I am out of work for a while and would like to see if there are actual online jobs that pay more than 5 bucks doing surveys

^ Just FYI, like all job boards some of these are scams. Do your homework on the company you work for.

There's quite a few call centers that let you work from home online as well.

As far as freelancing gigs/running your own business...there's plenty of opportunities, but it would be hard to pay all your bills with this right away. Most people have to build up their businesses on the side over time before it gets to where it could support you.

If you have some translatable skills, upwork.com (formerly odesk.com) and similar sites are a great place to start. You can set your own hourly and apply to projects you could complete.

You should look into Upwork. I've worked with clients through their platform for the last 2 years and it's been really great.

If you have a few hours take a bunch of the skills tests and build up your profile. Clients like to see some credibility from their freelancers.
