8 = $15 per line/per month average. :moneybag

AT&T, 2 lines and a tablet, 3 GB shared data. $81. This is with no phone subsidy, the bill will increase when I need new phones, unless I bring my own. Unlimited calls and text, includes all fees and taxes.

Google Fi

2 GB data each
Averaging $70/mo for both (I love the experience of reading the credit on my bill for unused data)

Excellent experience and I have had to call for support due to my wanting two numbers associated with one line.

Looking forward to continued service while in Spain on vacation.

Ting Wireless

2 lines - iPhones
3.0 GB LTE data (shared)
1,000 messages (shared)
1,000 minutes (shared)

$71 / month or less depending on use. They just this month reduced the cost of data.

Previously with AT&T, Verizon, Sprint... saving at least 50%.

Best customer service I've ever received from a wireless carrier.

Advertisement-based revenue model. Sounds obnoxious to me, but I guess if you don't mind it, why not?

Ditto, switched from Verizon to Ting a few months ago and love it! I love that I can put caps on the usage---Verizon charged me $5 per month to do that AND it never worked! :annoyed

3 lines
Ting (1 line uses Sprint, 2 lines use TMobile)
<100 mins of talk
1000-2000 texts
1 GB data (2 lines use hardly any data)
$45.55 last bill, but upcoming bill should be closer to $42 as price for data has dropped.

$100/year
Tracfone 1200 min + 1200 texts + 1200 Mbytes per year for 100/yr.

Just signed up for Google Fi, and will try that as an upgrade, since my smartphone is a little slow at 3G,
but gets great call reception almost anywhere in the country.

Also on RingPlus here (uses Sprint network)
1 Line
2750 minutes/ 2750 texts / 2750 MB a month plan
$0 a month (Initial top up required, was about $30 I believe to start for this plan)

The "catch" with RingPlus is that anytime you make a normal outgoing call, you have to listen to an advertisement before the call goes through. Also, some people have complained about latency and delays during phone calls. I do mostly texting and data use with my phone, so I can't comment too much on that and its been a good fit for me. As far as a budget option, they are worth a look if you can put up with the quirks of the service.

It's hardly noticeable, I really don't know how they can afford to run this service. I hear an ad maybe once every 6-10 outgoing calls (none on incoming), and all other times I simply hear my choice of music (classical) instead of a ringtone. I don't voice-call that much though, so even if there were advertisements on every call it would hardly matter.

AT&T towers so service is great. Also if the kids go over they are throttled until next month cycle or if you buy an extra GB for $10. They don't automatically charge you for overage which is a big plus coming from Verizon.

Verizon, 2 lines with 3gb shared data, $88.25 including junk fees. Note that includes a 15% discount on the data plan due to being a veteran, so if you have Verizon and have served, get out your dd-214 and sign up for the discount. Trying to decide if I want to upgrade to the new plan, which is $5 a month more, but gives another gig of data and includes rollover data plus throttled data if you go over. I usually don't come close to the three gigs, but his month I hit 90%, apparently some time I spent at the gym was not on their wifi network like I thought. (well, maybe there was a little pokeman Go in there too)

Sort of off topic, but I recently converted my landline from Frontier at $44 a month to Ooma at $5. Highly recommended.

I don't remember where is was at but there was an news story a few years that was aimed at recent college graduates and calculated how much they would have if they made IRA contributions equal to their cell phone bill. I don't remember what the total was but it was staggering.

Went from Verizon 2 cell phones - I think We were at $130 a month

Down to Google fi in January of this year, 2 cell phones $50 a month on average. We are not big data users.

On a side note we were Dish network users for many many years. I think that was also $120 a month. 3 years ago we cut the cords (so to speak) and went with over the air antennas. After equipment purchase we are $0 a month now there. Between those two changes there is $190 a month savings. Or $2,280 a year, $45,600 for 20 years, or theoretically $114,000 for the above 50 year example.

A ton more, since every year the rates keep going up and up. And you can imagine that's savings of just sitting there under the mattress. Put that into the market and that's a big chunk of money. Just for making to small moves.

I've been with sprint for 6 years now and at the time I had a discount because my brother worked for FedEx. I have 3 lines and pay $150/month. Unlimited data, nights and weekend, mobile to mobile. 1500 anytime minutes. They've been trying to get me out of this plan for the past several years since they don't offer the plan anymore.

Republic wireless with 3G (I think). About $19 a month after rebate; essentially always on wifi except when in car.

DW has verizon Work phone, she pays about $65 a month, but reimbursed.

Her coverage is better than mine.

UncleScrooge, sounds like you are being ripped off. Verizon changed their plans last year and made them cheaper, and just recently changed them again to increase the data with a slight price increase. Note that if you did not change to their new plan, they kept you on their older, more expensive plan.
For example, they no longer offer the 3gb plan, but if I change to the 4gb plan it costs $5 more. You might be on an old plan, go to my Verizon and see if you can change to their new plans, if you are not under contract. I used to be on virginmobile, with my wife on verizon, but with their new plan it was a little cheaper to switch when I wanted to ug my phone. Plus verizon had a little better coverage than sprint in my area.
Their new plans charge $20 per phone, plus $35 for 2gb or $50 for 4 gb or $70 for 8 plus 2shared data. Plus $10 junk fees. I get 15% discount on data due to being a veteran. My old 3gb plan is $45 minus 15% discount but no longer available.
So Unclescrooge would pay (for 2 lines) $100 for 4gb data under their new plan. (not counting the discount). $40 for 2 phones, $50 for 4gb, $10 junk fee. (That might be a little more due to the higher overall price of the plan). One advantage of the new plan is that it does way with overages, supposedly throttles you if you exceed the data cap instead of extra fees. (They used to charge $5 extra for this service but it is now included with the new plans).
