Anyone using Page Plus Cellular

Post by wtupden86 » Tue Nov 04, 2014 9:19 am

My contract with Verizon is about to end in about a week. I am considering switching to a prepaid cellular company called Page Plus Cellular( http://www.pagepluscellular.com )

They have a plan for $55 that includes unlimited talk, text, and 3GB of 4G data and run on the Verizon network. Right now I pay around $120 for talk, text, and 2GB of data with Verizon. I found a reseller that gives 10% off of the Page Plus service ( http://www.prepayrefill.com ) which would make my bill run around $49.50 a month.

The savings of around $70 a month seems like a no brainer, but I just have no experience with prepaid cellular companies. Does anyone have experience with Page Plus, and if so, is the service comparable to Verizon?

I have no experience with Verizon directly but have been with Page Plus for 3 yrs. I've been very happy with their service. They recently started offering 4G service if that matters.
Kitty Wireless (a PP reseller) will be rolling out some new plans in the near future that differ from the basic Page Plus plans.

Here's her new offerings:

$7.95 - 50 minutes, 50 messages, 5 mb of data
$9.95 - 150 minutes, 150 messages, 15mb of data
$11.95 - 250 minutes, 250 messages, 25mb of data
$14.95 - 350 minutes, 300 messages, 35mb of data
$19.95 - 300 minutes, 300 messages, 300mb of data
$24.95 - 400 minutes, 400 messages, 400mb of data
$29.95 - 750 minutes, 750 messages, 750mb of data

At the recommendation of several Bogleheads, I switched from Verizon to Page Plus in March. I am very satisfied with the price and coverage. I did use Kitty to help with the porting process from Verizon to Page Plus - that process went very smoothly.

I don't use a lot of phone time or texts, so the $7.95 plan looks good for me. But, I use a lot of data when away from WiFi. With the $80 replenishment card, that would buy 800 mb of data, which seems very costly. Would Tracfone work better for me?

I believe you could do better (at least cheaper) on Tracfone for your needs. You can get a 60 min/90 days service card (triples to 180 min/ 180 texts/ 180 MB data on smartphones) at callingmart.com for about $18 (after their 7% discount they usually run at the beginning of each month), which is essentially a rate of $6 per month. If 60 MB of data per month is not enough, Tracfone sells separate data cards at very reasonable rates (the 750 MB card is $20).

Can anyone specifically comment on coverage with Page Plus, coming from Verizon?

Verizon is by far the best coverage for me, and every time I look, I'd only save ~$12/month, and am not sure I want to take the risk of loosing out on a solid plan (grandfathered unlimited data plan with $20 discount and line access discount, ~$67/month). Not willing to take the plunge, yet.

I had a similar plan at Verizon for about $70/month and was also grandfathered in on the unlimited plan. I am fairly sure that grandfathered unlimited data ends when you eventually update your phone. I switched to Pageplus about 4 years ago and pay $30 for 1200 minutes, 3000 texts and 500mb of data. This saved me $40 month and works for me. I really wanted to keep the Verizon coverage and I have had no problems on this front. Up until recently, Pageplus did not support 4G and I had to have a newly purchased Galaxy S3 flashed to work on Pageplus, but as mentioned above flashing will no longer be required as they now support 4G.

This is the PP plan I use. Works well.

I also use Page Plus via Kitty Wireless. My bill is $40.00/month for unlimited talk and text with some data. Data isn't much of a concern for me as I don't watch movies on the phone. No problems to report. My credit card is billed automatically every month. The cell phone you use for Verizon is most likely OK. You would just need to port your number to Page Plus if you want to use the same number.

the kittywireless plans are coming soon. they have not officially dropped as an official service, undergoing testing. also keep in mind the new kittywireless offering will not be through pageplus. i think they will keep the pageplus reseller service but this at least the way i'm reading it, a foray of their own using prepaid verizon as the backend.

I have been on PP for 4 or 5 years and am very happy with it. I am on the $29.95 (Talk n Text 1200) plan. I use PinCheap dot com for refills.

I am also very curious about this. I remember reading that services such as Straight Talk and Page Plus utlize Verizon's prepaid towers. I have always wondered to what extent, if any, would this differ from Verizon's regular network.

I also agree that Verizon's coverage, although not the cheapest, provides the best coverage in my area. I think the monthly savings by switching to Page Plus from my Verizon family plan would be about $40. It's worth it to me only if the coverage is as good.

My wife and I have both used page plus and verizon. We can't tell a difference in coverage.

Here are the Verizon coverage maps. If you click the "prepaid" button, you can see the difference between postpaid and prepaid. Page Plus uses the prepaid map, afaik.

If you're ok with Sprint's coverage, take a look at Freedompop. They offer a free 500MB data plan. Their voice/text are all VoIP, and not very high quality. Install Google Hangouts instead, and run your voice/text through them. The quality will be a lot better, but voice/text will count down against your data limit.
