I just finished watching Beautiful Girls on Netflix. Nice little 1996 film, with a breakout and delightful Natalie Portman performance.

Agree, beautifully and hilariously underplayed by some of the best (Guinness, Sellers, etc.). The characters of Guinness and Katie Johnson are a great comic contrast. Fun.

Captain America, the Winter Soldier. I liked it. Action? Check. Lots of car chases and crashes? Check. Special effects? Check. Choreographed fight scenes? Double check. Decent plot? Check.

Stan Lee cameo? Check. Samuel L. Jackson? Check. Robert Redford? It's been a while since I last saw him.

Watch to the end of the credits, they're setting up for a sequel.

The Last Castle. T

The interplay between the characters played by Robert Redford and James Gandolfini is masterfully acted, IMO.

To be clear, Robert Redford is a very good actor. My reference to him in Captain America was for the visual impact. I still remember him from The Natural. Perhaps it's because I love baseball and remember the movie very well.

Okay, this is a book, not a movie, but since you love baseball you might like Wait Till Next Year by the historian Doris Kearns Goodwin.

The normal heart, an HBO movie about the AIDS crisis in the early 1980s. We rented it on DVD since we don't subscribe to HBO. My husband rented it from the library.

It is a very good movie, but hit just a little too close to home for my husband who did get an AIDS diagnosis, fortunately in 2007 when good treatments were available, not in the 1980s when they weren't - and of course I have HIV as well since that's the way these things tend to go.

Watched Runaway Train (1985) with Jon Voight and Eric Roberts recently. It's about two prisoners that break out of prison in Alaska, get on a train and the only other person on it, the engineer has a fatal heart attack, so it becomes a "Runaway Train." It may sound formulaic but it's kind of an existential makes you think film. Vivladi in the score and shakespearean quotes. Highly entertaining.

On a side note.....

What's the deal with Wes Anderson? I haven't come across a single film by him that I could tolerate for more than 15 minutes.

I just saw the movie "August Rush" and loved it....I think it's from 2006-ish.

Good movies are hard to come by though....I'm not as easily impressed as I was even 10 years ago. Plus, I think TV shows have just gotten way better.

I watched What Maisie Knew on Netflix last night. It starred Julianne Moore, Steve Coogan, Onata Aprile, Joanna Vanderham, and Alexander Skarsgård.

The move is an adaption of a Henry James novel about a young girl caught in the middle of her parents' divorce. Julianne Moore and Steve Coogan play the squabbling parents. Onata Aprile plays the young girl.

Force Majeur.

Swedish Family (Couple, 2 kids) on vacation in the French Alps. During lunch at the lodge's rooftop restaurant, they see an avalanche that appears to be headed for them. The father runs, abandoning his wife and kids. But the avalanche stops before it reaches them. The rest of the movie is the fallout from the father running.

Excellent movie. Great writing, and very well acted.

Is it a movie or a miniseries or what? We're about halfway through the series, "Bosch," an Amazon Prime original. It's based on Michael Connelly's novels about a detective in the LAPD. I won't say your life isn't complete without it, but we are really enjoying it. Very well done. I think the acting is excellent, and the actor who plays Bosch really captures the way I imagined Bosch from the books. The actor's name, "Titus Welliver," seems just as unlikely to me as a detective being named "Hieronymous Bosch." The production values are very good, it looks every bit like a "real" movie or TV miniseries.

I watched it several weeks ago over several nights. I liked it. I could have done without the romantic sideshow that was never part of the arc of the books.
