[What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]

I see many Bogleheads have and use Netflix.

I have had Netflix for many years, at times I feel I'm not getting my money out it as its not being used, sometime months on end. Netflix has a ton of content, but for me finding the content sometimes is challenge. As an example I'm sure I'm missing old classic movies/shows just because I have no idea what they are.

To help all us fellow Bogleheads get the most bang for our dollars out of Netflix how about we start a Netflix show list.

I just ask that you give the title and genre + any other comments

Have you watched any of the Netflix-only TV series? Some of the ones I have enjoyed:

* House of Cards: Kevin Spacey does an excellent job playing a Machiavellian politician
* Narcos: good, gritty semi-fictional show about Pablo Escobar and the Medellin cartel in the 1970s and 1980s. Filmed in Colombia.
* The Fall: tense drama about a serial killer in Belfast
* Lilyhammer: darkish comedy about a gangster (Steve Van Zandt, who played Sil in The Sopranos, and used to be in Bruce Springsteen's band) who relocates to Norway to hide out
* Longmire: crime drama set in Wyoming. The first several seasons were on cable TV, but the show was canceled, and now Netflix is producing additional seasons.

House of Cards is one of the better shows out there - cable, HBO, or Netflix.
Orange is the New Black has a very entertaining cast of characters.
Narcos is well made and of course something about Pablo Escobar is going to be entertaining.

I still need to watch Making a Murderer, but I've heard good things.

I enjoyed Midsomer Murders, at least the early seasons. When the British series started it was a little grisly and rather camp, with an average of 3 mostly weird murders per episode. In later years they have kept up the murder count but turned darker. The most fun thing about the show is spotting every character actor you have ever seen on British TV, including some who became stars. I generally watched with IMDB open.

Nothing currently, but I'd say you have to at least try watching Mad Men and Breaking Bad--recently popular but also sure to be classics down the road.

Dexter and Damages were pretty good. Weeds was alright, at least the first few seasons. House of Cards is entertaining.

More recent ones not mentioned as often: Bloodline and Rectify. These shows take their time. More like watching a really long movie in several segments. I prefer it that way.

Doc Martin is a cute show about a doctor working in a small, seaside English village.

Most of these are dramas or drama/comedies.

My favorite shows produced by Netflix are Bloodline and River. Good stories, good acting, and good production IMO.

Other quality programming is Making a Murderer (documentary series), and the first seasons of House of Cards and OITNB.

I started Jessica Jones and couldn't bring myself to keep watching. But the superhero genre is not my thing.

Haven't had a chance to see Narcos and any of the other Netflix shows yet.

Most of my favorites have already been mentioned, but I'll add two more: Happy Valley (British police drama akin to Broadchurch) and Top of the Lake (Twin-Peaks/True-Detective-esque show set in New Zealand but starring Americans Elisabeth Moss and Holly Hunter).

Be prepared to binge watch this. You won't be able to stop. I believe it's broken up into 10 parts.

I was so fascinating, tragic, sad and at the end you are totally confused on whether they are guilty or not.

I don't think I can commit to watching Making a Murderer. I've seen The Thin Blue Line and all the Paradise Lost movies, which are excellent. I listened to Serial but didn't like it that much.

I doubt I'm going to get anything more out of Making a Murderer to make it worth 10 hours of my time just to get outraged, when there are so many other quality shows on my list to watch like Friday Night Lights. I read lots of articles about the miscarriage of justice at least weekly, if not daily. I'm open to people trying to convince me otherwise though...

Surprised not to have seen Master of None on this list. That's one of my favorite shows of the past year. Well worth a look, and worth sticking with after the first few episodes. I also enjoyed Jessica Jones and Making of a Murderer. If you need to get your money's worth, check out Bob's Burgers -- consistently funny and warm show.

Netflix is great especially if you don't care about staying current on certain shows. We use it to go back and enjoy shows we are a few seasons behind on. Here are some great ideas for you:

If you pay the extra $5 a month for DVD access, there are great movies and other shows as well, including two of our faves:

We binge watched Breaking Bad and now we are watching Lost. It's a great way to catch up on a series that you never had a chance to watch previously, especially when your other favorite current show is on a hiatus.

I thought Master of None was a disappointment overall compared to the hype before I watched it. The acting was very poor in the first half of episodes, so bad that it took me out of the show every time someone delivered a stilted line of dialogue. The only actors in the main cast I thought were up to their material were Aziz's father, Aziz in the last couple episodes, and Noel Wells in the last couple episodes.

As for the social commentary in the writing, I agreed with the stance of the show practically all the time, but I don't think it makes for good art to just hammer a viewpoint all the time. Glen Weldon on NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast articulated this a lot better than me. Rachel was also underwritten for most of the show and was basically a MPDG trope, especially in the Nashville episode.

However, there were definitely some episodes I liked. Indians on TV, Old People, Mornings, and Finale were all excellent.

The Wire is one of the all-time great TV series. Just wanted to mention that (as of a few months ago, at least) Netflix still only has the standard DVD (non-Blu Ray), standard definition (non-widescreen) version of The Wire, even though a Blu-Ray version exists. However, I discovered that Amazon Prime streams a high-definition widescreen version, which is much more pleasant to watch on modern TVs. Amazon Prime also has many other HBO series that Netflix is missing, such as The Sopranos. (However, Netflix has a better overall selection by far.)

It used to be streamable, around 2 years ago if I recall. I watched the first few seasons on Netflix. I assume they'll get (pay for) the rights again eventually.

That's one annoyance with Netflix - they seem to remove content almost as often as they add it. They yanked "A Bit of Fry and Laurie" when I was midway through savoring the second season.

Season 7 of Doc Martin us just now becoming available on PBS. It started airing here in Oregon this past week. May take up to a year before 7 shows up on Netflix, if past performance is anything to go by.

When Downton Abby disappeared from Netflix they announced that it had gone to Amazon Prime as an exclusive offering. Maybe that exclusivity contract will end someday. I did notice while I was in France and was checking Netflix on my tablet that Downton Abby is available there.

Only the last 5 seasons are on Netflix. If you want the rest, you can stream them on Hulu. Very entertaining TV.

Do you have a smart TV, with a netflix button on it?
I find my netflix consumption went up 10 fold after I got a Vizio smart TV.
