Moonrise kingdom or Napoleon Dynamite. The tether ball scene at the end is priceless.

Well, maybe I'll turn Valentine's Day into Valentine's Month and hit them during the month of February! I will have gained so much insight into love and turn into a relationship expert by the time February is over.
I thought I was late to post in this thread, but you seem still interested. If I were lonely on Valentine's Day, my first choice would be The Thomas Crown Affair, the 1999 version. Let us know how your relationship expertise develops.

I bit late to this party, but I'll second the recommendations of "Notting Hill" and "Somewhere in Time".

But this Valentine's day, we watched one of my faves: The (IMHO) criminally-underrated 1989 film "Cousins".

If you're looking for a laugh, and like Saturday Night Live the Valentine special is pretty good - http://www.hulu.com/watch/751544#i0,p314,d0 Also, the 3 Andy Samberg & Justin Timberlake songs are hilarious too and so is "Twin Bed".

As for movies, it's not feel good, but if you are looking to shed a tear The Fault In Our Stars is outstanding.

Say Anything is a great early John Cusack rom-com.

My Valentine's Day movie this year was "Trouble in Paradise," a 1932 pre-Code movie featuring a male jewel thief and a female pickpocket teaming up to con a beautiful ridiculously wealthy perfume company owner who, in the words of Roger Ebert "thinks she can buy him [the jewel thief] but is content to rent him for a while". Like many pre-Code movies, surprisingly frank about sexual undertones (or overtones).

A bit late to the party but "Beautiful Girls" on Netflix is one of my favorites.

It is a high school reunion/rom-com of sorts about several men and women who have all gone down different paths, with love, self actualization, and both male and female comradery all mixed in. As a 20-something it resonated with me, I would imagine even more-so for people in their 30's.

A lot of talented young actors and actresses were in it including Timothy Hutton, Matt Dillon, Michael Rapaport, Uma Thurman, Natalie Portman, and Rosie O'Donnell.

You should take a look at Cousin, Cousine, the French film that inspired Cousin.

But it also is part comedy, owing to director Leo McCarey. Think of the scene where the boat docks in New York and for the next few minutes there's no dialogue, just the perfectly executed facial expressions of Grant and Kerr and then a perfect ending. There are more McCareyisms sprinkled throughout, usually unexpectedly, and nicely handled by the two stars.

Smokey and the Bandit.

You got your cute love story between Burt & Sally. Jerry Reed singing the tunes. Burnouts, car crashes and all around fun red-neckery.

And epic Jackie Gleason rants not seen since the Honeymooners. :beer

A contrarian approach is to watch anti-romantic movies, like Kramer versus Kramer or The War of the Roses.

The Holiday is a nice romantic movie. It's more of a Christmas/New Years film, but I could watch it any time of year.

I also recommend Napoleon Dynamite. People either love it or hate it, but it's full of romance and eccentric characters.
