Woman at War

Set in Iceland, a middle aged woman wages war against an
aluminum smelting plant by repeatedly sabotaging the power
system. The film comes across as part drama, part parody, and
part comedy. The story is a little far-fetched but the rugged
Icelandic landscape is captivating.

Charade, on Amazon Prime.

This is a classic thriller staring Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant, and Walter Matthau.
And James Coburn and George Kennedy. What a cast!

I remember liking this movie very much. Will have to re-watch it. It's been a while.

Thanks for reminding me of this one!
Just (re)watched it on Amazon. It's nice when a movie you remember as being very good doesn't disappoint.

"The Mustang", a new release directed by Robert Redford about a convict's participation in a wild horse training program.

It's probably not going to see a very wide release, so opportunities to see it may be limited until it's available online.

I enjoyed it very much; Matthias Schoenaerts (an actor I was not familiar with) played the convict in a powerful performance.

Dr No, maybe the first Bond movie. Blue Ray quality, still sharp. Sean Connery was at his best.

Fred Zinnemann's The Sundowners (1960) starring Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr. I've seen it before, but caught it again recently on one of the movie channels.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, $5.99 HD rental on Amazon prime. I thought this movie was very creative, much different than what I was expecting. I liked it.

We watched End Game yesterday. I was browsing last night to see if any of online review echoed my view about the movie and nop zip nada - all reviewers everything that I read were all going gaga over it. Without revealing any further - I give it A minus. I gave CA Civil War/Black Panther/Infinity War all perfect A.

On a 10 hour long plane ride back from Europe, I watched a movie called 55 Steps. It's the history of mental health rights in America staring Hillary Swank and Jeffrey Tambor. It was really well done and I don't know why it didn't get more attention. Made me cry :(

A Star is Born with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. Also made me cry. :(

Perhaps I was a little bit tired, but I truly enjoyed them both.

A Shot in the Dark, on Amazon Prime.

I think that this is the best Inspector Clouseau Pink Panther comedy, and stars Peter Sellers and Elke Sommer.

My son and I watched Avengers: Endgame the other day. My son loved it; I was mostly disappointed. Yes, it had plenty of stirring moments and one-liners, but I couldn't ignore the problems with the story. I know that comic book movies don't have to be anywhere near realistic, but they should have some internal coherence. It just seems like so many things were ignored or handwaved away.

Green Book - I tend to like most things with Viggo Mortensen and this was no exception. I ended up doing a lot of reading about the real Green Book and real life characters from the movie so I was both entertained and educated.

The Brood - this is an older Canadian horror movie with hilariously bad action sequences, but it was entertaining nonetheless. The story has kind of has a Rosemary's Baby vibe to it.

I felt their characterization choices have almost ruined a couple of the characters. The tone shifts were off, the plot choices ridiculous. Hard to believe the same writer/director sets made Infinity War. Makes me suspect studio interference.

My take is more that they wrote themselves into a corner. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say that the central premise (i.e., undoing what the villain did in the previous movie) was so problematic I couldn't get past it. The unintended consequences of that had to have been horrific, but we're required to just believe that all is now well.

We watched "Andhadhun" on Netflix this weekend. It's a Bollywood movie recommended by my Indian friend. It is soooooo good!!! I cannot recommend it enough!

It's a thriller full of twists and turns. You don't know what's the truth until literally the last second -- and even then, I'm not sure I know exactly what happened... It has a great plot, great characters and fantastic acting! Suitable for friend get-together, date night, or family. Other than very young kids, everyone will enjoy it!
Excellent movie, glad you posted about it, glad I tried it. It was great to watch something NEW that is based in a totally different culture with concepts you won't find in American society.

Another thing I really enjoyed was how it takes you down one street, the makes a sudden left or right that you NEVER EXPECTED to somewhere that doesn't exist in American movies, and it just takes the movie to a whole new level! Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse, surprise! they do! :D

Maybe off topic?: A while back I watched a series from Spain (English subs) called Money Heist, and again, not your typical limited American Mentality. It takes you down avenues we don't have in our culture, so I found it very interesting and a breath of fresh air. 2 seasons down, one coming up soon. (Sorry, I know this is a movie thread, but I just included it because of it's international appeal) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6468322/

“For the Ones We Loved”
A French film with many short stories about awful romantic situations. It starts with a new husband exiting the church after the wedding ceremony and driving away with his lover in front of the wedding guests. The new wife does not cancel the party. And the guests go on to eat, drink, dance, and talk. And they talk about peculiar love things that happened to them or someone they know.

I liked it a lot,

Last week's movie was THE COMMUTER. It was very formulaic and quite predictable.

I watched ON DEMAND on a long Southwest Airlines Flight for FREE. While the movie was rather lame, the technology was excellent. There were no stops in the video and no buffering.

Avengers Endgame

(avoiding spoilers as much as possible)

Positives
- emotionally satisfying, concludes a number of narrative lines
- character of Tony Stark well portrayed
- exciting - held my interest for (over) 3 hours
- some excellent set pieces

Negatives
- many of the most interesting characters are marginalized - Capt Marvel, Dr Strange
- at least one of the battle scenes goes on so long it is boring (standard critique of Marvel movies)
- I got bored of Thor
- no Martin Freeman (that I noticed) - the opportunity was lost to pay homage to Sherlock by putting him and Benedict Cumberbatch (Dr Strange) on screen together
- structure is formulaic
- I think it's fair to say the attempt to forefront the women heroes does not work particularly well
- usual problems with all time travel stories - in the end one resorts to mumbo-jumbo to get out of the logical paradoxes
- some of the scenes are contrived & coincidental (thinking the one with Steve Rogers & Tony Stark together on a mission in particular)
- if you haven't seen all the movies some of it makes little sense - you definitely need to have seen Avengers Infinity War and it would help to have seen Avengers Civil War, Captain America The Winter Soldier and Captain Marvel

I'd give it a solid B+. The difficult task of ending the series was achieved honourably.

I think this is all fair.

A weak script bolstered by some strong characterisations and some great set pieces.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and VIle. It covers the courtroom hearings and escapes of Ted Bundy. Zac Efron did a pretty good job of portraying him. It wasn't quite what I expected, but for a Netflix movie it was pretty good.

Avengers: Endgame. Perhaps the greatest moviegoing experience of my life.
Yes! I thought it'd be amazing, but it was 10x more!
+1000 DW and I saw it twice. As a huge Marvel movies fan, it was a very satisfying conclusion to the 21 movies that started with Iron Man in 2008.
I've seen it 3 times now and stand by my initial assessment. I actually think Infinity War is a better movie, but Endgame was a better experience in the theaters.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and VIle. It covers the courtroom hearings and escapes of Ted Bundy. Zac Efron did a pretty good job of portraying him. It wasn't quite what I expected, but for a Netflix movie it was pretty good.
I remember Lori Anderson (musician and wife of Lou Reed) did a documentary on the human face.

She showed a picture of a young man in his 30s, leather jacket, short hair and asked us his likely profession: "architect? Lawyer? Sociology lecturer?"

It was of course, Theodore Bundy.

Reading in the Guardian today that even "experienced" lie detectors don't have a much better chance than evens (50:50) of detecting lying from face and body language. Those who claim better than are not, generally, tested under controlled conditions.

And that's how Bundy did it. The largest serial killer (the OK City bomber was a mass murderer i.e. single event) in American history (that we know about). Probably over 300 deaths, almost certainly over 100.

As a pure sociopath he found it easy to manipulate and deceive. American Psycho style. Lacked any moral calculus at all - meaningless to him as a concept, people are just instrumental tools to his will. And his affluent middle class origins meant he fit in easily into society - many serial killers are distinctly odd and/or anti-social. The underlying principle is similar with fraudsters like Madoff (not to rate their crimes on the same moral scale, but to note the similarities in how they work). Or Hitler and any number of his cronies - a fringe politician of mediocre intellect (but incredibly astute about the psychology of the crowd) catapulted to the head of a powerful nation, from which he triggers the bloodiest war (so far) in human history*.

Had Bundy been born into a poorer family he might have been detected much sooner - he would not have had the professional classes' armor of self assurance and tacit assumption by society that they are lawful.

There is, apparently, a recent documentary about Bundy with films of him being interviewed. And I know of one woman who saw it, and commented "they stitched up an innocent man". She was so taken by his manner.

* You'd get back to the 30 Years War to find similar levels of devastation in western Europe. Eastern Europe? I suspect the Mongol invasions of the 1200s.

In human history the Taiping Rebellion in mid 19th century China killed 20-40 millions which would be of a similar percentage as WW2 on a smaller world population then. Probably the Mongol conquest of China, the Middle East and Russia over 3 generations. The devastating wars & plagues of Rome & Persia in the late 500s and early 600s.

"Walking with the Enemy" on Hulu. Set in Hungry under the Nazi's during WWII and based on a true story. Quite graphic at times.
