unlimited sick time though if going over 6 months you go on disability. At some point they want a doctor's note.

Can only rollover to 320 hours so for many long time employees like myself you take the 4 weeks every year even if a few days are just a day here and there to hang out at the house doing chores. Four full weeks of family vacation is expensive (depending on what you do) and hard to schedule around everyone else's schedule.

13 holidays!! What are they?

Past employer:
4 weeks + US holidays
I tends to use them up, no point of being a good soldier like when I was young.

Present employer:
I own the company ;-), so I took as many days off as long as clients are happy.
As of Monday I'm retired... but still doing limited projects when not traveling or when I feel like it. :sharebeer

I'm a physician in private practice. Our pay is based on productivity, so I get no paid time off. But we can take as much unpaid time off as the schedule allows. I currently take about 7 weeks per year. Other partners take anywhere from 5 to 16.

7 years seniority at a very large Fortune 20 company in the USA.

12 Holidays

I am a radiologist. 12 weeks vacation, plus other random days off (~2 per month), plus holidays (when I am not on call, which is one major holiday/year).

I do work about 12 weekends/year, plus 3 weeks of overnight shifts, but overall I am thrilled with the time off.

9 holidays, 2 volunteer days, 1 personal day and 30 PTO. No separate sick days. PTOs start with 20 days, go to 25 after 5 years of service and 30 days after 10 years of service. Only 5 days can be carried to next year.
It is a tech company.

Just before retiring over 2.5 years ago, I had:

25 vacation days
5 personal days
12 sick days
12 holidays

Since it was "use 'em or lose 'em", it took some pre-planning to make sure I took all the 30 vacation & personal days.

My company seems to be unique in that they don't distinguish between sick and vacation days. I've been there for 8 years and get 6 weeks plus 10 holidays. It's a great system if you're never sick. Most everyone takes a week for Thanksgiving and the last two weeks in Dec off. You still have enough days for two full week vacations, and some 3 day weekends thrown in. Before I started they also had summer Fridays, which is a half day every Friday.

14 weeks off per year +
10 sick days +
2 personal days +
holidays

I use all of the above except for the sick days. I average around 4-5 sick days a year. Unused sick days carry over.

2 weeks/year
4 personal days
1 floating holiday
...which adds up to 3 weeks. Once you have been there 5 years, you start accruing additional vacation, and get 3 weeks after 10 years. No flex time. Most of the responses here make me jealous!

In 3rd year:

8 personal days
20 vacation days
28 sick days

All carry over except personal.

At 5 years it goes up a week for each level. No idea why they separate personal and vacation, there are no differing usage rules aside from carry over,

Vacation is a financial liability that needs to be kept on the books; you need to have sufficient cashflow to pay it out; etc. Personal time doesn't have any of that.

My last job before retirement -
20 vacation days
5 personal days
6 paid holidays
No limit on sick days although after 20 days or so you went on short term disability

In the last 20 years I used every single day of vacation almost every year.

I started out 37 years ago with just 5 days of vacation per year, then several years more to get to 10 days a year, and then several more to get the 15 days a year vacation. Since I retired early this year I calculated that it will take just under 2 years of no longer working to match the total vacation days I had over the last 37 years.

Unlimited vacation, 10 holidays, including a week at Christmas. I usually take 5-6 weeks off (4 of it in one chunk, preferably in another country), and work a few holidays.

I don't know the extent of it, but I believe a recent law is forcing companies to split PTO out into vacation and sick days again.

I am actually fairly senior but I took a job overseas and forgot to bargain for leave time. AFTER one year of service, I get 7 days paid leave. Quite sad. Good thing I don't mind not getting paid for the leave I will take.

Another young tech company. I'm a long-timer at 4 years. PTO is lower for first two years.

20 days PTO accrued per year but balance capped at 15 days
9 holidays
2 floating holidays, use it or lose it
1 volunteer day

14 wks? I shoulda been an anesthesiologist...

I do not know what we get but it is the max allowed, all is PTO. Under the old system it was 4 wks vacation a year plus sick time and 9 holidays. Using just the holiday/vacation time and keeping a particular schedule we could get 11 periods of 7 days off in a row. We did this nearly every month except July because July seems to be when parents want off. The total time available (S+V+H) is now less, but ability to take time off when wanted has increased. We try and carry over the maximum allowed.

Before I retired (municipal) I received 4 weeks (160 hours) annual vacation time + 2 weeks (80 hours) annual sick time in addition to 13 annual holidays. Unused vacation time and sick time could be banked, as could holidays worked, to be paid later at retirement.

I don't get any paid time off, either, nor does one of my children who works for a small employer.

My sense is that this is increasingly more common, but my view is obviously clouded by my own experience.

Mine is a little complicated, but I basically get 15 vacation days, 10 paid holidays, 5 Sick Days.

We an make up leave and holiday's, however. What this means is the month has four weeks (M-F) I have to have 160 hours. If I took leave or holiday in the month and have over 160 hours I credit that time back. So in essence we can bank holiday's for use later. I do this frequently. Despite having two week long vacations this year I have not used any vacation days, only 5 holidays. My boss also let's us use sick time anyway we want. So right now I am going to be burning up my 3 weeks of leave at Christmas (two weeks) and Thanksgiving (1 week).

Standard federal holidays, Patriot's Day (a New England thing), day after Thanksgiving, Columbus day. That is 12. Most years we get another because they are nice and it fits. Like if Christmas is Tuesday we might get Monday as well. Some years not, some years two extra. So it runs at 13 most years, +/- 1 day.

I'm retired now, but worked for a chemical manufacturing company where vacation was based on years of service:

1 wk after 6 months
2 wk/1 year
3 wk/5 years
4 wk/12 years
5 wk/18 years
6 wk/25 years
7 wk after 30 years

Additionally, there were 13 paid holidays per year, with 8 of them scheduled and 5 "personal floaters."

FWIW, "paid time off" can be a little weird.

My wife is a high school teacher so I now know a lot of teachers. Many claim woe is me, I get no "paid" vacation.

But if someone has a 52 week a year job, gets paid $75K, and gets 14 weeks of paid vacation, plus 10 paid holidays so they are at work 36 weeks a year or 180 days a year, and someone else is contracted to work 180 days a year, gets paid $75K a year and gets "no paid vacation", I confess I do not see a lot of distinction. Fundamentally they are both at work the same number of hours and get the same pay over the course of a year.

Yes, they do not get to take it just whenever, but that is true for a lot of people with paid vacation time. So there is some small difference from what some people call vacation time.

I have learned not to engage in a conversation about this point when it come up. They really don't want to hear any contrary views.

I would also add, when I take a "vacation" no one does my job for me. I have to do some combination of work extra hard to get ahead before and/or work extra hard to catch up when I return. This is true for most white collar workers as far as I can tell. Time away from the office is nice and I am glad I get it, but it does not mean any less work really.

25 days is the legal minimum here, but since I'm sort of a "semi-self-employed" consultant, I can take as much vacation as I want, though I pay for it myself. I don't think there's a limit on sick days. Parental leave is 480 days, plus another 180 if you have twins, and paid leave when your kid is sick.
All in, all the time.

Prior to retiring I worked 7 24-hour shifts per month (about 2260 hours/yr), arranged such that I had every other week off (so 26 weeks off/yr). Worked in healthcare.

Full time employees get 2 weeks vacation at the bank where I work until you've been here 10 years - then you get 3 weeks. Per policy though, every employee has to take 5 consecutive days off each year (this used to be a common bank policy to catch possible internal scammers). So besides that one big week off - which of course everyone wants at Christmas/Thanksgiving - you only have 5 days to use the rest of the year.

Of course we also get all bank holidays as well which is nice when they fall on weekdays, except they tend to be random days when no one else is off so you can't really plan a family trip or anything (Veteran's Day, Columbus Day, etc.). We get no short term disability nor paid maternity leave (certainly not paternity leave either).

Luckily my boss doesn't care what hours we keep, and I'm not hourly so my time isn't formally logged anywhere. I probably take close to 4 weeks vacation a year and regularly leave early or take a long lunch. So overall my flexibility is great, but that's not the case for most employees.

When I was employed it was 2 weeks for 5 years, 3 weeks to 10 years, 4 weeks at 15 years and 5 weeks at 25 years; with 13 paid holidays and 3 personal days.

We have "flexible" PTO, which means...actually not sure what it means. Basically no set PTO amount, but I take around 25 days a year, since that's what my wife gets at her company and we usually co-ordinate our time off!

Curious how many days you actually take off.
Not exactly sure since we don't have to log our time off so I haven't been tracking it. However, it's the freedom to take as many days off as I want that makes it nice. I used to fall into the hoarding mode when I had limited vacation days under past employers.

What's also nice is I never fall into that "I need a vacation from my vacation." In past jobs, I used to maximize my PTO by flying out on day 1 of my vacation and flying back on the last day of my vacation. Now I just pad all my vacations with some recovery days so I come back to the office truly rested.

Vacation: 20 days per year. 45 days maximum banked, rolled over each year, and payable on termination.
Holidays: 11 days per year.
Personal: 3 days per year, if no sick time used.
Sick: 8 days per year. Any days over 130 days (currently 22 days) are banked, rolled over each year, and payable on termination.

I generally take 3 personal days and 15 to 20 vacation days off per year.

I very much feel for the folks that don't have paid time off. I think it is a sad state of affairs. Given that most posting here probably have pretty good jobs, I feel like workers in the US don't have enough time off. Obviously owning a small business is a tough call for taking time away, though.

And for the few who wished they had gone in to medicine based on vacation time: I'm a radiologist - many people just don't get how much work we do during times that everyone else just expects to have off. Many MDs works long days/evenings, on-call hours, weekends and nights.

I work 7 on/7off, so some would say I have 26 weeks off. But I do work 12 hour days, that often stretch to 13-14 hrs (so avg more than 40/wk, every week, over the year), not counting occasional night call. And it requires working 52 Saturdays and Sundays a year, as well as half of all holidays.

Don't get me wrong, I love my job and know I have lots of time off (maybe 12-13 weeks off when compared to those with regular schedules), but I really need the down time. And its not as cushy as it looks on the surface.

And I am in radiology dept of 2, so no sick days. Ever.

I work in academic medicine as an Anesthesiologist and ICU physician.

1) 21-23 pure vacation days. All M-F, weekends automatic.
2) 5 days for professional leave for continuing medical education.
3) 30-40 Admin days, which I can use to work from home or office on nonclinical stuff - academics etc.
4) About 30-40 supplemental days off after working a full 7 day stretch in the ICU, depending on number of weeks worked.

Days working though? Hours do range from short weeks to weeks where I'm there 80+ hours. Those weeks are definitely no walk in the park, especially when on duty in the ICU and I have patients on the brink of death.

I work as a self-employed contractor, so zero paid.

I take very generous time off (typically between projects) between projects so I figure I have taken off about 9 years out of the last 25.

DW and I neither have stated limits at our jobs, so I guess we'd be in the "no limits" category.

She is OBG in small productivity-based practice and I do commercial litigation. Historically, and today, we strive to coordinate our schedules to take three weeks off a year.

Given that I work nearly every weekend and holiday and she has 1/4 call on weekends/holidays, the vacation days are pretty much setoff by those. (She does get an occasional day off when she doesn't have surgeries scheduled on surgery day though.)

Soon, we will be in the "every day is a vacation day" camp so as to make up for this. :happy
