I'll suggest a #7. Stop using abbreviations.

I have no idea what "ITT" or "CHL" mean! :)

ITT = "in this thread"

CHL = Canadian Hockey League (or Concealed Handgun License... not sure about OP's context)

One of my 2015 goals is to start using the 21st century technology. The stuff I still use--and technologies I still don't use--are too embarrassing to admit in a public forum.

1. Reshape my approach to life in an attempt to be happy more frequently.
2. Find a new passion. Need to find "what to retire to". Could afford to go tomorrow but do not have anything to do. Only 59 yo.
3. Worry less. I have little to worry about but worry nonstop nonetheless.
4. Definitely focus on fitness. I was healthiest at 50 and know how to get there. Just need to do it. Should help with the other items as well.

Thanks for asking. It helped me focus.

No NY resolutions, but I do incorporate each year a list of reasonable goals for the upcoming year.

This time of year is a great time to plan ahead. New calendar, new notebook, fresh start.

Not really a resolution, but I just finished up my masters degree. In completing that, I haven't gotten to fix up our home like I had originally planned.

I made a list today of items I'd like to do to our home (new flooring in the guest bathroom, various landscaping items, new light fixtures, projects to put my wood working tools to use, etc.). There are 35 items on the list and I'd love to get them all completed this year.

1. For my wife and I to say something positive to one another before going to sleep in an effort to counter the negativity and polarization that exists politically and in other areas.
2. To cut down walking to 35 miles a week, substituting twice weekly workouts for a club we just joined.
3. To curse less.

Four Resolutions for 2015

1. Read the Daf Yomi (Talmud portion) every day (I'm 2 years into this project; 5 more to go) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daf_Yomi

2. Exercise (workout, yoga, or long walk 2+ miles) every day.

3. Study Spanish every day (10+ minutes; currently using Duolingo for this)

4. Practice the flute 1 1/2 to 2 hours per day 5-7 times a week. (I'm using the Tabata exercise timer to monitor this. It's a great motivator.)

Note: For anyone thinking about learning a musical instrument, I encourage you to do it! The best time to start is today.

Only two goals this year:
1. Become Fit (started working out 6 months ago and now to a point where I can push it to next level; not looking for 6 packs abs this year but looking to participate in 10K run, and 50K bicycling events).
2. Get rid of debt (once out of debt, will never be in debt (except my house loan)).

Everything else will wait until Dec 2015.

I made a resolution to eat pizza during 2015, quickly went out and bought one at the grocers, took it home and devoured it. But realizing it was not quit midnight yet, the next day I went out for the true pizza of my resolution.

I suppose I could add something more serious. I'm memorizing the Telemann fantasias for flauto traverso, Almost done really, and beginning to learn the music now. -- Tet

Hi Jazztonight,

In 1998, I took two weeks of one-on-one Spanish in Quito and then practiced it by speaking to local people while traveling around Ecuador (1998), Peru (1999), and Mexico and Guatemala (2000). After that I did not have any exposure.

Today, I started studying Spanish again in preparation for el Camino walk in Spring of 2015. I have some Spanish tapes and books at home, and on the web I found Mi Vida Loca (BBC) and Spanish MOOC (http://www.instreamia.com/class/367140/). Now, I am wondering if I should also try Duolingo. My intent is to do 1 hour of Spanish every day for the next 90 days.

What do you think? Happy New Year!

My resolution is to better understand my personal finances. I am currently reading the Boglehead Guide to Investing book (about 2/3 of the way through) and am sad to say I've made mistakes along the way already. I am also reading other personal finances books. I've been lurking and reading the forums and most of the people here are miles above me in understanding (and what's scary is that people I think *I* know a lot... and I don't!)

I also resolved to give a more to charity (when I was reviewing my budget and making changes to it at the end of the year, I was shocked by how little I give). But I solved that by having a monthly gift to my charity of choice and wiggled that into my budget by taking away from my monthly "entertainment" budget item.

Hi, Victoria,
A friend of mine did the Camino walk recently, and I don't think he knows 10 words of Spanish!

The tools you are already using may prepare you at a higher level than the Basic Duolingo can. But since it is free to try, it can't hurt to give it a go. There is a way to "test out" of certain levels, and that's what I recommend you do.

It's working for me because "studying Spanish" is the lowest of my 4 priorities right now. An immersion course, and a stay with a Spanish-speaking family is probably still the ideal method of learning, short of living in such a place for a year or two.

HNY!

Thank you, Jazztonight!

This is a good feedback. Your fitness routine has inspired me with its simplicity and effectiveness, and now you are saving me again from excessive complexity. I will stick with the resources I listed above.

I realize that one can walk el Camino without knowing any Spanish, and my existing vocabulary is sufficient for getting a bed and coffee. However, I think it will be more fun to understand some life of the places I will be passing by. Also, I am contemplating going to Antarctica next year and traveling in Argentina on the way there and back. This plan has elevated my interest in Spanish to a higher level.
