Main Street

Great cast(Colin Firth, Ellen Burstyn, Patricia Clarkson, Orlando Bloom)
in a story of should we or should we not allow a hazardous waste treatment
facility in our economically depressed community in order to revitalize it.
It is hard to get a final fix on the point of view trying to be expressed. I
was left with an ambiguous ending saying basically it is probably safe but
accidents could happen. Has the ambience of a made for TV movie.
Again, great cast but mediocre story. 6/10

I saw Sully just to watch Tom Hanks and was not disappointed. Because of Hanks, the movie was fantastic, even if not quite factual.

"The Shallows"

Incredibly dumb, but I knew that going in. I am a huge sucker for movies in the ocean.

If you can get past how horrendously stupid the plot is they actually did some cool stuff in the movie. The end made no sense whatsoever, but overall it was entertaining.

I guess it was just a really, really bad movie that was kinda fun to watch.

Café Society

This movie was written and directed by Woody Allen and is
rife with Allen's brand of quirky humor. The time setting is
the 1930s and alternates between New York and California
following the life of a young man and his family as he comes
up in the world. Nice movie laced with enjoyable music from
the period.
Two other Woody Allen movies from recent years I would also
recommend are "Magic in the Moonlight" and "Midnight in Paris".

They should never attempt to remake a Steve McQueen movie. They failed with Thomas Crown and didn't learn their lesson. What's next, trying to recapture the perfection of Bullitt? THAT would be blasphemy.

Embrace of the Serpent (2015, Colombia) From IMDB: The story of the relationship between Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and last survivor of his people, and two scientists who work together over the course of 40 years to search the Amazon for a sacred healing plant.

Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards, and also won awards at Cannes and others. I recommend it.

Someone remade Psycho too, and it was a shot-for-shot duplication of Hitchcock's work, including the camera angles. A complete waste of time.

Watched the Amanda Knox documentary on Netflix last night.

To me, the film was a dry presentation of the facts and a description of yet another bungled police investigation. I felt no sympathy for Amanda or her boyfriend, but after watching this film, I don't think she did it.

Complete Unknown

A woman goes through life assuming different identities
and roles. She encounters an old boyfriend after disappearing
from his life 15 years earlier. Offbeat, subtle, and intriguing.

I thought the remake of "The Blob" (1958, 1988) was quite good.

"Sicario" with Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin...(forget the name of the female actor)

How someone can make a border drug war movie so boring is beyond me...it was the story line, not the acting, the acting was fine.

Considering the movie "Traffic" was built along these lines, I was surprised. Turned it off after about an hour.

I just picked up an old DVD to watch, for pennies - "Power" with Gene Hackman, Richard Gere, Denzel Washington, Julie Christie - 1986. Seemed appropriate given the current news.

Caught The Man From Reno (2014) on Netflix.

Interesting low budget/independent noirish mystery.
Features a clash of cultures--Japan/US, set in SF/NorCal.
Probably needs to be viewed twice to fully grasp.

The Social Network

This movie about Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, has been
around since 2010 but it was only recently that I viewed it.
I have read that it was a mix of fact and fiction (which is typical
of most "based on true events" movies) but nonetheless I enjoyed
the movie. Great casting, each actor really seem to fit their role
in a believable way.

Algorithms, on netflix (2011). A documentary on the use of algorithms in your daily life. I thought it was fascinating. Anyone with a scientific, engineering, software, or general interest in math should watch this. It's highly educational, especially for students.

Those who remember the ancient times of early software development (1960's) will get a kick out of this show.

Watched Sweeney Todd (2007) last night. I'm so-so on both Burton and Depp, but figured I'd give it a chance because I liked the combo in Sleepy Hollow. I'm not huge on horror films, but like watching quasi horror this time of year. I thought it was pretty good.

It was a typical action film, but there were a few Triumph Street Triples in it so there were a few bonus points awarded.

Last Sunday night on Netflix, I watched A Conversation with Gregory Peck. A Conversation With Gregory Peck is a 1999 film directed by documentary filmmaker Barbara Kopple. Kopple followed the actor as he embarked on a live speaking tour throughout the United States reflecting on his life and career. The film also looks at Peck's home life with his family, as well as his public appearances where he meets such notable individuals as then President of the United States Bill Clinton, then French President Jacques Chirac, and filmmaker Martin Scorsese. A Conversation With Gregory Peck was part of the PBS documentary series American Masters and was screened out of competition at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.

I watched this when PBS first aired it. It's okay, but nothing special.

Remarkably well done, funny, and insightful,... with no dialogue!

The scene with the sheep in disguise in a tea room, trying to blend in without knowing how to behave, was the funniest thing I have seen on film in years. A brilliant set piece worthy of Chaplin.
Shaun the Sheep, on Amazon Prime. I agree this is a fun and entertaining movie. The "tea room" was indeed hilarious, as it seemed to be a blend between The Three Stooges and Animal House.

It's definitely a family movie and has a few scenes for the "older" (hint: Beatles) generation.

FWIW, I thought that Good Kill (2014) with Ethan Hawke was much better at conveying the corrosive effects of drone warfare on those conducting it. 'Eye' felt like a puppet show in comparison.

I second the mention of "The Gift", really enjoyed that.

Two recent ones we liked:

Swiss Army Man - offbeat, cute indy film - avoid if scatological humor is an issue
Breach - we didn't know it was based on a true story until the end credits so it was suspenseful for us

The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996) Woody Harrelson, Edward Norton, Courtney Love. Directed by Milos Forman, this movie documents the business life and legal troubles of Larry Flynt as portrayed by Woody Harrelson. This is one of my favorite movies, and I've seen it about a half dozen times. It has some of the same character actors as other Forman movies. The basis for my love of it is really two-fold. First, it's about the American Dream and how it can be achieved even from less than savory beginnings. Second, the religious leaders who want to censor pornography and Flynt's persistent fight to stand firm for freedom of speech represents the ongoing struggle for the interpretation in society for civil liberties in this country. Harrelson is at times hilarious, Love does an excellent job, and the movie can also be heartbreaking. (4.5/5)

I recently watched X-Men: Apocalypse. I must say, it was worse than I expected. When the best part of the movie is cribbed from the previous film, you know something is wrong. Still not as bad as Batman V Superman which made absolutely no sense, but X-Men was still lackluster.
