Anyone use the Nextdoor app or other alternatives?

Post by cclark » Tue Aug 30, 2016 2:43 pm

We are in a new neighborhood and have heard about this app and wondering if it's useful at all. We would be using it keep up to date about things happening in the neighborhood as well as referrals for a gardening service, etc. I know you need to confirm your address but do you need to put in your full name or other personal info?

We have it in our neighborhood. It's fantastic. We've borrowed stuff and loaned stuff. We've taken stuff and given stuff. We've bought stuff and sold stuff. We've had discussions about topics of concern for our neighborhood. It's a great way to stay up to date, and to meet new neighbors. Our city police department is active as well.

I don't think you have to put in your full name, though I did. People's profiles are filled out to a greater or lesser extent, I'm guessing based on their desire for privacy.

Ours has more and more "commercials" (business ads) creeping in. Don't know if some areas allow administrators to keep those out.

We don't use an app, but we use the website. As Texanbybirth said, it is good for all kinds of things. We've used it to find a landscaper and handyman that are relative neighbors. It also keeps you up to date with all the crimes occurring in the area. You'll be surprised by how much crime and police activity there actually is, when everything seems quiet by all appearances.

I find it to be interesting and somewhat useful. In our neighborhood it appears that those that sign up are using their full and real names although I don't know if there is any way for the administrators to verify that they are correct. It has been good to hear about the good and bad things going on in the neighborhood.

Nextdoor is great

NextDoor.com is great. I am not an app guy.
Lost dogs, found cats, helpful neighbors, recommendations for home service providers.
I love it.

+1 joined and use the website version, to get neighborhood updates, monitor crime, sales, lost animals, new businesses opening, neighborhood drama and development ideas... while you need to put your full address in to verify your location, publicly you can have it show "Main Street" instead of your real "1234 Main Street" and you can use whatever name you want. Most use real full name, I use first and middle names.

In-line ads are starting to pop up, but to be expected, they have to make money somehow to keep the servers running. Just like FB, Instagram, etc. They are not that bad.

We joined about a year ago and I really enjoy it. As others have said, it's a great way to keep current on events in the neighborhood that you would never read about or hear on the news. I think it also helps give the neighborhood a sense of community when you can post and read about things that might impact us on an hourly or daily basis. The reports of family pets lost and then found and returned to their owners are always the best.

I'm on it in my Texas neighborhood and enjoy it. I've joined a neighborhood ladies walking group, my husband has a neighborhood men's Poker Group, and we're using it to catch a homeless guy that is robbing garages in our neighborhood. Many neighbors post warnings about poor customer service from local businesses to avoid such as pool renovators that did unsatisfactory work.

We've had two separate posts about lost and then found tortoises in our neighborhood. Who knew so many people had pet tortoises!

Next door requires some verification to at least prove you live in the neighborhood. One way is mailing a postcard to your house with a pin to complete registration.

Any social networking app is only useful if people are using the app. So the first thing you need to figure out is if it's actually used in your neighborhood. In my area, it seems to be used mostly for classifieds and for seeking recommendations for contractors.

Our neighborhood has a facebook page, but since nextdoor came out, most are using it now instead. It does tend to include nearby neighborhoods which can sometimes be useful when there are common interests. Like all social media, occasionally the noise level gets high but since it is moderated, that usually gets taken care of fairly quickly.

Most neighborhoods where we live actually have names. It's usually up to the moderator to make sure that people who have accounts attached to a particular neighborhood actually live there. As noted elsewhere, usually a number of nearby neighborhoods are included in the summary postings which can be helpful.
