I finished watching Reilly Ace of Spies last night. I had watched it when PBS first broadcast it in the early eighties and loved it, and I think it holds up very well thirty years later.

The Quick and The Dead, with Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, and Russell Crowe. BTW, Leonardo DiCaprio plays a part here.

If you've watched any of the classic westerns like The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; you want to watch this movie. Women should especially watch this; Sharon Stone is a good role model.

JW Nearly Retired wrote:We have recently watched a couple of Netflix sub-titled foreign movies. One was a 1997 German film "Comedian Harmonists". We were inspired to view this film by the recent Barry Manilow musical "Harmony" that we happened to see about the same 1920's/30's group.

Netflix recommended that as something I might like and hey, they were right. There's a tribute group now, the Berlin Comedian Hormonists, but they're not, as I first thought, the cast from the movie.

In the movie theaters I saw Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. This is a series that deserves more attention that it's been getting: the writing and acting are far better than in the original series.

The Lunchbox - and I loved it. A little slice of Indian life, complete with the trials and tribulations of the office worker.

Recommended for me by Netflix. They know me better than I know myself, apparently.

American Hustle... I liked it but as usual the profanity was overplayed and I think anachronistic.

Same with Inside Llewyn Davis, droll but too much modern style profanity.

I wish directors wouldn't let actors run with the ad libbed dialog so much.

Two weeks ago I saw "The Drop". Definitely worth seeing.

Last week, on my recommendation, my brother took me to see it with him. This time, I caught something at the end
that changed my assumptions of which direction the lives of the characters would take. It was a more sinister direction,
one that was hinted at by the police detective. That's all I can say without throwing out a spoiler.

However, if it did go in that sinister direction, I could see a sequel following-- or even a prequel.
Sometimes pessimism leaves me pretty well prepared for when things don't go my way, and pleasantly surprised when they do.

Hiachi with Richard Gere. Cute feel good movie and a tearjerker (I believe I saw that on Netflix)

About Time with Rachel McAdams (Amazon Instant Video) Great movie and another tearjerker

Transparent (Amazon Prime original series) - Good show and very original.

I highly recommend them all!

Tonight I am going to watch Chef with Jon Favreau (I have high hopes for this one) - This one is on Amazon Instant Video
Tomorrow I am going to see Gone Girl with Ben Affleck - (I am actually going to a movie theater to see this one)

5. "Jack Reacher" starring Tom Cruise , watched it 2 or 3 times, don't know why, good movie, don't like him, almost didn't watch it.
6. "The Last Stand" starring Awwwwnold
7. "Parker" starring Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez, a retelling of the Mel Gibson movie
8. "Erased" starring Aaron Eckhart
9. "Shooter" starring Mark Wahlberg

That's enough I guess. :happy I've given all these 4 or 5 stars on Netflix. Netflix' suggestions algorithm is great. I'd never have heard of some of these movies otherwise.

Quite interesting film about the history and development of the art of film editing. Features contributions from some famous directors like Spielberg and Tarantino and their editors. I really liked it and I think in the long run it will increase my appreciation of film.

I normally don't watch American films and TV shows, but on a recent cross-Atlantic flight I tried some. I was disappointed in what I saw and was confirmed in my decision to continue avoiding popular culture. I started with two episodes of "The Big Bang Theory" that was mentioned to me by two different people, one of whom (a physicist) thought that it portrayed scientists in a positive way. Perhaps, it's better in depicting scientists than typical egghead references, but I don't think it would have encouraged me to become a scientist. The most popular female character in the episodes I watched was a waitress, not a physicist.

Then I decided to watch a new release about women and chose "The Other Woman." The film was silly and unrealistic in many ways, but it kept my attention. Thus encouraged, I next selected from the classics "How to Marry a Millionaire." That was waste of time in terms of the entertainment value and depiction of millionaires.

The last movie I watched was Tous les Matins du Monde, a rental from Vudu. I found it not at all realistic or helpful in its depiction of the lives of modern musicians...

I watched Boyhood with an audience of other middle aged people. There was a lot of knowing laughter. Another very good film from this auteur but on the whole prefer the "Before" trilogy.

Re: "Grave of the Fireflies" - a truly great film yet profoundly sad. If you want anime for a Friday night I'd probably recommend "Howl's Moving Castle" and "Spirited Away" and as mentioned "My Neighbour Tortoro"

Recently, I watched the "Wolf of Wall Street" and "Her" on a long distance fight.

"Wolf" is very entertaining. I recommend it. "Her" is creative and clever- also entertaining-much slower paced than "Wolf" but it engages you.

Speaking of which, is there ever going to be a Wall Street 3 made?

Ugh... I was pleasantly surprised by the first 2/3 of this movie... I thought it was much better than I expected.... but the ending was so horrible, I couldn't possibly recommend it to anyone...

Jack calls the bad guys: "I'm coming right now to get you".

And then he drives straight into the bad guys compound without even a gun, with all the bad guys ready for him to show up... And somehow he wins, of course.

I can't accept such stupidity in movies. Strains my suspension of disbelief past the breaking point...

Another movie which might have been good was Kevin Bacon's Death Sentence... except the part where the bad guys call you, tell you they are coming for you and know where you live, and then Bacon (with hours to prepare), ends up sitting in his living room at midnight, waiting for multiple armed bad guys to show up.... and all he has is... a baseball bat.... Oh, and his wife and kid are sleeping upstairs... Takes too much thought to send them to grandma's right?

I went to a early show yesterday and saw "The Judge" I thought that over all it was a good film even if a bit hard to follow certain parts. I am a fan of Robert Duvall and thought he was out standing in his role.

I also just watched the latest Godzilla in 2-D Blu-ray. If you want a movie that's got a lot of entertaining special effects and not too deep a plot, it could be worse. It might be more entertainment watching it in 3-D, but not much more.

I was expecting more of the earlier type of Godzilla movie, so I was pleasantly surprised to see this different approach.

Another vote for Gone Girl. At 2:20 it seemed like it might drag but it held my interest throughout. I agree that Rosamund Pike was excellent although I wonder if a very well executed "who done it" like Gone Girl will garner any Oscar nominations. Doesn't seem to be the Academy's thing.

The Third Man, with Jos. Cotten, Alida Valli, and Orson Welles, directed by Carol Reed, 1949. A must-see classic!

The Man Who Would Be King, with Michael & Shakira Caine and Sean Connery, directed by John Huston, 1975.

I'm guessing you haven't read the books. He never carries a gun and he always wins. They are basically comic books in novel form. However, the real Jack Reacher is probably twice the size of Tom Cruise. I didn't watch the movie but I am guessing that Tom talks twice as much as the real Jack Reacher.
