Experience with 2014-16 Hyundai Santa Fe?

Post by TxAg » Wed Oct 14, 2015 4:55 pm

As we move from one kiddo to two, we are considering replacing my wife's 2007 Jetta with a Hyundai Santa Fe....preferably used but considering new. I am in the process of doing some digging but thought I would post here in the meantime for some boglehead feedback.

This vehicle will be a daily driver, and we expect to keep it for 10 yrs or more.

I'm mainly concerned with reliability, safety, and maximizing cargo space (don't really need the third row). I'm also curious about the functionality and feel of the electronics and interior.

All thoughts and experiences appreciated. Thanks.

I've been pretty happy with our 2011 Santa Fe, 4 cyl automatic, 64,000 miles so far. Needed a vehicle to haul 3 persons stuff plus wheelchair and walker. Only complaint I have is the blue light illuminating the dash can't be turned down dim enough at night.

I put about 1,500 miles on a rented one across Utah a few weeks ago. I was overall very happy with it.

We own a 2012 Santa Fe and I have rented numerous 2014-15 Santa Fe Sports and have very very satisfied. The reliability, fit & finish, quietness, etc. have all been great and I plan to buy a 2016 Santa Fe Sport. It is a little shorter than the Santa Fe and no third seat. They have the best warranty of any auto manufacturer and I would highly recommend the Santa Fe. In fact, I just finished renting one and put over 800 miles on it in 3 days. It was the base model and I was impressed with the quiet, smooth ride, great seating, handling.

Please make sure that if you buy a pre-owned one, the warranty can be transferred to you. Enterprise car rental company that sells the cars told that we wont get the full warranty. Dont know if it applies to rental fleets only or not.

We bought a fully loaded '14 SFS and absolutely love it. I never thought I would be a Hyundai buyer, and we were originally looking at Acura MDX and Infiniti JX.

However, the value offered was immense. We have features that would be options even on luxury cars- panoramic moonroof, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, blind spot monitor, etc. We can remote start via a smartphone app. The car is fun to drive, and looks are objective, but I think it's a great looking SUV. The interior is great too. Big physical buttons in the right places. On top of that, you get to use 87 gas.

Gas mileage isn't great (about 20 in mixed driving). But I really have no issues with it (knock on wood!). My wife loves it too.

I'm pretty sure they do not transfer the full 100k mile warranties on any of their cars. We purchased a sonata (from a hyundai dealership) a few years back and we had to purchase the 100k mile warranty. The only thing that transferred was a 5yr 60k mile

We rented one for a week and personally I wasn't crazy about it due to the high belt line.

We've had a three row 2013 Santa Fe GLS AWD (first year of the current generation) for two years now and have been very pleased with it. It's used as a daily driver and was very pleasant for a family of four to take on a Washington DC vacation this year.

The great warranty was one of the major selling points for me, and I'd like to note that the 100k powertrain warranty is not transferable unless you are buying a CPO Hyundai (link).

My dad has a 2014 Santa Fe Sport and he loves it. I've driven it a few times and have been very impressed with handling, features, and fit and finish. It's a very nice car.

I own a 2014 as well. So far it has been a good car. It handles really well and has some good power. Couple issues we have had have been with the radio going out, apparently its a glitch in the system that is easy fixed (just an inconvenience) and occasionally the backup camera doesn't turn on when the car is shifted into reverse. We don't use the third row either but its great to have the extra space to store things. You can easy fit a golf bag into the back long-ways or sideways with no problems.

The one feature that I really don't like is that you have to hit accept the warning about using the radio while moving EVERY time you turn the car on. Unless someone knows how to get rid of this?

We test drove one today. We liked it but didn't live it. Perhaps it was the unknowledgable salesman. It is still on the list for now, though. Surpisingly, we prefer the Sport over the original as we felt the third row was useless and we would rather have the cargo space for less $$$.

On a side note, we also checked out the Subaru Outback and Forester. We liked these as well.

That is an annoyance that I share. Newer versions of the GPS maps apparently make the warning time out after a few seconds, but the update costs $200+. I'm seriously considering getting the 2016 update when it is released: link. I'd definitely get it if it included Apple Carplay support. :p
