High End Wrist Watches (Gone Crazy)
Re: IWC Watch, any thoughts? [Wristwatch brand]
OP back again. I bought one of these:
Got a good price on it used and just pulled the trigger. Should be here Saturday. So I went from a $20k watch to a $3500 watch.

Well, as it turns out, I bought one of these as well:
Made a low offer on Ebay and they accepted it. Not in the plan, but now I can choose which one I like and sell the other. Fun times.

That's not good news. Both transactions are through PayPal so does that provide any protection?howtohowto wrote:

It should. Paypal is supposed to be very purchaser-friendly, from what I've heard. How do you plan to authenticate? Or do you?corn18 wrote:That's not good news. Both transactions are through PayPal so does that provide any protection?howtohowto wrote:

I agree with independent authentication.Incendiary wrote:It should. Paypal is supposed to be very purchaser-friendly, from what I've heard. How do you plan to authenticate? Or do you?
PayPal protection, imo, is a toothless joke. I've bought and sold a fair amount on eBay and/or using PayPal over the years (eBay selling is BH-compatible). You will feel initially like you're activating some official channel but it really escalates nowhere, imo. You're essentially told to reach out to the other party and resolve it on your own, etc., and if you don't hear back from them within two weeks, try again. There are various timelines, etc. My worst PayPal experience was a pretty high dollar-amount transaction outside of eBay -- online transaction with a third-party reseller. eBay used to be a (semi)honorable marketplace where there really seemed to be a buyer/seller contract, but now it's mostly trolls. You'll have little recourse with eBay itself but the bigger and more-established watch sellers should want to defend their feedback rating and offer a quick refund. In the last year or two, most of my auctions have ended with the buyer reneging or never paying, etc., or not fulfilling the clearly-stated restrictions (out of the country or zero feedback, etc.). People create many accounts and "load" their feedback with tiny purchases so they can switch as soon as they get any negative feedback. It's taken most of the fun out of selling, but I've still bought some things that were decent values.
That said, I think most BH could get a "good" or "bad" vibe from an eBay ad+seller combination and would probably be correct, so I'm not implying you made a bad move -- just that the PayPal safety net is not a reliable one.

Re: IWC Watch, any thoughts? [Wristwatch brand]
I do plan to authenticate at a local IWC authorized dealer.
The $7500 Top Gun watch is from a very reputable watch company in Boston. I checked their eBay feedback, and also feedback on the WatchUSeek forums. Stand up company so I'm hoping they don't want to tarnish that perfect rep with a fake.
The $3500 watch is from a private seller on WatchUSeek and I looked him up on eBay and LinkedIn. A police sgt, so I would expect a smooth transaction there as well.
I'll know this weekend.

It's like buying a flashy high-maintenance sports car, except it generally performs worse and looks nearly identical to the budget model for a 2000%+ premium. Re: IWC Watch, any thoughts? [Wristwatch brand]
European Watch Company is reputable and has a nice storefront in Boston. The IWCs you've posted use a Valjoux 775x movement, which is widely used in watches at a much lower price. You might consider Sinn or Fortis.
If you want a luxury mechanical watch, go for it, but be sure it's a financially negligible purchase. As someone who's been there (Timezone, Purists, Watchuseek, etc.), I now mostly wear an Apple watch or a quartz Grand Seiko.

Re: IWC Watch, any thoughts? [Wristwatch brand]
I have changed my approach to a watch considerably since I started this thread. I was looking for a watch that met all my needs in one: functions, quality, dressy, not dressy, etc... Now that I have an affordable IWC chrono, I have stopped my quest for one watch to do it all. I have always been a G-shock wearer, but wanted something that fit my business environment better. The IWC does that (for $3500). And I have fallen in love with the quirks of mechanical watches. Here's my new approach:apex84 wrote:European Watch Company is reputable and has a nice storefront in Boston. 1. G-shock for everyday leisure
2. IWC chrono for work (might upgrade the SS for the ceramic Top Gun if I find the right deal)
3. Dress watch (working on this one but it will be a simple, classic, elegant watch)
It has been an interesting journey but fun. So far, it hasn't cost a fortune.

Re: IWC Watch, any thoughts? [Wristwatch brand]
Congrats! That's a nice collection with an advanced (GPS) G-shock, a solid reliable chronograph that's easy to service, and a classic, understated dress watch. As I ended up with the pieces I have, I often looked at other pieces, but eventually decided that I should focus on enjoying the ones I had. Hopefully your collection is complete. I wouldn't get the ceramic version of the IWC, although cool, it is a material that can crack and you want to be able to enjoy your watches without worry. I don't baby mine and they show plenty of scratches and dings, but I don't mind.

I had to add one more watch to the collection: Casio GW-5000. It's the same watch I wore for most of my pilot career. It's the $300 Japan version and it's what I wear the most now.
I have fallen in love with the GO Senator. Understated luxury.
I think I'm done for now.

I worry about those hybrids -- are they even fixable once the electronics go? Not sure I can see my son handing this down to my grandson (or -daughter). All the quartz watches have a finite lifespan, yes? Does it defeat the purpose of having an elegant hand-made watch? But then again, I'm not a pilot!corn18 wrote:I spoke too soon.

Why do you say that? I have bought and sold a lot of watches in the past year and broke even. This worked out well as I found 4 I really like. If you buy used and know what to pay, there is little risk of losing money.daveydoo wrote:Ah, it's almost Spring and the watch thread is back! BIL has re-sold many high-end watches for near their purchase price or even higher. Out of my league but fun to look. Enjoy!

Interesting conversation as always corn18.
I've worn the same watch for going on 21 years (bought at age 19). It cost $150.
I've always had a fascination with watches but haven't felt the urge to replace this one. This thread does have me curious again but I wouldn't be in the high end range. Probably $500 or so tops.

I own an IWC Big Pilot and two Panerai's. I purchased them several years ago when I was going through a high end watch buying phase of my life. You can't really justify the cost of these watches as an investment in my view. However, if you can afford them and that is what you wish to purchase...go for it. I have no plans of any additional high end watch purchases; however, I do not regret the purchases I've made and wear them proudly every weekend.
Good luck and let us know what you decide.

My collection will be complete once I buy an IWC, Omega, and Rolex. Don't plan to get into Holy Trinity/Big 3 or Lange territory. Corn, I hope you will so I can live vicariously.
Re: High End Wrist Watches (Gone Crazy)
Don't know anything about luxury watches but two years ago for my 50th birthday my wife bought me a Citizens Eco-Drive (it never needs a battery) and a Couch Wallet. She knew I would never buy either of those for myself. The watch cost $125 and the wallet cost $120. I love them both.
If you have the money and could easily afford and really want it, go for it. I personally am so frugal even if I had that kind of wealth would never buy something so extravagant but that's what makes the world go round. No judgment from me.

The Casio GW5000 is a classic. I have the slightly cheaper 5610 version, but have my eye on the 5000.
Re: High End Wrist Watches (Gone Crazy)
I enjoy watches, currently, own and enjoy a Breitling Superocean Chrono and lots of others. Love my Helson collection.
Some time ago my buddy gave me a 1977 June issue of Car and Driver magazine for an article about a car I once owned.
On page 30, there is an advertisement for a Tudor Chrono (made by Rolex) for the huge price of $395 that includes matching stainless steel bracelet. Used today Tudor Chrono watches sell for around $4350.
Same magazine page 100 is the Microma Chronograph, a digital quartz watch. Price then was $95, a similar Casio today is $7.99 with free shipping on Ebay.
Not saying you should buy a watch for an investment, buy it because you enjoy it and there will be a market if choose or need to sell it.

+1 for Citizen's Eco-drive. My father bought me one many years ago. Zero maintenance. Zero fiddling. Automatic DST adjust. Most reliable piece of technology I ever owned. Wore it until it didn't work any more (luminous dials faded and couldn't see them at night), then I replaced it with another Eco-drive, tungsten band which I wear 24/7. It's the perpetual calendar model with day of week and date, which is all I need.stemikger wrote:Don't know anything about luxury watches but two years ago for my 50th birthday my wife bought me a Citizens Eco-Drive (it never needs a battery) ..

Re: High End Wrist Watches (Gone Crazy)
Greetings,
I have to put my two-cents worth in on this "watch" topic.
I have been using an Astra IIIb sextant with a Cassins & Plath bubble
horizon to take sights of astronomical objects. I needed a time piece
that keeps a low and steady rate compared to the truth and is easily readable at night.
I found the Timex Expedition with the web NATO band and Indiglo feature fit the bill.
I now have two and an additional Weekender sweep second hand chronometer version.
All three have rates of about 200 milli-seconds per day and so far very stable rates
all of which is important to navigation using a sextant.
Very good performance for not many bucks! Of course, if I could get Harrisons' H-4
I would have gone for that--not in my price range, however...
