What did you enjoy spending money on this year?

Post by an_asker »

For me, it was travel. First time that I have gone on four major trips in one year. I don't do - and have never done - work-related travel, so traveling on vacation is big for me, both in terms of expenses and fun. While one of the trips was to visit friends and family, we did go to Niagara Falls, go on a cruise and visit Europe this year. That was definitely fun.

That was a gift that my wife bought with money that is her separate property under California law. I didn't spend anything on that watch. However, it is my favorite material possession.

A high end pressure cooker, electric salt and pepper grinders, and a new banjo.

I also spent a lot on a bunch of gizmos and gadgets, but they've mostly been sent to the Island of Misfit Toys already. One of my resolutions for 2015 is to stop doing that.

Good question.

Good question by our shipmate, and I did enjoy spending my money traveling this year. San Juan PR; Miami FL; Quito and Amazon Rain Forest in Ecuador; Lima, Cuzco, Sacred Valley, Machu Pichu, in Peru. The Alaska cruise including Inside Passage, Glacier Bay is looking good for May 2015, not solid yet, plenty of options.

Sadly, the best I could come up with was iPhone 6 and iPad Air. This was my first full year contracting and my original contract only ran through July, add that to I was considering retiring on Dec. 1 (which I decided against) and I spent the year saving like a maniac and I think it has made me grumpy or maybe dopey.

3 middle-of the line (white, if anyone's interested) appliances to replace the bottom-of -the- line appliances that came with my house and which lacked some of the amenities I've had for 50 + years. Looking forward to 1 more: Speed Queen's new top-loading washer with end-of-cycle signal, optional 2nd rinse and optional delayed start. Wooo Hooo. In the "no-go" stage of retirement mundane comforts can loom large. :)

I hope all of you are having a great holiday. Thanks for a great sharing forum. :beer

Expensive for me, but should last me for a while and it really does provide me with hours of entertainment and education.

favorite spending items:
travel, especially to visit family and friends
graduate school tuition for myself
treating friends who have been an awesome support to me since my husband died to a fancy dinner at my husband's favorite restaurant
my Macbook Pro (thanks to livesoft and everyone else who contributed to helping me make that decision)
supporting my favorite charities
emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix--I fully expect this will max out the $10K deductible on this year's HDHP but I am grateful to be alive and mending well
(by coincidence, this happened while I was out of town visiting my mother. The hospital where I had it done was awesome--Supreme Court Justices have used this hospital. It's actually good it happened while I was visiting my mother. I probably would have attempted to tough it out longer not realizing how seriously ill I might be, had my mother not intervened.)
appointment with my mom's doc (who is generally just awesome, fit me in quickly, and promptly sent me to the ER after examining me) It was nice to be able to tell him in person how much I appreciate the good care he has given to both my parents
really awesome fruits and vegetables
.

SCUBA certification and gear

My DG (dear girlfriend) and I went for a 3-dive boat last Saturday at Santa Cruz Island.
Very fun to get to enjoy one of her favorite things together.

Oh, and climbing gear for her, so that she can enjoy one of my favorite activities, also.

1. A slightly used 2013 Porsche Boxster after my 2002 S committed suicide on our wedding anniversary in September. (IMS bearing failure.)
2. A 2015 Porsche Macan S (ordered in late June, now in the US but not delivered yet) replacing an older VW Tiguan.
