I have had Netflix for many years, at times I feel I'm not getting my money out it as its not being used, sometime months on end. Netflix has a ton of content, but for me finding the content sometimes is challenge. As an example I'm sure I'm missing old classic movies/shows just because I have no idea what they are.

To help all us fellow Bogleheads get the most bang for our dollars out of Netflix how about we start a Netflix show list.

I just ask that you give the title and genre + any other comments
Do you have a smart TV, with a netflix button on it?
I find my netflix consumption went up 10 fold after I got a Vizio smart TV.
I went from using Windows Media Center to a OTA TiVo a few months ago. The TiVo experience is much better with Netflix.

Our favorites on Netflix so far:

TV Series:
Breaking Bad
Friday Night Lights
House of Cards
I liked Sons of Anarchy; my spouse did not.
Don't laugh, but we both liked Hart Of Dixie

Documentaries:
Broke (ESPN 30 for 30)
The Boston Bombing investigation they have on there now.
Last Men Out about the Vietnam War was fascinating
Money For Nothing about the 2008 recession

Movies:
All of the 80s and 90s spy and action movies I loved as a kid and now my kids love:
Top Gun
Days of Thunder
A bunch I can't recall.

For us it is $10 a month well spent.

Just saw this: Upcoming on Netflix (no date yet) a 10-part original series "The Crown" about the early years of Queen Elizabeth II. Trailer seems like it will appeal to people who like Masterpiece Theater-style period dramas.

Interestingly, Elizabeth II is played by the same actress who played the mother of Elizabeth I (Anne Boleyn) in the recent BBC drama Wolf Hall.

It used to be streamable, around 2 years ago if I recall. I watched the first few seasons on Netflix. I assume they'll get (pay for) the rights again eventually.

That's one annoyance with Netflix - they seem to remove content almost as often as they add it. They yanked "A Bit of Fry and Laurie" when I was midway through savoring the second season.
When Downton Abby disappeared from Netflix they announced that it had gone to Amazon Prime as an exclusive offering. Maybe that exclusivity contract will end someday. I did notice while I was in France and was checking Netflix on my tablet that Downton Abby is available there.
Good to know! I watched the first few seasons on Netflix years ago and was thinking of picking it back up again soon. Luckily I also have Amazon Prime. :)

I sometimes think my retirement plan could easily consist of watching Netflix for the rest of my life :D. Having never seen almost any of the shows that seem to be universally adored I am sure I'd be able to amuse myself endlessly. I was astounded at how much I enjoyed binge watching Breaking Bad, which I did at my daughter's insistence. She also introduced me to Orange is the New Black, which is also extremely enjoyable.

I presume there are many more nuggets of quality tv waiting. Someday, someday.

We have been watching NYPD Blue on Amazon, free with Prime. Although the series get 5 stars, it is quite dated starting in 1993. We never saw it when it ran on TV. We are in the 2nd season, seasons have 22 episodes. Great cop show despite its 4:3 aspect ratio. Interesting to observe the technology of the time, CRT monitors, huge cell phones and 20 year old cars that look new.

Does anyone know of a good resource which can let me find good/highly rated shows on Netflix from all over the world? I am missing many good shows in the US which are probably available elsewhere. I could then watch those with a proxy.

Two very good series that probably attract more of a "chick flick" audience -- that would be me:

* Gilmore Girls - Beyond the comedy and drama, money and personal finance issues are a major underlying theme to many of the plots.
* Heart of Dixie - Rom-com with a Southern twist and a fish-out-of-water central plot: brash, gorgeous NYC doctor lands in small-town Alabama.

And yes definitely a big thumbs up to "Longmire" - detective show with a modern Western setting.

There is a way to get a sorted list of Netflix or Amazon Prime movies, sorted either by quality (critic rating) or release date. Look at the film review aggregator, rottentomatoes.com:

30 Rock
Arrested Development
Archer
X-Files
Sherlock
Star Trek TNG
Firefly
Torchwood
White Collar

Buffy
Angel
The Guild
Being Human (UK, not US)
Vampire Diaries (yes, really)
It's Always Sunny

Catching up on great TV dramas and comedies is really the greatest value of Netflix, IMO.
As a heads up, Doctor Who is currently listed as available until 2/1/2016. Although I seem to recall Netflix changing its mind on this one before.

Arrow
The Flash
Gotham
Justice League
Supernatural

plus a bunch or K-Dramas (Korean)

I binge watch. Upside, without all the commercials, you can finish an entire season in 16 hours instead of 24. That way, you can watch an entire season in a day and still have 8 hours sleep. :P

Recently discovered "Rake", an Australian series about a defense lawyer who's also an ageing playboy/gambler/all-around scoundrel. Very witty and enjoyable. The first two seasons are on Netflix. Apparently it was remade as an American series (not on Netflix) which is poorly reviewed.
