Bridge of Spies: Fascinating look into a Spy exchange of a Russian spy for Francis Gary Powers. Fine performances by Tom Hanks and others and spot on direction by Steven Spielberg

Zootopia - What fun! Wonderful animation (detailed and subtle facial expressions and correct movements for each and every animal), clever dialogue, and the perfect ending, especially if you remembered who never made it off the train at the beginning. I watched the sloths scene several times and wonder if an entire film could be done of them alone? Maybe, if viewers can slow down enough, long enough.

Flight - Great performance by Denzel Washington. Good movie, good ending.

Midnight in Paris - Enjoyable throughout; the right ending, which I thought was foreshadowed the first time these two appeared together.

Also have seen and recommend: Money Monster (Jody Foster directed; George Clooney and Julia Roberts very good); Hail, Caesar! (Coen brothers).

One review I read quotes the "experts" in England saying the series is historically accurate. Don't know specifically about the "kneeling" question.
Does anyone know when the second series (episodes 11-20) will become available to us common folks?

Have plowed through a couple of TV shows recently:

The Man in the High Castle It's 1962. Axis powers have won WWII, the US west of the Rockies is controlled by the Japanese Imperial Army, everything to the east is controlled by Nazi Germany. Really intense. First season is a bit of a slow burn, but things start to pick up in Season 2. The alternative history I find to be extremely fascinating.

The Crown Historical drama about the British royal family, picks up around the time Queen Elizabeth II ascends the throne. Great acting, in particular John Lithgow as Winston Churchill is just superb.

Also over the past week I read The Hunger Games trilogy for the first time, so am re-watching the movies. Now realize how much of a snoozefest Mockingjay Part 1 was. Glad I watched the movies first.

I found it interesting and entertaining. The acting was superb.

Musicians will find it particularly interesting, and the NYC street scenes and classic cars and taxis are great.

about the defamation lawsuit which historian David Irving brought against Emory U History Professor D. Lipstadt for her calling him a "Holocaust Denier". Irving was a serious historian who became something much more fringe.

It was argued in English courts (where the burden of proof is placed upon the defendant in a defamation trial, not the accuser), and is based on the real transcripts.

It avoids any reconstruction of the Holocaust (but they do visit Auschwitz at one point).

I found myself moved to tears at some points. Timothy Spall should get an Oscar for his portrayal of David Irving.

The movie manages to make the "good guys" not totally likeable, without eliciting any sympathy for Irving.

I found this, as a non Jew, to be a very moving and important movie.

Zootropolis?

A brilliant film, and I lost track of the cultural references; Breaking Bad; The Godfather; Chinatown etc. Worth it for "Don't call me cute" alone.

I don't know what kids make of it, but as an adult I was captivated-- almost as good as Monsters, Inc or the Incredibles, and up there with Wall-E.

Worth reading the Philip K Dick novel, then. Which is very interesting in itself-- not predictable where it goes.

I Googled the topic of the historical accuracy of the film, "The Crown", and the first three references (there are many more) all state that the film is quite accurate by and large. A few exceptions are for example the character of Churchill's young female secretary but most other episodes and especially the details are accurate. The filmmakers went into great expense and trouble to research all these facts and look at a variety of sources. Do you have information to the contrary? I think it is a great film and for me the best I have seen in the last couple of years (acting, scenery, photography, plot), so I am somewhat defensive about it !

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? -- a play by Edward Albee, at the Washington Ford's Theater. It's a very powerful play, highly emotional, psychologically rich and surprising. Of course, I knew it was a classic, but there are many classics that I have not seen yet. I am glad that I saw this one.

I read her book when it first came out. I wanted to see the movie when it first came out but never got around to it. I placed a hold on the DVD at my library about a month ago and presently stand about 60th in the queue.

I saw this as a play put on by some group in my college. I then saw it in a movie theater when it first came out.

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were very powerful actors. Somehow they could really chew the scenery (and each other!) without going over the top. They make you believe -- and cringe. I thought Sandy Dennis was also amazing -- an innocent, vulnerable, pregnant lamb locked in a cage with hungry tigers.

Long after, I bought the DVD but it took me a couple of years to get up the nerve to watch it! It is overwhelming.

Edit: I just looked this up on IMDB. Do you know how IMD give a list of "Plot Keywords?" They list 153 for this movie! I don't think I ever saw anything else with more than a dozen or so. George and Martha ring a LOT of bells!

If I take your meaning, we laughed out loud at that scene. The quick, dawning look on Claire Foy's face was priceless.

Do I believe it actually happened? No, but I take the dramatic point that they had a pretty good marriage apart from the tensions of monarchy on her personal life, and this was a way to show that quickly.

Very much agree. It equals one of my all-time favorites, Wall-E, in many ways - the dark-theme, big-issue storylines, the beautifully detailed animation, the well-developed characters whether animals or machines, the endless small but humorous and endearing touches such as the sloth just beginning to react to the fox's joke, and Wall-E meticulously lining up his "new" treads on a rack, or looking for exactly the right spot to store more junk he's brought home.

Watching the sloths, I thought it's not just that they move so slooooowly, but that the rest of us move so fast, which may say more about us than them.

I'm always a sucker for anime and cartoon. This one is from France with English sub, about an aristocratic young girl who overcame her background and frigid surrounding to find her calling.

At 80 minutes, it was a pleasure and a short escape to the North Pole. It's a children's classic without the Disney commercialism or formula. Music is poignant at times, but no singing (please!).

A Man Called Ove

A curmudgeon senior citizen in Sweden fails on several occasions to
commit suicide because someone is always interrupting him with a
need. Flashbacks of his past show his deceased wife was the only
bright spot in his adult life but he reluctantly learns there can be
meaning in his life now and his neighbors help him to have a more
positive outlook.
This movie is billed as a "dark comedy" but I found it more satirical
and zany. Nice film.

Yes, and it's so well done it feels as if we're not just watching another scene, but entering another world, one where we're forced to slow down to catch up on what's going on. I wouldn't mind living in that world just for a change, just for awhile.

I don't like kids movies generally but.. Brilliant.

Reminded me of Wallace and Gromit in a way too (except slicker) Aardman like doing those sly cinema references in their films as well.

Bonus for Canadians: see if you recognize the male news anchors voice. My wife did right away.

Finished watching the new Amazon original series Sneaky Pete. Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad is a co-creator and also stars in it.

Great show. It's like the classic Paul Newman/Robert Redford movie The Sting (which the show even references directly at one point) but darker, like the TV show Fargo. Really enjoyed it, and now begins the long wait for season 2.

I saw the ads for it on TV. I've seen it several times in the past so didn't bother to tune in again. Great movie though!

I did think the ad was clever. It repeated the same 10 seconds or so over and over. (I Got You Babe!)

AMC did that this year! Groundhog Day is arguably my favorite movie, and I decided to record one of the airings and watch it again. It's brilliant.

I saw La La Land in December and Hidden Figures this weekend. Very, very different movies which I thoroughly enjoyed. I think Hidden Figures should be required viewing for anyone who understands English and can afford a place to sleep. I have a slight aversion to movies that are "inspiring" or "uplifting" or "heartwarming", but Hidden Figures made it through my defenses by using superb acting and a simple, direct approach to tell an amazing story.

For me it acted as a gateway to a healthier diet and lifestyle. Also got a juicer after seeing the film, and used it for a year with good results. But became increasingly convinced of the importance of dietary fiber, so now I'm using the blender instead.

I watched the movie again too. It's one of my favorites.

One of my favorite lines is the second day Phil Connors (Bill Murray) wakes up and goes downstairs for coffee and on the way out of the door he responds to a query:

Will you be checking out today?

I'd say the chance of departure is 75-80 percent.

I watched the actual 131st ceremony on Feb. 2 (of this year) too. The PA television network carries the whole ceremony. Much larger crowd at Gobbler's Knob (in the thousands they said) then was shown in the movie. I wonder if the movie had an impact on the attendance over the years. I know it's stupid. But it's entertaining.

Good film, I saw it too about a year ago. This painting was recently in the news again as
Oprah Winfrey was revealed to have owned its sister painting for the last ten years and recently sold it for $150 million, for a tidy profit. It's not the same painting as in the film (Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I) but it's by the same artist (Klimt) and of the same subject (Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II).

Saw The Great Wall today. It reminded me of a series of fantasy that I really enjoyed when I was younger, some of which were written by John Wick (not the Keanu Reeves character, whose sequel I have yet to see). I really enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would (I expected it to be fun and for that to be about it).

Yes, very good movie about business and perseverance, Kroc outsmarted the McDonalds brothers and did not honor the verbal agreement to give them 1%,of all proceeds.
They settled for $1 million dollars each, a good chunk of change back in the 50s but no where near what 1% of revenue that McDonals generates.
