Over the past six months, I've watched The Jungle Book (1967) at least 20 times with my infant son. It's free on YouTube and helps ease the bedtime transition from fussy baby to sleeping baby. Have to give the movie credit for holding up extremely well after all these years and viewings--I notice something new and clever in each viewing.

The Babadook (2014)
Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her 'out of control' 6 year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel's dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called 'The Babadook' turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he's been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son's behaviour, is forced to medicate him. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real. (C) IFC
I'm really looking forward to Whiplash. I have been a big fan of J.K. Simmons since Oz. He is amazing. He even makes the Farmers Insurance commercials interesting.Posted by Sans SouliersWhiplash - holy cow, J.K. Simmons! This guy! Wow, whew...
I'm also looking forward to Birdman.
The Babadook is excellent. A very impressive debut by director Jennifer Kent.
Birdman and Whiplash are also very good. And check out Nightcrawler.
I'm looking forward to Inherent Vice.
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Just watched Boyhood. I loved it! It really brought home the message how we feel so alone growing up but in reality we are all experience many of the same things. I also loved watching these kids grow up in front of my eyes. In that respect it reminded me of the Up Series (documentary).
All the actors were excellent but for me, the gem in this film was Lorelei Linklater, she was a sassy cute little girl who became such a poised young lady. I just found out she is the director's daughter in real life. Excellent movie that also makes you realize how fast life goes by.
jginseattle thanks for the recommendations, Nightcrawler looks really interesting.

I just finished watching Upstairs Downstairs last night. This is the 2012-2013 BBC production that continues (somewhat) the seventies series.
I thought it was really interesting, even in comparison to the excellent seventies series. Unfortunately, the BBC canceled the series after Series Two. Jean Marsh, who was an integral part of this production and the seventies production, had a heart attack and then a stroke and could not continue on a regular basis. This was the reason BBC gave for canceling the series.

If you're looking for a holiday movie you may have missed, I'd recommend "The Lemon Drop Kid" from 1951. It's a 'Bob Hope movie'; so if you don't like Bob Hope, you probably won't like this movie. The first 20 minutes or so take place at a Florida horse racetrack but then moves to New York where Hope has the three weeks before Christmas to raise money to pay off a bet... Bit parts by William Frawley, Tor Johnson, and others are fun to watch. It also introduces the song "Silver Bells" - sung by Hope and Marilyn Maxwell.

The Wolf of Wall Street, with Leonardo di Caprio. I loved it. My wife hated it so much she didn't even like to be in the adjacent room overhearing it, and is seriously annoyed with me for thinking it was funny.
Brilliant direction, brilliant acting. After watching the scene where di Caprio's character (Jordan Belfort) demonstrates how he can sweet-talk a rich guy into buying stock from him--building trust with the guy over the phone while simultaneously mocking him, making faces, and snide side remarks to the group of people clustered around the desk listening--I've thought just maybe I shouldn't own any stocks at all.
By the way, was I the only one who thought the "Mark Hanna" character(?) played by Matthew McConaughey
looked like Bill Gross?

I don't remember it that well but I do remember my son completely in hysterical laughter over the scenes where there is a parade of elephants and the first one stops suddenly and all the ones behind it collide.market timer wrote:Over the past six months, I've watched The Jungle Book (1967) at least 20 times with my infant son. Which reminds me: I still think the Pink Elephants sequence from Dumbo is simply astonishing. I first saw it when I was five years old and, uh, it holds up six decades later. Not only the animation, but the song itself. Is there a name for the metrical and musical device, that interrupted flow of meter?

Ah, that's Colonel Hathi's March. That scene initially terrified my son. He'd start crying and move away from the iPad anytime he'd hear the elephants trumpeting through the jungle. Seems hard to predict the reactions of infants to this stuff.nisiprius wrote:I don't remember it that well but I do remember my son completely in hysterical laughter over the scenes where there is a parade of elephants and the first one stops suddenly and all the ones behind it collide.market timer wrote:Over the past six months, I've watched The Jungle Book (1967) at least 20 times with my infant son. I watched a BBC production of Daniel Deronda adapted by Andrew Davies from the George Eliot novel. This probably is my favorite George Eliot novel. The production did seem somewhat condensed at four episodes of about fifty minutes each.
Last night, I watched Tell No One, a French film based on a Harlen Coben novel. Someone here several days ago recommended it. It was very good.

I love going to the movies at a real movie theatre the best because when I watch movies at home I am always getting up to do the laundry or empty the dishwasher or do the million things that need to be done. When I am in the theatre and the lights dim I can just get absorbed in the movie. love it!! We saw Wild this weekend. A bit more slow-moving than I expected but it did make me think and be grateful for things in my life so I enjoyed it. Looking forward to all the good movies opening over holiday and plan to see "Unbroken" . I do think all the posts on "Wolf of Wall Street" are hysterical coming from bogleheads!! Pretty much the antithesis of this forum.

Finally caught The Right Stuff. Those Flyboys/astronauts are amazing, sort of like race car drivers with a college degree. It was rather long so I watched it over 2 nights. Though Alan Yeager/Sam Shepard was not an astronaut but he broke the sound barrier; I like his character in the movie as well as john Glenn/Ed Harris.

I think I will try and make it out for American Sniper, or perhaps the next day since I wont get done with Christmas till late. I cant remember the last time I went to a theater, ok, I lied. Last move I saw out was Lone Survivor. I use to go out weekly for movies, but over the past 5ish years it takes one heck of a movie to get me out.toto238 wrote:I'm considering going to see "The Interview" in one of the select theatres it will be showing in on Christmas. For me, The Wolf of Wall Street had way too many scenes of men in suits behaving like sex crazed animals toward women hired to pretend that they enjoyed such behavior, not to mention the degradation of The Wolf himself from principled husband and family man to a disgusting parody of a Wall Street stud admired by his male colleagues; too disgusting for my tastes.
There were probably some funny parts, but I don't remember them.

As George Clooney said it that there are 2 kinds of companies; those that were hacked and those did not even know they were.
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
I see your point, but being a life long Staten Islander, this is not as far fetched as you might think. Back in the 80s, I knew several guys that were barley literate and went right to Wall Street from High School and were making way too much money for kids that age. Most would have probably became gangsters if they didn't go to Wall Street and needless to say they behaved very much like the Cave Men-thugs did in that movie. I was friends with some of these types and got to witness a few of their antics (a lot of drugs and paid for women). I remember one bought his Mother who was probably around 48 to 50 at the time a house and a brand new Hummer. Thinking back, I can't believe I ever associated with these types of characters, but I too was young and foolish.denismurf wrote:For me, The Wolf of Wall Street had way too many scenes of men in suits behaving like sex crazed animals toward women hired to pretend that they enjoyed such behavior, not to mention the degradation of The Wolf himself from principled husband and family man to a disgusting parody of a Wall Street stud admired by his male colleagues; too disgusting for my tastes.

Recent Movies:
The Bad:
Fury --- a pointless shoot em up war movie. Completely unbelievable. Some good actors wasted.
Guardians of the Galaxy --- only got part way through this one. When green horned aliens begin talking in Southern accents, I have to pull the plug. Another movie where the
acting just gets in the way of the special effects.
The Interview --- A frat boy movie that aspires at it's best moments to sophomoric humor. A complete waste of time. For every 30 jokes, one hits.
The OK:
The Skeleton Twins: Interesting black comedy about a couple of grown up twins who have found out that life isn't quite what it cracked up to be. Two good former Saturday
Night Live regulars carry the enterprise.
12 Years As A Slave: Good acting. Monotonous with the depiction of the unrelenting evil ... faithful to the book.
The Good:

Selma
Best movie I've seen this year, and I've seen quite a few since early September. If Selma doesn't move you, you have a hard heart.
I would imagine the only movie I haven't seen this year that I might think is better would be Boyhood. I have a friend Paul who is a true movie fanatic. Every year he sits through 7-8 movies per day for several days at the Toronto film festival. His wife likes movies, but she doesn't go to Toronto with him. She can't sit thru movie after movie day after day. Anyway Paul says Boyhood is the best movie he has seen this century and as far as I can tell it's the frontrunner for best picture Oscar this year. But Boyhood is definitely a one of a kind movie, which may not be to everyone's taste.
Other movies I look forward to seeing, but haven't yet seen, include (in no particular order)
Unbroken
Mr Turner
Into the Woods
American Sniper
Wild
Inherent Vice
A Most Violent Year
Big Eyes

IMO The Imitation Game is a very good movie which should have been even better, given the subject matter. It looks like the movie had a limited budget, given that the sea battles looked like they were filmed in somebody's bathtub with a fog machine on.
Turing was an amazing person. For example, he was a great natural athlete and a world class long distance runner. The movie only hints at that part of his life.

Flying Down to Rio
Sumptuous and beautifully photographed, with high production values and several clever process scenes giving an unusually good impression of Rio de Janeiro, but the dancing on airplane wings is a bit contrived, and in the end the film is redeemed only by the fresh pairing of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, sadly only appearing in supporting roles. Let's hope these two are paired together again in the future, and made the central players.
Still, a welcome distraction from Roosevelt's [political remarks deleted]

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
A number of people have praised it and it's on my "to-watch" list. Not that posthumous recognition does Turing any good, but I think it is wonderful to see him getting something approaching the respect he deserves. A pity the Nobel prize cannot be awarded posthumously. When I was a grad student in biology I was for a while intrigued by embryology and the problems of morphogenesis, and one day I was tracking down references and came to a paper in, I think it was Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, giving--I think they were hand-simulations done with desk calculators, I'm not sure--and some two-dimensional differential equations, showing how interacting nonlinear oscillators could give rise to some biological-like development patterns. And the author was "A. M. Turing." And I'm saying to myself, whoa! That can't possibly be the same guy, can it? And of course it was.madbrain wrote:I just saw the imitation game - really good movie, about an amazing person.bobcat2 wrote: I assume you mean "The Imitation Game" and not "The Imagination Game".

The math was and is beyond me, but I see that (of course!) the paper is online: The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis and contains among other things this picture of a simulation result:

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
I watched Albatross this morning on Netflix, starring Jessica Brown Findlay, Felicity Jones, Julia Ormond, and Sebastian Koch. It was quite good. The two leads, Brown Findlay and Jones, were particularly good.

Well, Turing did get a prize named after him... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_Awardnisiprius wrote:A pity the Nobel prize cannot be awarded posthumously.
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
For some reason I only watched "A Bridge Too Far" for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I thought of it again when Taylor Larimore posted his recent thread on the Battle of the Bulge, and the American General's refusal to surrender there. Although a strength of the movie is the way it manages to describe a very complex true story about an operation involving 35,000 paratroopers, a bit of me hopes that the scene where the British commander refuses to surrender is made up. The British paratroopers held out for nine days when they should have been relieved by ground troops after two, their resupply failed, and they were running out of ammunition. Moreover they were lightly armed and fighting SS tank divisions they hadn't expected to encounter. I think it was in reading Wikipedia about "Operation Market Garden" afterwards I came across passing references to bayonet charges and them fighting with knives. Knives against tanks doesn't really seem fair. If they did have an early opportunity to surrender, I wonder if it would have been better if they had taken it.
Anyway, I thoroughly recommend it, if there's anyone else who has managed to avoid it until now.
