Send text messages from PC to Cell Phone

Post by dbCooperAir »

I have been using Trillian for sending text messages from my PC to Cell phones but with the new version it has become unstable, I will get a few messages than it just stops receiving them.

Trillian was/is a great program as it ties together AIM, Window Live, Cell phones, Etc.

Anybody have any luck with another program for text from PC to Cell?

Thanks

To send a text message via email, you must use a SMS to email gateway. Just substitute a 10-digit cell number for ‘number’ for each carrier below:
■AT&T: number@txt.att.net
■T-Mobile: number@tmomail.net
■Verizon: number@vtext.com
■Sprint: number@messaging.sprintpcs.com or number@pm.sprint.com
■Virgin Mobile: number@vmobl.com
■Tracfone: number@mmst5.tracfone.com
■Metro PCS: number@mymetropcs.com
■Boost Mobile: number@myboostmobile.com
■Cricket: number@sms.mycricket.com
■Nextel: number@messaging.nextel.com
■Alltel: number@message.alltel.com
■Ptel: number@ptel.com
■Suncom: number@tms.suncom.com
■Qwest: number@qwestmp.com
■U.S. Cellular: number@email.uscc.net

Not as nice a little app but this will work until Trillian does an update

Thanks. Good to know!

I just tried it, with the AT&T version.

The text message arrived with a very weird "from" number, had my first name from the email address, and the Subj was just a partial of the longer Subject Header in the email.

Not bad, except that the "sending number" was so weird. But my first name showed in the brief shot BEFORE I needed to click, so that helped - for anyone who would know my "nickname" used in that email account, which is probably fine for most if not all purposes, if I'm using that email account.

(Note: There used to be a different way to do this to an AT&T cell number, and I tried that too, and nothing arrived.)

This isn't what you are asking, but it is related and might be of interest to any Apple users out there.

The ability to send and receive SMS text messages is built into OSX Yosemite. There is a new setting in ios 8 that allows SMS messages to be relayed from the iPhone to a Mac and vice versa. This way, if you are using the Mac, you don't have to switch to your iPhone to send/receive SMS messages. Prior to ios 8/OSX Yosemite, you could send iMessages to other Apple devices from Macs, but not SMS messages. Similarly, you can send receive SMS messages to/from an iPad, if you have an iPhone to do the relay. I've found it pretty handy since it was introduced.

I do this all the time. No need to know which carrier the other party is using (to lookup the email list above).

But this means you need to know the end user cellphone carrier!

I use it all the time and it works quite well. You can also download the google voice app and send texts or call from your google voice number. I use this for listing things on craigslist among other things.

I'm curious about this. I haven't made the switch from Mavericks, and I regularly use iMessage since I don't have a cell phone right now and most of my text recipients have iPhones. (Also use Google Voice and, on my kindle fire, textplus).

What is the advantage of sending SMS messages over iMessages? Does that mean you can text everyone w/ a phone whether or not they have an iPhone? (As you can see, I'm pretty ignorant of cellphone technology).

For this to work you actually need an iPhone in the mix. The SMS Relay feature does just that. It relays SMS (text) messages via your iPhone. So, if are using your Mac and you want to send a message to someone without an Apple product, you type and send your message like normal. The message is relayed from the Mac to the iPhone which then sends it out as a regular text message. SMS Relay does not buy you anything if you don't have an iPhone.

One advantage to sending messages over iMessage (to other iMessage users) is that those messages don't count against your text message limit on your cell plan (if you have a limit).

I use Skype to text from PC to phone. Replies come to my phone.

You need to set up Skype so it uses your cell phone number as your caller ID.

Thank you for the explanation, wageoghe.
I actually do have a hand-me-down iPhone4 that I use with Wi-Fi to enjoy certain apps. I just don't have cellular service attached to it.

another vote for Google Voice.
We ported our numbers earlier this year and haven't looked back.
And with (finally!) proper hangouts integration in September, it works for free VOIP phone calls from your cell phone as well.

If you look at second post in this thread
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=152693&p=2289325#p2289325
the poster talks about using Whatapp for international SMS
WhatsApp seems to be pretty popular for texting over wifi. I started using it to keep in touch with a friend overseas, as it seems to be a very popular texting app in Europe as well as the US.

I have Viber on my phone which, I think, is very similar to WhatsApp but the messages are delivered through the app versus a traditional text message (unless WhatsApp is different). The recipient in this case can't install any apps, unfortunately. Thanks for trying to help though.
